Notice of Computation from EDD SDI - Is this an approval or something else?
I just received something in the mail called a 'Notice of Computation' from EDD for my disability claim. It shows a weekly benefit amount calculation, but I'm confused if this means my claim is actually approved? It doesn't clearly say 'approved' anywhere on it. I filed about 2 weeks ago after my back surgery and I'm anxious about getting payments started. Has anyone gotten this notice before? Does this mean I'm approved and will start getting paid or is this just one step in the process? I'm getting really worried about bills piling up.

The Notice of Computation is NOT the same as an approval. It basically just tells you how much you would receive weekly IF your claim gets approved. It's calculated based on your previous wages. You should receive a separate Notice of Determination that will clearly state if your claim is approved or denied. That said, they typically don't send the Notice of Computation unless they're processing your claim positively, so it's a good sign, but not a guarantee yet.

•Oh man, that's stressful. Do you know how long after the Computation notice that I should expect the actual approval? I was hoping to get my first payment next week.

The Notice of Computation is actually a good sign! It means they've processed your wage information and calculated your benefit amount. While it's not the official approval, in my experience working with multiple disability claims, this almost always means your claim is on track for approval. The official approval comes with the Notice of Determination, but the computation notice typically comes just before approval. Check your EDD SDI Online account daily - it often updates there before mail arrives. You should see your claim status and payment info there once it's processed.

•WRONG!! I got a computation notice then got DENIED two weeks later. Don't give false hope!!! The computation is just their math - has NOTHING to do with if they approve you!!! My doctor didn't fill out the form right and they denied me even though I got the computation notice first. The EDD system is BROKEN.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation. I'm still nervous but at least it sounds like I'm on the right track. My doctor confirmed he submitted everything they asked for, so hopefully that means I won't have any issues.

I remember when my sister had her baby and was on disability. She got confused by all these notices too! I think she got money pretty quick after that computation thing. But pregnancy disability might be different than your back surgery stuff? Not sure lol. Good luck!

When I was waiting for my SDI claim to process after my car accident, I was also stressing about all these different notices. I couldn't get through to EDD on the phone for days - constant busy signals and disconnections. I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep confirmed for me that the Notice of Computation means they're finalizing my claim and explained exactly when I could expect payment. Saved me so much stress not having to keep guessing. Worth checking out if you can't get through to EDD yourself.

•Wow, I didn't know something like that existed. I've been calling for days with no luck. I'll check out that link - at this point I just need to talk to someone who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

One more thing to know - if this is your first disability payment, remember there's a 7-day waiting period before benefits begin. So your first payment won't include that first week after your disability started. This trips up a lot of first-time claimants who expect payment from day one.

•Yes, my doctor explained that to me when he filled out the paperwork. Thanks for the reminder though! My disability started May 12th, so I'm expecting payment to begin for May 19th onward. I'm just hoping it comes soon because I've already been without income for almost 3 weeks now.

Just checked with a colleague who processes EDD claims - the current timeline for most SDI claims that don't have any issues is about 14-17 days from filing to first payment. So if you're at the 2-week mark and already received the Notice of Computation, you're right on schedule. The payment is likely being processed now.

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago after my knee surgery. The Notice of Computation definitely had me confused too - it felt like getting half the information I needed! In my case, I got the computation notice on a Tuesday, then got the actual approval notice (Notice of Determination) that Friday, and my first payment hit my EDD debit card the following Tuesday. So about a week total from computation to money in hand. The computation notice really is just them showing their math, but like others said, it's usually a positive sign that they're moving forward with processing your claim. Hang in there - I know the financial stress is real when you're out of work and recovering!

I'm going through something similar right now! Filed my SDI claim about 10 days ago after a work injury and haven't heard anything yet. Reading through all these responses is actually really helpful - I had no idea there were different types of notices or about the 7-day waiting period. It sounds like you're probably in good shape if you already got the computation notice after just 2 weeks. I'm definitely going to check out that Claimyr service someone mentioned because I've been trying to call EDD for days with no luck. Hope you get your approval notice soon and can stop stressing about the bills!

•Hey, I'm new to this whole process too and this thread has been super helpful! I just filed my SDI claim last week after a minor surgery and had no idea what to expect. It's reassuring to hear from people who've actually been through this. The waiting and not knowing is definitely the worst part, especially when you're already stressed about recovery. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps us newcomers understand what's normal vs what to worry about. Hope both you and Ravi get your approvals soon!

I'm also new to this whole SDI process and this thread has been incredibly helpful! I just submitted my claim last week after a workplace injury and had no idea what all these different notices meant. It's such a relief to hear from people who've actually been through this and can explain what to expect. The waiting period is definitely nerve-wracking, especially when you're already dealing with medical bills and recovery. From what I'm reading here, it sounds like the Notice of Computation is actually a positive step in the process, even though it's confusing that it doesn't clearly state approval. Thanks to everyone who's shared their experiences - it really helps those of us who are going through this for the first time understand what's normal versus what to worry about!

•Welcome to the community! I'm also pretty new to navigating the SDI system and this thread has been a lifesaver. It's amazing how much clearer everything becomes when you hear from people who've actually walked through the process. The whole thing is so confusing when you're dealing with it for the first time - between all the different notice types, waiting periods, and trying to figure out if you're on track or not. I really appreciate how supportive everyone has been here in sharing their real experiences. It definitely makes the waiting feel less scary when you know what's typical. Hope your claim goes smoothly and you get the support you need during your recovery!

I'm in a very similar situation! Just filed my SDI claim two weeks ago after my shoulder surgery and I'm also anxiously waiting to hear back. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been so reassuring - I had no idea about the different types of notices or that the Notice of Computation was actually a positive sign in the process. The financial stress while waiting is real, especially when you're already dealing with medical expenses and recovery. It sounds like you're probably on the right track if you already received the computation notice. I haven't gotten anything in the mail yet but I'm going to start checking my online account daily like others suggested. Wishing you a quick approval and hoping we both get some good news soon!

•Welcome to the group! I just joined this community recently too and everyone here has been so helpful. It's crazy how stressful this whole process is when you're already dealing with recovery from surgery. Two weeks for SDI sounds pretty standard from what I'm reading here - I'm about 10 days into my claim process after a minor procedure and haven't heard anything yet, so you're probably ahead of me! The fact that you got the Notice of Computation seems like a really good sign based on what the experienced members are saying. I'm definitely going to start checking my online account more frequently like people suggested. Hope you get your official approval soon and can focus on healing instead of worrying about bills!

I'm also new to this community and the SDI process! Just filed my claim 6 days ago after an ankle surgery and stumbled across this thread while googling what to expect. This has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea about all these different notice types or timelines! The whole EDD system seems so confusing when you're going through it for the first time. Based on everyone's experiences here, it really does sound like getting the Notice of Computation after 2 weeks is a positive sign, even though I can totally understand why it would be confusing without explicitly saying "approved." I'm also new to this community and just went through the SDI process myself about 3 months ago after a workplace injury. This thread is bringing back all the stress and confusion I felt while waiting! The Notice of Computation was definitely confusing for me too - it felt like getting half the information I needed. In my case, I got the computation notice about 12 days after filing, then got my actual approval (Notice of Determination) about 4 days later, and first payment hit my EDD card 3 days after that. So total timeline was about 19 days from filing to money in hand. The computation notice really is just their way of showing you the math, but from my experience and what I've seen from others, they usually don't bother calculating your benefit amount unless they're planning to approve you. Keep checking your online account daily - that's where I first saw my claim status change to "paid" before any mail arrived. Hang in there, the financial stress while waiting is brutal but you're probably much closer to approval than you think!

•Thank you so much for sharing your timeline - that's exactly what I needed to hear! 19 days total sounds very reasonable and gives me a realistic expectation. I'm at day 14 now with the computation notice in hand, so if your experience is typical, I might only have to wait another week or so. I really appreciate you mentioning that they probably don't calculate benefits unless they're planning to approve - that makes me feel much more optimistic. I've been checking my online account twice a day now and will definitely watch for that status change you mentioned. It's so helpful to hear from someone who went through this recently and can give actual timelines instead of just guessing. The financial stress is definitely getting to me, but knowing there's light at the end of the tunnel helps a lot!
