Will I get my first EDD SDI payment after waiting period ends on 11/24?

Hey everyone! I filed my disability claim on 11/16 and noticed my SDI Online account shows a waiting period from 11/16-11/24. Does this mean my first payment should arrive the following Sunday (two weeks after filing)? I'm trying to budget for bills and really need to know when that first deposit will hit my account. My doctor confirmed they submitted all the medical certification forms right away. Is the payment schedule pretty reliable or should I expect delays? This is my first time on disability and I'm totally confused about the payment timeline.

Seriously?? 3 weeks after the waiting period?? That's going to put me in a really tight spot financially. Did they backpay you for those weeks at least?

The waiting period is the 7-day period where you're not eligible for benefits. After that, you're eligible for payment, but processing time varies. Technically, if everything was submitted correctly (your claim and your doctor's certification) and there are no issues that require additional review, you could receive payment within 7-10 days after your waiting period ends. However, realistically, it's often taking 10-14 days after the waiting period in 2025, sometimes longer if there are any flags on your claim that need manual review.

Thank you for explaining! My doctor definitely submitted everything on time, but how would I know if there are any "flags" on my claim? My account just shows the claim as active with that waiting period listed.

I just went through this last month. After my waiting period ended, it took exactly 12 days to get my first payment. And yes, they do backdate it to cover the period after your waiting period ended, so you won't lose any money - just might have to wait a bit. Make sure you've completed your certification if they asked for one (sometimes they don't for the first payment, depending on your claim type).

That's somewhat reassuring! I don't see anything about certification in my account yet - just the claim submission and waiting period info. Should I be looking somewhere specific for certification instructions?

Oh no, I have no idea what code they used! I'm going to call my doctor's office tomorrow to double check. Thanks for the heads up!

If you're concerned about the status of your claim, you're going to need to speak with an actual EDD representative. I was in the same boat last month and spent days trying to get through on their phone lines. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they have a system that connects you directly to an EDD agent without the endless waiting and disconnections. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd that shows how it works. The agent was able to tell me exactly what was happening with my claim and when to expect payment. Saved me a lot of stress.

is that service legit? sounds sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call for you

It's completely legitimate - they don't make the call for you, they get you through the phone system so you're actually connected to a real EDD agent. Then you talk directly to EDD yourself. I was desperate after trying for days to get through.

I might check that out if I don't see any updates soon. At this point I'd try anything to get some clarity on when I'll get paid!

The EDD system is COMPLETE GARBAGE in 2025!!! I had to wait 23 DAYS after my waiting period for my first payment!!! Called 47 times and couldn't get through!!! They claim "10 business days" but that's a LIE!!! Nobody answers phones, nobody responds to online messages, and they expect us to survive with NO INCOME while they take their sweet time!!! The whole department needs to be investigated!!!

Wait, it's not that bad for everyone. My claim was processed pretty quickly last month. I think it depends on which office handles your claim and how complicated your medical situation is. Not defending EDD but just saying experiences vary.

Just to clarify some information here: After your waiting period (11/16-11/24), you become eligible for benefits starting 11/25. The first payment typically covers the period from when your eligibility begins (11/25) through the end of the benefit week. EDD typically processes payments within 14 days after the end of each benefit period, though as others have mentioned, there can be delays. If your claim has no issues, you should receive payment for the period of 11/25 onward, but it may not arrive until mid-December. If you need to check on status, definitely try to reach a representative directly.

This is super helpful! So it sounds like even in the best case scenario, I shouldn't expect payment until at least a week into December. I need to adjust my budget expectations. Thank you!

Just wanted to follow up - did you end up getting your payment? Any updates? I'm curious because I'm about to file my claim next week and want to know what to expect.

Update: I finally got my first payment yesterday - so it took 16 days after my waiting period ended. I did end up using that Claimyr service to reach EDD after getting worried, and they told me there was a small issue with my employer verification that was fixed. The payment included everything from 11/25 forward, so I didn't lose any money, just had to wait. Hope your claim goes smoothly!
