Washington ESD unemployment weekly or monthly filing - confused about schedule
I just got approved for unemployment benefits and I'm really confused about the filing schedule. Do I need to file weekly or monthly with Washington ESD? I've been getting mixed information online and want to make sure I don't mess this up. Some sites mention weekly claims but others talk about monthly reporting. What's the actual requirement for Washington state unemployment?

It's weekly claims in Washington state. You have to file every week to certify that you're still unemployed and looking for work. The weekly claim period runs Sunday through Saturday.

•Thank you! That makes sense. So I need to do this every single week?

Aisha Abdullah
•Yes, every week without fail. If you miss a week you can lose your benefits for that period.

Weekly claims are required every Sunday through Saturday. You report your job search activities, any work performed, and any income earned during that week. The system opens for filing usually Sunday morning and you have until the following Saturday to submit your weekly claim.

•What happens if I forget to file one week?

•You'll lose payment for that week. Washington ESD doesn't allow backdating of missed weekly claims in most cases. You can continue filing the following week but that missed week is typically lost.

•That's brutal but true. I missed one week last year and never got paid for it even though I called to explain.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to clarify this or other questions, I recently discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which helped me reach an actual ESD agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting busy signals.

•Is that legitimate? I'm always nervous about third-party services with government stuff.

Carmen Diaz
•Yeah it's legit. They don't handle your claim or anything, just help you get through to an actual ESD representative on the phone. I was skeptical too but it worked.

WEEKLY!! This is so important - I can't stress this enough. I know someone who thought it was monthly and didn't file for 3 weeks. Lost all that money and couldn't get it back. Washington ESD is very strict about this.

•Oh wow that's terrible. I definitely don't want that to happen to me.

•Same thing happened to my neighbor. She assumed it was like other government benefits that are monthly. Big mistake.

Just to be completely clear - you file weekly claims but you get paid bi-weekly. So you'll file two weekly claims before receiving your first payment. This confuses a lot of people.

•Oh that's good to know! I was wondering about the payment schedule too.

•Wait really? I thought payment was weekly too. So confusing!

•Nope, filing is weekly but payments come every two weeks. Check your ESD account for exact payment dates.

also make sure you're doing your job search requirements each week. i think its 3 job contacts per week minimum but double check that

•Yes I saw that mentioned. Do I need to keep records of my job searches?

•Absolutely keep detailed records. Washington ESD can audit your job search activities at any time. Date, company, position, method of contact - keep it all documented.

I've been filing weekly for 8 months now. Set a reminder on your phone for Sunday mornings. The system can be slow sometimes so don't wait until Saturday night to file.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Good tip about the reminder! I'll definitely set that up.

•Smart advice. I always file Sunday evening after dinner. Becomes routine.

One more thing - if you work any hours during a week, even just a few hours, you MUST report it on your weekly claim. Washington ESD will find out eventually and you could get hit with an overpayment notice.

•What if it's just a one-day temp job or something small?

Yuki Tanaka
•Doesn't matter how small. Report ALL work and income. Better safe than sorry with overpayments.

•This is so true. My friend got an overpayment notice for $2,800 because she didn't report some part-time work from months earlier.

The weekly claims usually ask the same questions each time: Did you look for work? Did you work any hours? Are you able and available for work? Pretty straightforward once you get used to it.

•That doesn't sound too complicated. Thanks for breaking it down!

Sometimes the ESD website is down for maintenance on Sunday mornings. Don't panic if you can't file right away - you have the whole week to submit your claim.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Good to know it's not just Sunday only. That gives me some flexibility.

•Right, but don't procrastinate. Better to file early in the week than risk forgetting.

If you run into issues with your weekly claims getting stuck or need to talk to someone at ESD, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I used it twice when my claims were showing as 'under review' and needed clarification.

•How much does something like that cost?

Carmen Diaz
•I don't want to get into pricing here, but for me it was worth it to actually reach a human at ESD instead of calling 50 times and getting busy signals.

Been on unemployment three different times over the years and it's always been weekly claims. Never changes. Set up your routine and stick to it.

just want to add that if you're on standby status (like seasonal layoff) the filing schedule is still weekly. same system different circumstances
0 coins
Mateo Rodriguez
•What's standby status? Is that different from regular unemployment?
0 coins
NeonNova
•Standby is when you have a definite return-to-work date with your employer, usually within 8 weeks. You still file weekly but don't have to do job search activities.

Make sure your contact info is updated in your ESD account too. They sometimes send important notices about your weekly claims via mail or text.

•I'll double-check that. Don't want to miss any important communications.

The weekly thing threw me off at first too because some other states do it differently. But Washington is definitely weekly. You'll get the hang of it quickly.

•Yeah I think I was confused because I have family in other states with different systems. Thanks for clarifying!

One last tip - keep your confirmation numbers from each weekly claim filing. Sometimes there are system glitches and having that confirmation number helps resolve issues faster.

Mateo Rodriguez
•Great advice! I'll make sure to screenshot or write down those confirmation numbers.

Thanks everyone for all the detailed responses! This really helped clear up my confusion. Weekly filing it is - I'll set up my Sunday routine starting this week.

This thread should be pinned! So many people get confused about the weekly vs monthly thing when they first start filing.

Just want to mention one more time for anyone reading this later - if you need to reach Washington ESD and can't get through by phone, check out Claimyr. Really helped me when I was stuck in the system. The demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ explains it better than I can.
