EDD PFL deposit frequency - weekly or biweekly payments?
Hi all! I just got approved for PFL baby bonding after having my daughter 3 weeks ago (yay!). The EDD website says my claim is approved and shows my weekly benefit amount ($1,422), but I'm confused about when I'll actually receive the money. Do they deposit funds weekly? Biweekly? On specific days? Just trying to budget and figure out when I can expect payments to hit my account. This is my first time on any kind of leave so totally new to how this works! Thanks in advance for your help.

•Thank you! So it sounds like biweekly is the norm then? That helps me plan.

The EDD issues PFL payments every two weeks after you complete your certification. The payments aren't on a set calendar day but rather follow a pattern based on when you submit your certification. If you're using the EDD debit card, funds are typically available by midnight on the day they process the payment. Direct deposit to your bank account might take 1-2 additional business days. You should be able to see your next certification date in your online account. The payment usually processes within 2-3 days after certification if there are no issues with your claim.

•This is really helpful, thank you! I opted for the EDD debit card since I heard it's faster. I'll check my online account for the certification date.

Wait you got a weekly benefit of $1,422??? Mine was only like $800 when I was on leave last year!! How did you get so much? Did they change the max benefit amount??

•Yes, the maximum weekly benefit amount increases annually. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit for PFL is $1,620, up from $1,429 in 2024. Your benefit amount is calculated based on your highest quarter of earnings in your base period (roughly 5-18 months before your claim begins), so higher prior earnings result in higher benefits, up to the maximum.

I had the WORST experience with PFL payments last year. They were supposed to be biweekly but sometimes would take 3+ weeks with no explanation! I ended up having to call EDD multiple times when payments were late. Took me HOURS of being on hold each time just to find out there was a "processing delay" or some other vague excuse. So frustrating when you're trying to care for a newborn AND fight with EDD about where your money is. Just be prepared that the biweekly schedule isn't always reliable. Make sure you certify on time and keep documentation of EVERYTHING.

•Ugh same thing happened to me! One time they just skipped my payment with no explanation and I had to call like 15 times before I got through to a real person.

The biweekly thing is correct, but just fyi the first payment sometimes takes a little longer to process! Mine took almost 3 weeks after approval to actually hit my account, but then the rest came regularly every 2 weeks. Also make sure you're certifying on time or they won't send the money!

•Thank you for the heads up about the first payment possibly taking longer! I'll keep that in mind and make sure not to panic if it doesn't show up right away. And I'll definitely stay on top of certifications.

does anyone know if the payment schedule for baby bonding PFL is different than the disability part? i'm still on disability after my c-section but will be transitioning to PFL soon and wondering if the payment schedule changes

•Great question! The payment schedule is actually the same for both SDI (disability) and PFL (baby bonding). Both are paid biweekly after certification. When you transition from SDI to PFL, there might be a slight delay of a few days as they process your new claim type, but the biweekly schedule remains consistent. Just make sure you've filed your PFL claim before your disability ends to avoid any gaps in payment.

i think it depends on if you have direct deposit or the edd debit card too. my sister got her money like 2 days faster with the debit card than i did with direct deposit to my bank

•That's good to know! I chose the debit card option so hopefully that means I'll get the funds a bit faster.

One thing no one mentioned - if a holiday falls during the processing time, expect delays! Happened to me with Memorial Day and I was freaking out when my payment was 3 days late. EDD doesnt process anything on holidays or weekends.

•Thanks for the heads up about holidays! That's a really good point I hadn't thought about.

To summarize what everyone has said: 1. PFL payments occur biweekly after certification 2. First payment may take a bit longer (up to 3 weeks after approval) 3. EDD debit card receives funds slightly faster than direct deposit 4. Holidays and weekends can delay payment processing 5. Payment issues do sometimes occur, requiring you to contact EDD I recommend setting up account alerts in your online EDD account so you'll get an email when payments are processed. This helps you track exactly when to expect funds.

•Thank you for this great summary! I didn't realize I could set up alerts - I'll do that right away. Really appreciate everyone's help with my question!

Just wanted to add that you should also download the EDD mobile app if you haven't already! It makes it super easy to check your payment status and certify for benefits right from your phone. Really helpful when you're dealing with a newborn and don't always have time to sit at a computer. Plus you can set up push notifications so you'll know immediately when there are updates to your claim. Congrats on your little one!

•That's a great tip about the mobile app! I had no idea EDD had one. I'll definitely download it - you're right that it'll be much easier to manage everything from my phone while taking care of the baby. Thanks for the suggestion and the congratulations!

Congrats on your little one! I'm actually in a similar boat - just had my son 5 weeks ago and I'm on PFL right now. Everyone's advice here is spot on about the biweekly payments. One thing I'd add is to make sure you understand exactly when your certification periods are. Mine are every two weeks on Sundays, and I learned the hard way that if you miss your certification deadline, your payment gets delayed until the next cycle. Also, keep your phone handy when you're expecting payments because sometimes EDD will text you about payment status updates. The waiting can be nerve-wracking when you're budgeting for a new baby, but once you get into the rhythm it becomes pretty predictable!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who's currently going through the same thing. I'll definitely pay close attention to those certification deadlines - that's such an important detail that could easily be missed. And good to know about the text updates too! It sounds like once you get the hang of the system it becomes more manageable. How are you finding the whole PFL experience overall? Is the benefit amount helping cover your expenses during leave?
