How do you know if you got approved for unemployment benefits in Washington?
I submitted my initial unemployment claim through Washington ESD about 10 days ago and I'm getting anxious because I haven't heard anything definitive yet. My account shows the claim was processed but I'm not sure if that means I'm approved or still pending. I've been doing my weekly claims but the payment status just says 'processed' with no dollar amount. Is there supposed to be some kind of official approval notification? Should I be worried that it's taking this long? My last job ended due to company downsizing so I don't think there should be any issues with eligibility.

You should receive a monetary determination letter either by mail or in your SecureAccess Washington account that shows your weekly benefit amount and how many weeks you're eligible for. If your weekly claims show 'processed' without payment amounts, you might still be in adjudication.

•I haven't gotten any letter yet. Should I be checking my SecureAccess account more frequently?

•Yes, check under 'Correspondence' in your account. Sometimes the letters show up there before they arrive by mail.

•Did your weekly claims show anything different once you were approved?

•yeah once approved the payment status changed to show the actual dollar amount instead of just 'processed

If you're still unsure about your approval status, you might want to try calling Washington ESD directly. I know the phone lines are always busy, but there's actually a service called Claimyr that helps you get through to agents faster. I found it at claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How does that work exactly? Do they just keep calling for you?

Eleanor Foster
•Basically they handle the calling and waiting so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. When they reach an agent, they connect you to discuss your claim status.

•That sounds helpful, I've tried calling three times and either got disconnected or gave up after an hour on hold.

The approval process has gotten so much more complicated since COVID. They're being extra careful about verifying everything now which means longer wait times. Your claim being 'processed' is actually a good sign - it means they've reviewed your basic eligibility and work history.

•THIS! Everyone freaks out about the wait but processed usually means you're good to go, just waiting for the final paperwork.

•That's reassuring to hear. I was starting to think something was wrong with my claim.

i've been waiting 4 weeks and still nothing!!! this system is completely broken, they're just letting people suffer while they take their sweet time

•Four weeks is definitely longer than normal. Have you tried checking if there are any outstanding issues or documents they need from you?

•checked everything multiple times, no issues showing up anywhere. just stuck in limbo

Here's what you should look for to confirm approval: 1) Monetary determination letter with your weekly benefit amount, 2) Your weekly claim payments should show actual dollar amounts instead of just 'processed', 3) You'll get a debit card in the mail if you chose that payment method, 4) Your claim balance will show the total benefits available to you.

•This is really helpful! I haven't seen any of these yet so I guess I'm still waiting for approval.

•Don't forget about the job search requirements letter too - that usually comes right after approval.

Quick question - if you're approved but then miss a weekly claim, do you lose your benefits completely? I'm worried about messing up the process somehow.

Gavin King
•No, missing one weekly claim won't disqualify you completely. You can usually file for the missed week later, though there might be a waiting period.

•Just don't make it a habit. Missing multiple weeks without good cause can definitely cause problems.

I actually used Claimyr when I was in a similar situation and it was a game changer. Got connected to an agent within 30 minutes who could see exactly where my claim stood in the approval process. Sometimes you just need that direct confirmation from someone at Washington ESD.

•I might have to try that. The uncertainty is driving me crazy.

•Is it expensive? I'm already tight on money waiting for benefits to start.

•It's worth it for the peace of mind, especially if you're dealing with any complications or delays in your claim.

honestly the whole system needs an overhaul. why can't they just send a simple email saying 'approved' or 'denied' instead of making us decode cryptic status messages

•Agreed! Other states have much clearer communication about claim status.

•The legal requirements around benefit determinations make it complicated, but I agree the user experience could be better.

Been there! The waiting period before you get that first determination letter feels like forever. Once you get it though, everything becomes much clearer about your benefits and requirements.

•How long did it take for you to get your letter?

•About 2 weeks from when I filed. But I've heard it varies a lot depending on how busy they are.

one thing that helped me was setting up text alerts in my account so i got notified whenever there was an update. saved me from constantly logging in to check

•Good idea! I didn't even know that was an option.

•Where do you find the text alert settings? I've been looking for that.

•should be under account preferences or notification settings, somewhere in the main menu

Just want to add that even after you're approved, it can take a few more days for the first payment to actually hit your account. Don't panic if you get your determination letter but don't see money right away.

•Good to know! I was wondering about the timing of actual payments.

Ian Armstrong
•Yeah, there's usually a 2-3 day processing delay even after everything is approved.

I remember being in your exact situation last year. The anxiety of not knowing if you're approved while bills are piling up is terrible. But 10 days is still within normal processing time, especially for a straightforward layoff case like yours.

•Thank you for the reassurance. It's helpful to hear from people who've been through this.

has anyone had issues with the debit card not arriving even after approval? my cousin got approved 3 weeks ago but still hasn't received her card
0 coins
Gavin King
•That's unusual. She should call the debit card customer service number, not Washington ESD, since it's handled by a different company.

•ah ok didn't know that, i'll tell her to try that number instead

The key thing is not to stress too much if you don't see immediate updates. Washington ESD processes thousands of claims and they have to verify employment history with your previous employers. That verification step can add time but it's necessary.
0 coins
Mohammed Khan
•That makes sense. I hadn't thought about them having to contact my previous employer.

Sofia Price
•Some employers are faster than others at responding to those verification requests too.

Pro tip: if you do end up needing to call Washington ESD, try calling right when they open at 8 AM or during lunch hour around noon. Those tend to be slightly less busy times.

Mohammed Khan
•I'll try that if I don't hear anything in the next few days.

•I had better luck with the lunch hour timing personally.

Another option is using that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it really does work for getting through to agents when you need answers about your claim status.

Just remember that no news is usually good news with unemployment claims. If there were serious issues with your eligibility, you'd typically hear about those pretty quickly.

•That's a good point. I guess I should take the lack of rejection letters as a positive sign.

•Exactly! They're quick to tell you about problems but take their time with approvals.

Been unemployed twice in the past 5 years and both times the approval process felt like it took forever even though it was actually pretty standard timing. The waiting is just part of the process unfortunately.
