Confused about BASIC for PFL payment - what steps does my husband need to take?
My husband started his baby bonding PFL about 2.5 weeks ago and we just got a letter from something called BASIC? The letter has instructions about logging into some website to 'manage his benefits' but I thought EDD handled all the PFL payments directly? Is BASIC part of EDD? The letter says he needs to verify employment info and set up payment preferences before they'll release funds. I'm helping him with paperwork since we have a 3-week-old and he's overwhelmed with baby care. I'm concerned because we were counting on that first payment coming through soon to cover bills. His HR department didn't mention anything about BASIC when they helped with the PFL application. Is this legit or some kind of scam?

BASIC is a third-party benefits administrator that some employers use to manage their PFL claims. It's not part of EDD but works with them - this is totally legitimate. Your husband's employer likely uses BASIC to administer their leave programs, including coordinating with EDD for state benefits. You absolutely need to follow their instructions to ensure payment. The website should ask for verification of his last day worked and may require setting up direct deposit information separate from what he provided to EDD. The sooner he completes this, the faster the payment will process!

•Thank you!!! That makes sense now. His HR person is on vacation this week so we didn't know who to ask. Will get this done right away. Do you know if this will delay his payment? The EDD account says his claim is approved but no payment issued yet.

We went through this too!! BASIC handles the admin side for some companies. Not a scam! They were actually really helpful once my husband called them. They explained exactly what we needed to do.

•That's good to hear. Did you get payments on time once you completed their process? We're stressing about the mortgage coming up.

BASIC is THE WORST!!! We had to deal with them for my leave last year and they lost my paperwork TWICE!!!! Then they blamed me for not uploading it correctly but I had screenshots proving I did. They kept my first payment delayed by over 3 weeks until I finally got someone competent on the phone. DOCUMENT EVERYTHING and follow up constantly!!!!

•This happened to my sister too! BASIC kept saying they were "missing information" but wouldn't tell her what exactly was missing. So frustrating.

Benefits administrator here - BASIC is a legitimate third-party administrator (TPA) that many companies use to manage their leave programs. Your husband's employer likely has contracted with them to coordinate leave benefits, including interfacing with EDD. Here's what's happening: 1. Your husband filed his PFL claim with EDD 2. EDD approved the claim but needs employment verification 3. BASIC manages that verification process for his employer 4. Once verified through BASIC, EDD will release payment Complete the steps in the letter ASAP. It typically takes 2-3 business days after verification for EDD to process payment.

I had the same confusion with BASIC last year! I was trying to call EDD for days to figure out what was going on with my claim because the BASIC letter seemed strange. After hours of trying, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. The agent confirmed BASIC was legitimate and working with my employer. Saved me so much time and stress! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 - might be helpful if you need to talk to EDD directly about how this all works together.

•Thanks for sharing this! If we run into any more issues I'll definitely check out that service. The EDD phone system is impossible.

Just wanted to add - make sure your husband creates his own account on the BASIC website rather than using your login info even if you're helping him. My wife tried to do everything for me and it caused verification problems later. Their system tracks the account creation details.

Wait I'm confused...isn't BASIC for disability claims not PFL? When I had my baby I got SDI first during recovery then switched to PFL for bonding. Did your husband do disability first? Maybe that's why BASIC is involved?

•BASIC can administer both SDI and PFL claims depending on the employer's arrangement. Some companies use them for all leave types, others just for certain programs. It varies by employer but is completely normal either way.

Update: We got everything sorted out! Logged into the BASIC portal and completed all the verification steps yesterday. This morning we got an email saying payment has been initiated and should arrive in 3-5 business days. Thanks everyone for the help and explaining how this works!
