How do I know if my unemployment was denied - Washington ESD claim status confusion
I submitted my initial unemployment claim about two weeks ago and I'm getting really confused about what's happening with it. My Washington ESD account shows some kind of status but I can't tell if it means I was approved or denied. There's no clear message saying 'approved' or 'denied' anywhere that I can find. I've been filing my weekly claims but I haven't received any payments yet. The status just says something about 'determination pending' but I don't know what that actually means. Should I have gotten some kind of letter or notification by now? I'm starting to panic because I need to know if I should be looking for other options to pay my bills.

You should receive a determination letter in the mail within 7-10 business days of filing your initial claim. If your account shows 'determination pending' that usually means they're still processing your claim, not that it was denied. Check your SecureAccess Washington account for any documents or messages.

•I checked and there's nothing in my messages. Should I be worried that it's taking this long?

•Two weeks isn't unusual, especially if they need to verify your work history or wages. Keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

same thing happened to me last month, mine said pending for like 3 weeks before I got approved. the letter came in the mail before anything updated online

•That's reassuring to hear! Did you keep filing weekly claims during that time?

•yeah I kept filing every week like they tell you to do. got all my back pay once it was approved

If you were actually denied, you'd get a clear denial letter explaining why and your appeal rights. The fact that you're still able to file weekly claims is usually a good sign. Have you tried calling Washington ESD to check on the status?

•I've tried calling but I can never get through. The phone just rings and rings or I get a busy signal.

•Yeah the phone lines are terrible. I actually found this service called Claimyr that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that but I'm desperate to talk to someone. Is it legit?

DETERMINATION PENDING means they haven't made a decision yet!! It's not denied. You would know if you were denied because the letter would say DISQUALIFIED or INELIGIBLE in big letters.

•Okay that makes me feel better. I was reading way too much into it.

•Yeah don't stress yet. Pending just means they're still working on it.

I'm in the exact same boat! Filed 2.5 weeks ago and still showing determination pending. Haven't gotten any mail either. This is so stressful not knowing what's happening.

•Both of you just need to be patient. The system is backed up and it takes time to process claims properly.

•I know but when you need money for rent it's hard to be patient

Check if there are any issues showing under your claim that need to be resolved. Sometimes there are questions about your job separation or work search that can hold things up.

•Where do I look for that in my account?

•Log into your SecureAccess Washington account and look for any alerts or action items. There might be a section about pending issues or required actions.

honestly the whole system is a mess. took me 6 weeks to get my first payment last year even though I was eventually approved

•6 weeks?? That's terrifying

•That's why I mentioned Claimyr earlier - it really does help cut through the wait times when you need to actually speak to someone at Washington ESD.

You'll definitely get a letter if you're denied. They have to send written notice with appeal instructions. No letter usually means it's still processing.

•That's what I'm hoping. Just wish they'd communicate better about timelines.

•Yeah their communication is pretty bad. But the good news is if you qualify, you'll get paid retroactively from when you first filed.

Make sure you're checking both your online account AND your physical mailbox. Sometimes the online system doesn't update right away but they've already mailed your determination.

•I've been checking the mail every day. Nothing yet but I'll keep watching for it.

I had to wait almost a month for my determination last summer. Turned out they were waiting for my previous employer to respond to their inquiry about my job separation. Once that came through, I was approved within a few days.

•How did you find out that's what they were waiting for?

•I finally got through on the phone after calling for hours. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was holding up my claim.

•This is exactly why Claimyr is so helpful - saves you from having to spend hours trying to get through on your own.

If you're really worried, try logging in at different times of day. Sometimes the system shows different information depending on when their updates run.

Amy Fleming
•I never thought of that. I usually only check in the evening.

•Yeah try checking first thing in the morning or during lunch. That's when I've noticed changes show up.

also make sure you didn't miss any emails from them. check your spam folder too because sometimes their messages end up there

The waiting is the worst part honestly. But determination pending is definitely not the same as denied. You'd know for sure if you were denied.

•We've all been there! The uncertainty is really stressful when you're depending on those benefits.

Keep filing those weekly claims no matter what. Even if there's a delay in your determination, you want to make sure you don't miss any weeks that you're entitled to.

•Definitely will do. I've been filing every Sunday like clockwork.

I used Claimyr when I was in a similar situation and it was totally worth it. Got connected to an agent who could see exactly what was happening with my claim and gave me a timeline for when to expect my determination.

•It's reasonable and honestly worth it for the peace of mind. Way better than spending hours trying to get through on your own.

Two weeks really isn't that long in Washington ESD time unfortunately. I know it feels like forever when you're waiting for money but try to stay patient.

•You're right. I need to stop checking obsessively and just wait for the letter.

The determination letter will be very clear about whether you're approved or denied. It's usually 2-3 pages and explains everything in detail including your weekly benefit amount if approved.

•Good to know what to expect. I'll stop worrying until I actually get that letter.

Just to summarize for the OP - determination pending means still processing, not denied. Keep filing weekly claims, watch for mail, and if you need immediate answers, consider using a service like Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD faster than trying to call on your own.
