SDI Notice of Computation confusion - what to look for?

Hey everyone, I just got my Notice of Computation for my disability insurance claim. I'm a bit confused about what it all means. Has anyone else dealt with this before? What should I be looking for on this notice?

The Notice of Computation is super important! It breaks down how much you'll be getting for your disability benefits. Make sure to check these key things: • Your weekly benefit amount • The maximum benefit amount for your claim • The base period they used to calculate your benefits • Any deductions or adjustments If anything looks off, call them ASAP to get it sorted out. Better to fix it now than deal with headaches later!

This is really helpful, thanks! Do you know how long it usually takes to start receiving benefits after getting this notice?

It can vary, but typically you should start seeing payments within 2-3 weeks after they approve your claim. If it's been longer, def give them a call!

ugh calling them is the WORST. i've been on hold for hours before 🤮

Tell me about it! 🙄 I actually found a way around that. There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials through the menu, waits on hold, and then calls you when a real person picks up. Costs like $20 but saved me hours of frustration. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

sounds to good to be true. has anyone else tried this?

I get the skepticism, but it really worked for me. Saved me from going crazy listening to that hold music lol. Worth every penny imho

i got mine last week and im still confused af. why do they make everything so complicated?? 🤔

Make sure you double-check all the numbers! They messed up my base period calculation and I almost got shortchanged. Don't be afraid to challenge it if something seems off.

Oh wow, thanks for the heads up! How did you go about challenging it?

I had to call them (ugh) and explain the discrepancy. Took forever to get through, but they eventually fixed it. Keep all your pay stubs handy!

Anyone else notice that the SDI benefits seem lower this year? I swear I got more last time I was on disability...

0 coins

Yeah, I think they adjusted the formula or smthing. Doesn't go as far with inflation these days anyway 😒

0 coins

its because of all the fraud last year. they had to tighten things up

Pro tip: If you need to talk to someone about your Notice of Computation, try calling right when they open. I usually have better luck getting through early in the morning!

This! Also, avoid calling on Mondays or right after a holiday. Those days are usually swamped.

Is anyone else having trouble with the online portal? I can't seem to access my claim info there, keeps giving me an error. 😤

omg yes! thought it was just me. been trying for days now

Same here. Typical government website, always broken when you need it most 🙄

Quick question - does the Notice of Computation show how long you're approved for? Or is that on a different form?

0 coins

That should be on your Notice of Determination, which is a separate form. The Computation just shows the $$

Ah gotcha, thanks! Guess I'll be waiting for another piece of mail then 📬

FYI for everyone - I heard they're changing some of the SDI rules next year. Might want to keep an eye out for announcements if you think you'll need to file again in the future.

Has anyone successfully appealed their Notice of Computation? I think they used the wrong quarters for my base period and it's really affecting my benefit amount.

0 coins

I did! It took a while, but I got it sorted. You need to file a written appeal within 30 days of receiving the notice. Be super detailed and include copies of all your evidence.

Thanks for the info! Did you use a lawyer or handle it yourself?

0 coins

I did it myself, but ngl it was a pain. If you can afford a lawyer, might be worth it for the peace of mind.

Just a heads up - if you're also getting any other benefits (like workers comp), make sure to report that. It can affect your SDI amount and you don't want to deal with overpayment issues later!

Thanks for starting this thread! I'm in the same boat - just got my Notice of Computation yesterday and it's like reading a foreign language. The amount they calculated seems way different from what I was expecting based on my previous earnings. From what I can tell, they're using some quarters from way back when I was making less money instead of my recent higher-paying job. Is that normal? I thought they'd use the most recent quarters where I was earning more. Really hoping someone here can shed some light on how they actually pick which quarters to use for the calculation! 🤞

Welcome to the confusion club! 😅 From what I understand, they don't always use your most recent quarters - they use what's called your "base period" which is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed your claim. So if you just started a higher-paying job recently, those quarters might not be included yet. It's super frustrating when you know you were earning more! You might want to double-check the dates on your notice to see exactly which quarters they used.

@Amina Diallo That s'exactly what happened to me! They used quarters from when I was working part-time instead of my recent full-time salary. It s'so backwards! I called and they explained that they have to use completed "quarters," so if you filed mid-quarter, that quarter doesn t'count. Super annoying when you re'making good money but it doesn t'help your benefits. The system really needs an update imo 🙄
