How long for first SDI payment after filing claim?
Hey everyone, I filed a disability claim recently and I'm wondering how long it usually takes to get the first payment. Anyone have experience with this? I'm getting a bit anxious waiting and could use some advice on what to expect.

It really depends on when you filed and how backed up the system is. In my experience, it took about 3-4 weeks to get my first payment after filing. Have you checked your claim status online?

ā¢Thanks for the info! I filed about 2 weeks ago, so I guess I might have to wait a bit longer. I'll check the online status, good idea.

ā¢Wow, 2 months? That's rough. I guess I did get lucky. OP, hopefully your wait is closer to my experience than @profile 2's!

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

ā¢Sounds too good to be true. Has anyone else tried this?

ā¢$20 just to talk to someone? That's crazy, we shouldn't have to pay for customer service!

ā¢I know it sounds sketchy, but I swear it worked for me. Saved me hours of frustration. But yeah, it sucks we have to pay extra just to get help.

Here's what I've learned from my experience with disability claims: ⢠First payments usually take 2-6 weeks, depending on workload ⢠Make sure all your paperwork is filled out correctly ⢠Double-check that your doctor submitted everything on time ⢠Keep checking your online account for updates ⢠If you haven't heard anything after 4 weeks, try calling (but be prepared for long wait times) Hang in there, OP! The waiting game is tough, but you'll get through it.

Has anyone tried contacting their local representative? I've heard that sometimes they can help speed things up.

ā¢I did this! It actually helped a lot. My rep's office contacted EDD and suddenly my claim started moving. Def worth a shot!

Pro tip: document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every online status update. You never know when you might need that info later.

I'm currently going through this too! Filed my claim about 10 days ago and the waiting is killing me. From what I've read online and heard from friends, it seems like the timeline really varies - some people get their first payment in 2-3 weeks if everything goes smoothly, but others wait much longer if there are any issues with documentation or if EDD needs additional info. One thing that's helped my anxiety is setting up text alerts through the EDD portal so I get notified of any status changes. Also, make sure you're certifying for benefits every two weeks once that option becomes available - that's super important! Fingers crossed we both hear something soon š¤
