Washington ESD approved my unemployment claim - what happens next?
Just got the approval notice from Washington ESD yesterday after waiting 2 weeks in adjudication! My claim got approved for $487/week which is great news but now I'm confused about what I need to do next. Do I automatically start getting payments or do I need to file something else? The approval letter mentioned weekly claims but didn't explain much. Also worried about the job search requirements - how many jobs do I need to apply for each week? This is my first time on unemployment so I want to make sure I don't mess anything up.

Congrats on getting approved! You'll need to file your weekly claims every week to keep receiving benefits. Log into your Washington ESD account and look for the weekly claim filing option. You should be able to file for the first week starting Sunday.

•Thanks! Do I file the weekly claim on Sunday or can I do it any day during the week?

•You can file starting Sunday but you have until the following Saturday to submit it. Most people do it Sunday morning to get it out of the way.

Make sure you understand the job search requirements before you file your first weekly claim. Right now in Washington you need to complete 3 job search activities per week. Keep detailed records of everything you do - applications, networking, job fairs, etc.

•What counts as a job search activity? Does just browsing job boards count or do I need to actually apply?

Zainab Abdulrahman
•You need to actually apply or make contact. Just browsing doesn't count. Applications, contacting employers directly, attending job fairs, networking events - those all count.

•Also register with WorkSourceWA if you haven't already. Some of their workshops and career counseling sessions count toward your job search requirements.

The approval letter should have your benefit year dates and your weekly benefit amount. Make sure you understand when your benefits expire - usually it's 52 weeks from when you first filed but check your specific dates.

•Mine says benefit year ends in December 2025. Does that mean I can collect for the full year even if I find a job sooner?

•If you find a job you need to report it immediately. You can't collect unemployment while working full time. Part time work is different - you can still collect partial benefits if you work less than full time.

I had such a hard time reaching Washington ESD when I had questions after getting approved. Spent hours on hold and got disconnected multiple times. Finally found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Really saved me a lot of frustration.

Ava Martinez
•How does that work? Do they just call for you or something?

QuantumQuasar
•Yeah they handle the calling and waiting on hold, then connect you when they get an agent. Way better than sitting there for hours getting busy signals.

•Never heard of that but sounds useful. I've been trying to reach Washington ESD for weeks about my job search log.

don't forget about taxes! unemployment benefits are taxable income. you can have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay estimated taxes quarterly. i learned this the hard way last year.

Ava Martinez
•Oh no I didn't think about taxes! How do I set up the withholding?
0 coins
Paolo Moretti
•log into your account and look for tax withholding options. i think you can choose 10% federal withholding.

Miguel Castro
•Yeah definitely set up withholding unless you want a big tax bill next year. I always do 10% federal and save some extra for state taxes.

Congratulations! The first payment usually takes a few extra days to process but after that it's pretty regular. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time every week - if you miss one you might have to call to get it reopened.

Ava Martinez
•How long does the first payment usually take? I'm already behind on some bills.

Amina Diop
•For me it was about 5-7 business days for the first payment after I filed my first weekly claim. After that it was pretty consistent, usually 2-3 days.

Make sure you read through the handbook they should have sent you. It explains all the rules about reporting work, job search requirements, and what can cause you to lose benefits. Knowledge is power when dealing with Washington ESD!

•I think I got some paperwork but I'll look for a handbook. Is it available online too?

Connor Byrne
•Yes it's on the Washington ESD website. Search for 'unemployment handbook' or 'claimant handbook' and you should find it.

Been collecting for 3 months now and the main thing is just staying on top of your weekly claims and job search activities. Set up a routine and stick to it. I file my weekly claim every Sunday morning and do my job searching Monday-Wednesday.

Ava Martinez
•That's a good system. Do you keep a spreadsheet or something to track your job search activities?
0 coins
Oliver Weber
•Yeah I have a simple spreadsheet with company name, position, date applied, and how I applied. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities so keep good records.

Zainab Abdulrahman
•I use a notebook but spreadsheet is probably better. Just make sure you can prove you actually did the job search activities if they ask.

One thing that tripped me up - if you do any freelance work or odd jobs while collecting, you have to report ALL income even if it's just $20. They'll adjust your benefits accordingly but not reporting it can get you in trouble for overpayment.

Ava Martinez
•What if I sell some stuff on eBay or Facebook Marketplace? Does that count as income?
0 coins
Natasha Romanova
•If you're selling personal items for less than you paid, probably not. But if you're buying and reselling for profit, that's income. When in doubt, report it.

The Washington ESD system can be confusing but once you get into a routine it's not too bad. Just remember that if you have questions, it's better to ask than to guess. Mistakes can cause overpayments or disqualifications.

•Good point. Better safe than sorry when it comes to unemployment rules.

•Exactly why I ended up using Claimyr when I had questions. Sometimes you really need to talk to a human at Washington ESD and the phone system is brutal.

Make sure you have direct deposit set up! Getting paper checks takes forever and they can get lost in the mail. Electronic deposits are much faster and more reliable.

Ava Martinez
•I think I set that up when I first applied but I'll double check. Thanks for the reminder!

•Yeah definitely verify it's set up correctly. I've heard of people waiting weeks for checks because their bank info was wrong.

Enjoy the approval high while it lasts lol. Now comes the real work of actually finding a job while navigating all these rules and requirements. Good luck!

•Haha thanks! At least I have some income while I'm looking. Makes the job search less stressful.

•Exactly! That's what unemployment is for. Take your time to find the right job, not just any job.

Just remember that unemployment benefits are temporary. Use this time wisely to really focus on your job search and maybe improve your skills through online courses or certifications.

Ava Martinez
•Good advice. I was thinking about taking some online courses while I'm looking for work.
0 coins
Malik Thomas
•Do it! Many online courses count toward your job search requirements too, so it's a win-win.

Welcome to the unemployment club nobody wants to be in! Seriously though, you'll figure it out. The first few weeks are the hardest while you're learning the system.

Pro tip: if you're not sure about something when filing your weekly claim, there's usually a help link or phone number you can call. Don't just guess on the answers because wrong information can cause problems later.

Ava Martinez
•Good to know! I'll definitely ask if I'm unsure about anything.

•Yeah, the Washington ESD phone system sucks but it's better than dealing with an overpayment or disqualification later.

Congrats on the approval! Now the real adventure begins. Filing weekly claims becomes second nature pretty quickly. Just don't forget to do it every week - I almost missed one when I was out of town.

Ava Martinez
•Can you file the weekly claim from your phone or do you need a computer?

Freya Larsen
•I always do it on my phone. The mobile site works fine for weekly claims, though some other stuff is easier on a computer.

Make sure you understand what happens if you turn down a job offer. Washington ESD has rules about 'suitable work' and refusing suitable work can disqualify you from benefits.
0 coins
Ava Martinez
•What makes a job 'suitable'? Is it just about the pay rate?
0 coins
GalacticGladiator
•It's based on your skills, experience, and local wage standards. Generally you can't refuse a job that pays at least 80% of your previous wage after the first few weeks.

Zainab Abdulrahman
•The rules get more strict the longer you're on unemployment. What might not be suitable work in week 1 could be considered suitable work in week 10.

One last thing - keep all your unemployment paperwork organized! You might need it for taxes, or if Washington ESD has questions about your claim later. I keep everything in a folder on my computer and print important stuff.

Ava Martinez
•Good idea! I'll start keeping better records of everything unemployment related.
