EDD PFL payment schedule? Just approved but confused about certification & deposit dates
Just got approved for baby bonding PFL after transitioning from SDI (yay!) but I'm completely confused about when I'll actually start getting PAID. My approval letter mentions a benefit amount but says nothing about payment dates or if I need to certify like with unemployment. This is my first time on PFL and I'm trying to budget for bills. Does anyone know: 1. Will payments just automatically show up in my account? Weekly? Biweekly? 2. Do I need to certify somehow for each period like with unemployment? 3. Are payments on a consistent schedule or random? My EDD account is super unhelpful - just shows I'm approved with a claim balance. I'm stressing because my SDI ran out last week and I need to know when to expect money! Thanks in advance for any help.

PFL payments are issued every two weeks, automatically - no need to certify! When I did my baby bonding time last year, the first payment took about 10 days to show up after approval. After that, I got payments like clockwork every two weeks until my benefit ran out. You should get a BofA debit card in the mail if you don't already have one from your SDI claim. The money just shows up on there unless you set up direct deposit.

•Omg thank you! That's a huge relief. I do have the BofA card from my SDI. So I literally don't have to do ANYTHING and money will just appear every two weeks? That sounds way too easy for a government program lol

congrats on the bby! edd doesnt tell u but payments go out depending on the day ur claim started. its like every other monday or something weird. first one takes forver tho

•WRONG!!! PFL is NOT based on the day your claim started! It's biweekly from the date they process your first payment. If they process Monday, you'll always get paid every other Monday. If Thursday, then every other Thursday. Don't spread misinformation when people need real help!!

It can be confusing when you transition from SDI to PFL because they are managed slightly differently. Here's what you need to know about PFL payments: - Payments are issued biweekly (every two weeks) - You do NOT need to certify for PFL like you do for unemployment - The first payment typically takes 7-10 business days after approval - Subsequent payments follow a regular biweekly schedule from your first payment date - Payment is made to the same BofA debit card used for SDI unless you set up direct deposit Also, your EDD account will update with payment information once processed, usually showing as "Paid" with the amount and date. Keep an eye on your account for this status change. One important note: If you filed for 8 weeks of PFL but plan to return to work earlier, you DO need to notify EDD to stop payments - otherwise you could face an overpayment situation.

•Thank you for the detailed info! Do you know if there's a way to see my future payment dates somewhere in the EDD system? Or do I just need to count 14 days from whenever the first payment hits?

I literally spent 3 HOURS trying to call EDD last month with this EXACT question when I transitioned from pregnancy disability to baby bonding. The stupid automated system kept hanging up on me!!! Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD agent in like 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 The agent told me payments come every 2 weeks automatically, and if you had SDI first, it's usually 7-10 days after approval for the first payment. Totally worth it because I was going crazy not knowing when I'd get paid.

•is that service legit?? i'm afraid to give out my info with so many scams these days

•Yes, it's legit. I was skeptical too but they just help connect your call - they don't access your EDD account or anything. I would've wasted days trying to get through on my own. But up to you!

I went through this in January 2025 and here's my exact timeline: - PFL approved January 10 - First payment received January 18 (8 days later) - Second payment exactly 14 days later on February 1 - Third payment February 15 - Final payment March 1 No certification needed. The system is actually pretty reliable once it starts. The only thing that tripped me up was that my final payment was smaller because it was just for the remaining days on my claim. Also, if you have direct deposit set up, the funds are typically available 1-2 days faster than waiting for the BofA card to be loaded. You can set up direct deposit through your EDD online account if you haven't already.

•That's really helpful to see the actual timeline! I'll definitely set up direct deposit today. Thanks for sharing your experience!

When i had my baby in 2023 i never got my first pfl payment for like 3 weeks and i almost got evicted!!1 then i called and they said it was because my identity verification or something stupid. i hate edd so much.

•That's terrible! But it sounds like you might have had an identity verification flag on your account, which isn't typical. For most people, the payments do start automatically without issues like that. Always worth calling if it's been more than 10 business days after approval though.

The payments are biweekly but something I learned the hard way - if you're going back to work early, you HAVE to call EDD and tell them to stop the payments or you'll have to pay back any overpayment. Ask me how I know lol... had to repay almost $1200 because I went back to work 2 weeks before my PFL was supposed to end and forgot to notify them. Such a hassle!

•Oh that's a really good point, thank you! I'm planning to take the full 8 weeks, but I'll definitely remember this in case anything changes with my return-to-work date.

Brace yourself for the EDD payment schedule; it makes absolutely NO sense to normal humans. Your first payment could take anywhere from 7 days to 3 weeks depending on how the EDD gods are feeling that day. After that, it's supposedly every two weeks, but I swear they just throw darts at a calendar. I've been on PFL twice (2024 and 2025) and both times were completely different experiences. First time was smooth, second time they randomly decided I needed to verify my identity THREE WEEKS into payments and everything stopped. 🙄 Just know this: EDD operates in their own time dimension. Set up direct deposit and pray.

•While there can certainly be hiccups in the system, the vast majority of PFL claims do follow the standard biweekly payment schedule once they begin. If a claim has no issues or flags, payments are actually quite predictable. Identity verification delays typically happen at the beginning of a claim, not midway through, unless there was suspicious activity detected.

I just went through this exact transition from SDI to PFL in February 2025 and can confirm what others have said - payments are automatic and biweekly! My first payment came 9 days after approval, then every 14 days after that. The relief of not having to certify is amazing after dealing with UI certification requirements. One tip: check your EDD account online the day before you expect payment. It usually updates to show "Paid" status before the money actually hits your card/account. That helped me track the timing. Also, make sure your address is current because they'll mail you a payment schedule breakdown after your first payment processes. Congrats on the baby and enjoy your bonding time without stressing about the payments - the system actually works pretty smoothly for PFL once it gets going!

•This is so reassuring to hear from someone who just went through it! I'm definitely going to check my EDD account daily once I hit that 7-10 day mark. The tip about checking the day before expected payment is really smart - at least I'll know it's coming even if there's a delay with the actual deposit. Thanks for the encouragement about enjoying bonding time without stress!

Hey Ryan! I just went through this same transition about 6 months ago and totally understand the stress - especially when you're already dealing with a new baby! The good news is that PFL is actually WAY easier than unemployment when it comes to payments. Here's what you can expect: - First payment: 7-10 business days after approval (mine took 8 days) - After that: Every 14 days automatically, no certification needed - Payment method: Same BofA card from your SDI unless you set up direct deposit Pro tip: Log into your EDD account around day 7-8 and look for the payment status to change from "Pending" to "Paid" - that's usually your first sign money is coming. Also, if you haven't already, definitely set up direct deposit through your EDD portal. It's faster than waiting for the BofA card to load. The automatic nature of PFL payments is honestly one of the few things EDD does right. Once it starts, it's like clockwork. You've got enough to worry about with a new baby - at least this part should be stress-free! Congrats on your little one! 🍼

Hello, I submitted my pfl on 7/10/2025. I then received a letter in the mail showing me the amount I’d be getting, however, it is now 7/25/2025 and online it shows “payment authorized” for 7/24/2025 as well as under “date issued” on the activity log but I have not received a payment.

Amara Nnamani
•Hi April! If your payment shows "payment authorized" and "date issued" as 7/24, that's actually a good sign - it means EDD has processed and sent the payment. There's usually a 1-3 business day delay between when it shows "authorized/issued" and when you actually receive the funds on your BofA card or direct deposit account. Since 7/24 was yesterday, I'd expect to see the money by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. If you don't see it by Wednesday, definitely call EDD because there might be an issue with your payment method. The waiting is so stressful but it sounds like everything is moving forward normally!

Hey Ryan! I totally get the anxiety about not knowing when money will show up - especially with a new baby and bills to pay! I went through this exact same transition from SDI to PFL last year and can share what I learned: **The good news:** PFL payments are automatic - no certification required like with unemployment! Once approved, you literally don't have to do anything. **Timeline:** - First payment: Usually 7-10 business days after approval - After that: Every 14 days like clockwork - Same BofA card from your SDI will be used (or direct deposit if you set that up) **What to watch for:** Your EDD online account will update to show "Paid" status usually a day before the money actually hits your account. That's your heads up that it's coming! One thing I wish someone had told me - if for any reason you decide to go back to work earlier than planned, make sure to call EDD immediately to stop payments. Otherwise you'll have to pay back any overpayments later. The waiting for that first payment is nerve-wracking, but once it starts, PFL is actually one of the more reliable EDD programs. Hang in there and congrats on your little one! 🎉

•Thank you so much for the detailed breakdown! It's such a relief to hear from someone who went through the exact same transition. The tip about watching for the "Paid" status change is really helpful - at least I'll have a heads up when money is coming. I'm definitely going to set up direct deposit today to speed things up. And good point about calling if I go back to work early - I'll make sure to remember that. This whole thread has been so much more helpful than anything I could find on the EDD website! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.

Just wanted to add my experience from when I had my daughter in late 2024! The transition from SDI to PFL was actually seamless - my last SDI payment was on a Friday and my first PFL payment came the following Wednesday (5 business days). A few things that helped me during the waiting period: - Downloaded the BofA app so I could check my card balance instantly - Set up text alerts for deposits so I'd know immediately when money hit - Kept screenshots of my EDD account showing the approval and benefit amount for my records The automatic payments really are a blessing compared to having to certify every two weeks. Just make sure your phone number and address are current in your EDD profile because they'll send you payment notices by mail and text. You're doing great navigating all this with a new baby - the financial stress will ease up once that first payment comes through! Enjoy your bonding time! 💙

•This is such helpful advice! I never thought about setting up text alerts for the BofA card - that's brilliant and would definitely help with the anxiety of wondering when money will hit. The 5-day turnaround from SDI to PFL gives me hope that mine might be quick too since I just got approved yesterday. I'm going to download the BofA app right now and get those alerts set up. Thanks for sharing your timeline and the practical tips!

Hey Ryan! I just went through this exact same situation last month when I transitioned from SDI to PFL for my son's birth. The uncertainty about payment timing is SO stressful when you're already dealing with everything that comes with a new baby! Here's what actually happened with my payments: - Got approved on a Thursday - First PFL payment hit my BofA card the following Friday (8 business days) - Every payment after that came exactly 14 days later, no exceptions The key thing that helped my sanity was checking my EDD account online every morning starting around day 6. When the payment status changed from "Pending" to "Paid," I knew the money would be in my account within 24-48 hours. One thing I didn't realize at first - if you already have the BofA debit card from your SDI claim, they'll use the exact same card for PFL. No new card needed! And definitely set up direct deposit if you haven't already - it's usually 1-2 days faster than waiting for the card to load. The automatic nature of PFL payments is honestly amazing after dealing with UI certification requirements. Once it starts, you literally don't have to think about it again until your claim period ends. You're going to be fine! That first payment will come through soon and then you can focus on enjoying your time with your little one instead of stressing about bills. Congrats on the baby! 🍼

I'm definitely going to start checking my EDD account daily starting Monday (that'll be day 6 for me). The tip about the BofA card being the same one is helpful too - I was wondering if I'd need to wait for a new card or something. I'll get direct deposit set up today to speed things up even more. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all these details - this thread has been way more helpful than anything on the EDD website!

Just wanted to share some reassurance from someone who recently went through this! I transitioned from SDI to PFL in January 2025 and was just as confused and stressed about the payment timing. Here's what I learned: - **No certification needed** - this was the biggest relief! Unlike unemployment, PFL payments are completely automatic once approved - **First payment timing**: Mine took exactly 9 days after approval. Most people see 7-10 business days - **Payment schedule**: Every 14 days after that first payment, like clockwork - **Same payment method**: Your existing BofA card from SDI will work for PFL payments **Pro tips that helped me:** 1. Check your EDD account daily starting around day 7 - when status changes to "Paid," money usually hits within 24 hours 2. Set up direct deposit if you haven't already (it's 1-2 days faster than the BofA card) 3. Keep your address/phone current in EDD - they'll mail you a payment breakdown after the first payment The waiting for that first payment is nerve-wracking, especially with bills due and a new baby, but once it starts the system is actually pretty reliable. I never had to call EDD or deal with any issues - the payments just kept coming every two weeks until my claim ended. You're almost there! Congrats on your little one and try not to stress too much about the timing - it'll work out! 💙

•This is such a comprehensive and reassuring breakdown! As someone who's been anxiously refreshing my EDD account since getting approved yesterday, it's incredibly helpful to hear from so many people who've been through this exact transition. The consistency in everyone's timelines (7-10 days for first payment, then every 14 days) is really comforting. I'm going to follow your advice and start checking daily around day 7, and I'm definitely setting up direct deposit today. Thank you for sharing all the practical tips - this community has been a lifesaver when the official EDD resources are so vague! Can't wait to actually focus on bonding with my little one instead of worrying about when bills will get paid.

Hey Ryan! I went through this exact same situation in December 2024 when I transitioned from pregnancy disability to baby bonding PFL. The anxiety about not knowing when payments will start is so real, especially when you're budgeting with a new baby! Here's what you can expect based on my experience: - **First payment**: 8 days after approval (right in that 7-10 day window everyone mentions) - **Payment frequency**: Every 14 days automatically - no certification required! - **Payment method**: Same BofA debit card from your SDI claim The biggest relief was learning I didn't need to do anything once approved. No weekly certifications, no forms to submit - the money just appears every two weeks like magic (one of the few things EDD actually does well!). **What helped me track timing:** - Starting day 7, I checked my EDD account every morning - When the payment status changed from "Pending" to "Paid," I knew money would hit within 24-48 hours - Set up text alerts on my BofA card so I'd know immediately when deposits came through Also, definitely set up direct deposit in your EDD portal if you haven't already - it's usually 1-2 days faster than waiting for the BofA card to load. The waiting for that first payment is the worst part, but once it starts, PFL is actually super reliable. You'll be able to focus on your baby instead of stressing about bills. Hang in there - you're so close! Congrats on your little one! 🍼

•Thank you Jackie! This is exactly the kind of real-world experience I needed to hear. It's so reassuring to know that December 2024 was recent enough that the process should be the same now. The 8-day timeline gives me a realistic expectation, and I love that you mentioned setting up text alerts on the BofA card - that's such a smart way to get instant notification when money hits. I'm definitely going to set up direct deposit today to speed things up even more. It's amazing how much stress this thread has relieved just by getting actual timelines from people who've been through it recently. Can't wait to stop refreshing my EDD account obsessively and just enjoy bonding time with my baby! Thanks for taking the time to share all the details! 🙏

Hey Ryan! I literally JUST went through this exact same transition in February 2025 - from pregnancy SDI to baby bonding PFL - and I was just as confused and stressed about the payment timing! Here's what actually happened with mine: - Approved on a Tuesday - First PFL payment hit my account 9 days later (the following Thursday) - After that, payments came every 14 days exactly - no delays, no issues The BEST part about PFL vs unemployment is that you don't have to certify for anything! Once you're approved, payments are completely automatic until your claim period ends. A few things that really helped me during the waiting period: - Set up direct deposit through your EDD portal (saves 1-2 days vs waiting for BofA card) - Check your EDD account daily starting around day 7 - when it changes from "Pending" to "Paid" you know money is coming within 24-48 hours - Download the BofA app and set up deposit notifications so you know the second money hits I know the waiting is stressful when bills are due and you have a new baby, but the system actually works really well for PFL once it gets going. You're in the home stretch - that first payment should hit any day now! Congrats on your little one and try to enjoy your bonding time without stressing too much about the payments. You've got this! 💙

•Isabella, this is SO helpful! I'm on day 3 since approval so I have a few more days to wait, but knowing someone who literally just went through this exact transition in February makes me feel so much better. The 9-day timeline is right in line with what everyone else is saying. I'm definitely going to set up direct deposit today and start checking my EDD account religiously starting Monday. The tip about the BofA app notifications is brilliant too - anything to reduce the anxiety of wondering when money will actually show up! It's such a relief to know the payments are truly automatic after that first one. Thank you for sharing your recent experience and for the encouragement - this whole thread has been more helpful than anything I could find on the EDD website! 🙏

Hey Ryan! I just went through this same transition from SDI to PFL in March 2025 and totally understand the stress - especially when you're already dealing with sleepless nights and a new baby! Here's what you can expect: - **First payment**: Usually 7-10 business days after approval (mine took 8 days) - **After that**: Automatic payments every 14 days - no certification needed! - **Payment method**: Same BofA debit card from your SDI unless you set up direct deposit The automatic nature of PFL is honestly such a blessing after dealing with other EDD programs. Once approved, you literally don't have to do anything - the money just shows up every two weeks like clockwork. **Pro tips that saved my sanity:** 1. Set up direct deposit in your EDD portal (1-2 days faster than BofA card) 2. Starting around day 6-7, check your EDD account daily for status changes 3. When it switches from "Pending" to "Paid," expect money within 24-48 hours I know the waiting is nerve-wracking when bills are due, but hang in there - you're almost at that first payment! Once it starts, you can focus on enjoying bonding time instead of stressing about money. The system actually works pretty reliably for PFL. Congrats on your little one! You've got this! 🍼

Just want to add my recent experience to help ease your anxiety! I transitioned from SDI to PFL in January 2025 and was in the exact same boat - constantly refreshing my EDD account and stressing about when that first payment would hit. Here's my timeline: - Approved: January 15th (Wednesday) - First payment: January 25th (Saturday) - exactly 10 days later - Subsequent payments: Every 14 days like clockwork The waiting for that first payment was brutal, especially with a newborn and bills piling up. But once it started, PFL was honestly the smoothest EDD experience I've ever had. No certifications, no weekly check-ins - just automatic deposits every two weeks. **What helped me survive the waiting period:** - Set up direct deposit immediately (shaved off 1-2 days) - Checked EDD account daily starting day 7 for status changes - Set up BofA mobile alerts so I'd know the instant money hit One thing that really helped my peace of mind was realizing that "7-10 business days" doesn't include weekends. So if you got approved on a weekday, start counting business days only. You're so close to that first payment! Once it hits, you can actually focus on bonding with your baby instead of stressing about finances. The system really does work for PFL - hang in there! 🍼✨

•Lindsey, thank you so much for sharing your January timeline! The 10-day example is really helpful - it shows that even at the longer end of the range, it's still very manageable. I love that you pointed out the business days vs calendar days distinction - I hadn't thought about that but it makes total sense. I got approved on a Thursday, so I'm going to count business days only and not stress if it takes until the following week. Your tips about direct deposit and mobile alerts are spot on - I've already set both up today thanks to everyone's advice in this thread. It's such a relief to hear from so many people who've been through this recently and had smooth experiences once that first payment started. Can't wait to stop obsessing over my EDD account and just enjoy my baby! Thanks for the encouragement! 🙏
