Washington ESD weekly claims - is unemployment weekly biweekly filing schedule?
I just got approved for unemployment benefits after a month of adjudication and I'm confused about the claiming schedule. Do I need to file weekly claims every week or is it biweekly? The Washington ESD website mentions both and I don't want to mess up my payments. My first payment is supposed to come next week but I want to make sure I'm filing correctly. Has anyone else been confused by this?

Washington ESD requires weekly claim filing. You file every week for the previous week, not biweekly. Each Sunday you can file for the week that just ended (Sunday through Saturday). Don't skip weeks or you won't get paid for those weeks.

•Thanks! So I file every Sunday for the previous week? That makes sense now.

•yeah but you can file starting sunday morning, you dont have to wait until the end of the day

The confusion comes from the payment schedule - Washington ESD pays biweekly but you still have to file weekly claims. So you file week 1, then file week 2, then get paid for both weeks together. That's probably why you're seeing both mentioned.

•Oh that explains it! So I file weekly but get paid every two weeks. Got it.

•Wait, I thought they paid weekly? I've been getting payments every week since I started claiming in November.

•It depends on when you file and when your claim started. Some people get weekly payments, others biweekly. But everyone files weekly regardless of payment schedule.

I had the same confusion when I started! The key thing is to file every single week even if you don't get paid every week. I missed filing one week thinking I could catch up later and lost that week's benefits completely. Washington ESD doesn't let you backdate missed weeks unless you have a really good reason.

•Yikes, good to know. I'll make sure to file every week without fail.

•This happened to my cousin too. She thought she could file every other week and lost like $800 in benefits.

If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD about questions like this, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a system that calls for you and gets you connected. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•That sounds really helpful. I've been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks about other questions and can never get through.

•Is that legit? Sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•Yeah it's legit, I used it twice. They focus on value rather than being cheap - worth it when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim.

Just to be crystal clear - Washington ESD weekly claims are filed every week, usually on Sunday for the previous week (Sunday-Saturday). The system opens Sunday morning and you have until the following Saturday to file that week's claim. Don't wait until the last minute though.

•Perfect, that's exactly what I needed to know. Filing this Sunday!

•I always file Sunday morning right when I wake up so I don't forget. Set a phone reminder.

•Right? I spent an hour on their website trying to figure out the same thing when I first started claiming.

•At least once you get the hang of it, filing weekly claims only takes like 2 minutes each week.

Make sure you're also keeping track of your job search activities if you're required to do them. Washington ESD requires 3 job search activities per week for most claimants, and you need to log them when you file your weekly claim.

Fatima Al-Mansour
•Yes I saw that requirement. Do I need to submit proof of the job searches every week?

Oliver Weber
•No, you just need to keep records in case they audit you. But you do need to report the activities when filing your weekly claim.

•I got audited last year and had to provide all my job search documentation. Keep good records!

Another thing to watch out for - if you work any hours during a week, even just a few, you need to report it on your weekly claim. Washington ESD will reduce your benefits but you might still get partial unemployment.

•Good point. I might pick up some freelance work so I'll need to report those hours.

•Yeah don't try to hide any work. They cross-reference with employment records and you'll get an overpayment notice if they catch unreported income.

I've been filing weekly claims for 6 months now and it becomes routine. Just remember: file every week, report any work or income, log your job searches, and answer all the questions honestly. Washington ESD's system works fine once you understand the weekly schedule.

One more tip - if you ever have issues with filing your weekly claim online, you can call the automated system. But honestly, I'd recommend using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier if you need to talk to a real person about claim issues. The regular phone lines are impossible to get through.

•Yeah I'm definitely going to look into Claimyr. Seems like it could save a lot of frustration.

•The automated system works ok for basic weekly claims but if you have any complicated issues you really need to talk to an agent.

Just want to confirm what others said - Washington ESD is definitely weekly filing, not biweekly. I think some people get confused because unemployment benefits in some other states are biweekly, but Washington is weekly all the way.

•That makes sense. I probably saw information about other states and got confused.

•Yeah each state does it differently. Washington ESD keeps it simple with weekly filing every Sunday.

WEEKLY!!! Not biweekly!!! File every Sunday!!! How hard is this to understand people keep asking the same question over and over

•Chill out, it's a reasonable question when you're new to the system.

•Sorry, I'm just trying to make sure I don't mess up my benefits. Thanks for confirming it's weekly though.

For what it's worth, I used Claimyr twice when I had adjudication issues and they got me through to Washington ESD agents both times. Really worth it when you're stuck and need actual help with your claim rather than just filing weekly claims.

•Good to know! I'll definitely keep that in mind if I run into any issues with my claim.

•How quickly did they get you connected? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for 2 weeks about an overpayment notice.

•Usually within an hour or two. Way better than spending all day redialing the regular number.

Pro tip: set up direct deposit if you haven't already. Makes getting your unemployment payments much faster than waiting for a check in the mail. You can set it up through your Washington ESD account online.

Wait I thought you could file your weekly claim any day of the week? I usually file mine on Wednesdays because that's when I remember. Am I doing something wrong?

Luca Ferrari
•You can file any day during the week, but most people file on Sunday because that's when the new week opens. As long as you file by Saturday you're fine.
0 coins
Fatima Al-Mansour
•Yeah I think the key is just filing every week, doesn't matter exactly which day.

Summary for anyone still confused: Washington ESD unemployment claims are filed WEEKLY (every week), usually on Sunday for the previous week. Payments might be weekly or biweekly depending on your situation, but you always file weekly regardless. Don't skip weeks or you lose those benefits.
