How long does EDD SDI medical form processing take? First-time applicant confused

So I just submitted my first disability claim through EDD's website yesterday and I'm a bit lost on what happens next. My account is showing "pending medical provider form" status. Does EDD mail me a form that I need to take to my doctor? Or does my doctor get the form directly from EDD? I'm really confused about this process. My doctor already knows I'm filing for disability but I didn't give him any paperwork yet. Also, once everything is submitted correctly, how long does it typically take to get approved and receive my first payment? I'm worried about bills piling up while I wait. Anyone who's been through this recently, your help would be greatly appreciated!

the doctor has to fill out the form online now, EDD doesnt mail stuff anymore. u need to tell ur doc to submit the certification, they have their own portal to do it. took me like 3 weeks to get approved after doc submitted everything

Thank you! I didn't know the doctor does it online. How does my doctor know to submit it though? Should I call their office and remind them?

When you filed your claim online, you should have received a receipt number. Your doctor will need this number plus your last name and date of birth to complete the medical certification through SDI Online. Many doctor's offices are familiar with this process, but it's always good to call your doctor's office to make sure they have all the information they need to complete the form. Regarding the processing time - once your doctor submits the medical certification, it typically takes 7-14 days for EDD to process and approve your claim, assuming there are no issues or missing information. Remember there's a 7-day unpaid waiting period before benefits begin. If your claim is approved, you'll receive a Notice of Computation showing your weekly benefit amount. If your doctor submitted the certification within a day or two of you filing, you might receive your first payment within 2-3 weeks of your initial filing date. If your doctor takes longer to submit, everything gets delayed accordingly.

This is so helpful! I did get a receipt number but I didn't realize that's what my doctor would need. I'll call them tomorrow morning. I hope they don't take too long to submit their part - I really need this to process quickly.

EDD is TRASH at communicating what you need to do!!!! I went through this same exact thing in January and ended up waiting FIVE WEEKS because nobody told me my doctor needed to submit stuff online. My doctor's office had no idea either until I called them after waiting for weeks. The whole system is designed to make people give up, I swear. Call your doctor IMMEDIATELY and make sure they do their part.

That's frustrating but not typical. Most claims are processed within 14 days after the medical certification is received. The key is making sure your physician submits the certification promptly. The EDD does provide instructions during the claim filing process, but I agree they could make it clearer.

I just went through this last month! The status "pending medical provider form" means exactly what it sounds like - they're waiting for your doctor to submit the medical certification. Your doctor doesn't automatically know you filed - you need to tell them and give them your claim number. Once they submit, it took about 10 days for my claim to be approved. Good luck!

Thank you! I'll let my doctor know right away. Did you have to keep certifying for benefits every two weeks like with unemployment, or is disability different?

my sister is on disability and she said make sure u call ur doctor cuz sometimes they forget to do the forms and then ur just waiting for nothing. also the first payment takes longest, after that its every 2 weeks i think

•

That's correct. After the initial claim is processed, payments are typically issued every two weeks. However, unlike unemployment, with SDI you don't need to certify every two weeks. For claims less than 30 days, no ongoing certification is required. For longer claims, EDD typically sends a continued claim certification form (DE 2500A) automatically when it's time to certify.

I was in the same boat a few months ago and spent HOURS trying to reach EDD to get answers. After getting disconnected dozens of times, I finally discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 30 minutes instead of spending days trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep confirmed that my doctor needed to complete the medical certification form through their physician portal, and they even sent my doctor a reminder. Without that call, I might still be waiting! Once my doctor submitted everything, my claim was processed within 8 business days.

is that service legit? seems weird to pay just to talk to edd

To add some important context: When you filed your claim online, your doctor should have received an electronic notification if you provided their information correctly. However, many physicians don't regularly check the SDI system, so it's always best to contact your doctor's office directly. For timeline expectations: 1. Medical certification submission: Ideally within 3-5 days of your claim filing 2. EDD processing time: Typically 7-14 business days after receiving medical certification 3. First payment: Usually arrives 2-3 days after claim approval (via EDD debit card or direct deposit if you set it up) If your claim shows "pending medical provider form" for more than 7 days after you've confirmed your doctor submitted their certification, that's when you should contact EDD for clarification.

Thank you for these specific timelines! I just called my doctor and they're submitting the certification today. They said they never received an electronic notification, which seems to be a common issue from what everyone is saying. Hopefully everything goes smoothly from here.

One more thing - when your doctor does submit the form, you won't automatically get notified! You have to keep checking your SDI Online account to see if the status changes. This tripped me up and I didn't realize my doctor had already submitted until I called them to check. The whole system could use better tracking and notifications honestly.

That's really good to know! I'll make sure to check my account daily. Seems like there are a lot of small details they don't tell you upfront.

Anybody else notice how they make this process DELIBERATELY confusing?? My theory is they're hoping people will give up and not collect benefits they're entitled to. I had to submit my disability paperwork TWICE because they claimed they never received the first submission even though my doctor had confirmation!

Just wanted to share my recent experience to help you out! I filed my SDI claim about 6 weeks ago and ran into similar confusion. The "pending medical provider form" status means your doctor needs to complete their part online through the SDI physician portal. Here's what I learned: EDD doesn't automatically notify doctors reliably, so definitely call your doctor's office ASAP with your claim receipt number. My doctor's office had no idea I had filed until I called them directly. Once my doctor submitted the medical certification (took them 2 days after I called), my claim status changed to "under review" within 24 hours. Then it took exactly 9 business days to get approved. My first payment showed up on the EDD debit card 3 days after approval. Pro tip: Set up text alerts in your SDI Online account so you get notified when your status changes - it saved me from constantly checking the website! Good luck with your claim!

0 coins

This is exactly what I needed to hear! Thank you for sharing your timeline - 9 business days for approval after the doctor submitted sounds reasonable. I didn't know about the text alerts feature, that's a great tip. I'll definitely set that up once I get home. It's reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this recently and got it sorted out relatively quickly.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! Filed my claim 3 days ago and have been stressing about the "pending medical provider form" status. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea my doctor needed to submit their part online through a separate portal. Just called my doctor's office and they confirmed they haven't received any notification from EDD, which seems to be the norm based on everyone's experiences here. They're going to submit the medical certification tomorrow morning using my receipt number. One question for those who've been through this - did any of you have issues with your doctor not knowing how to use the SDI physician portal? My doctor's office seemed a bit confused about the online submission process when I called. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and experiences. It's really reassuring to know that most people get approved within 2 weeks once the doctor submits everything!

0 coins

I'm so glad this thread is helping you too! Yes, some doctor's offices do get confused about the online portal - it happened with my physician as well. What helped was giving them the direct link to the SDI Online physician portal (they can find it by searching "SDI Online physician" on the EDD website). I also made sure to give them my full name exactly as it appears on my claim, my date of birth, and that receipt number. Some offices have never used the system before, so don't be surprised if they need to call EDD's physician support line for help. The important thing is that you contacted them early - that's where a lot of people lose time. Sounds like you're on the right track!

Hey! I just went through this process about 2 months ago and totally understand the confusion. The "pending medical provider form" status basically means EDD is waiting for your doctor to complete their part online - they don't mail anything anymore. Here's what you need to do RIGHT NOW: Call your doctor's office and give them your claim receipt number, full name, and date of birth. Tell them you filed an SDI claim and they need to complete the medical certification through the SDI Online physician portal. Don't wait - many doctors' offices don't check their EDD notifications regularly (or sometimes don't get them at all). For timeline expectations: Once your doctor submits their form, it typically takes 7-14 business days for EDD to process everything. Add the 7-day unpaid waiting period, and you're looking at roughly 2-3 weeks total from when your doctor submits to when you get your first payment. Pro tip: Log into your SDI Online account daily to check for status updates. You won't get automatic notifications when things change, so you have to stay on top of it yourself. The status will change from "pending medical provider form" to "under review" once your doctor submits. Don't stress too much - most people get approved as long as their doctor completes the form properly. Just make sure to follow up with your doctor's office if you don't see a status change within a few days!

This is such a comprehensive breakdown, thank you! I'm definitely calling my doctor first thing tomorrow morning with all that information. It's crazy how EDD doesn't make this process clearer from the start - I had no idea I needed to proactively contact my doctor or that they had to use a separate online portal. The timeline you provided is really helpful too. I was panicking thinking it might take months, but 2-3 weeks total sounds much more manageable. I'll make sure to check my account daily for status updates. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain everything so clearly!

I'm currently going through this exact same process and this thread has been a lifesaver! Filed my claim 4 days ago and was getting really anxious about the "pending medical provider form" status. After reading everyone's experiences, I immediately called my doctor's office this morning with my receipt number and all the details. Turns out they had no clue about the SDI Online physician portal (seems to be a common theme here). The medical assistant had to transfer me to their billing department who handles these types of forms. They're familiar with the system now and said they'll submit the medical certification by end of day tomorrow. One thing I wanted to add that I haven't seen mentioned - my doctor's office told me that EDD sometimes has technical issues with their physician portal, especially on Mondays and Fridays when volume is high. They recommended submitting mid-week if possible to avoid any glitches that could delay processing. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and tips! It's reassuring to know that most people get through this process in 2-3 weeks once everything is submitted properly. I'll definitely be checking my account daily and will update if I run into any issues.

That's really interesting about the technical issues on Mondays and Fridays - I hadn't heard that before but it makes total sense with higher volume! Thanks for sharing that tip about mid-week submissions. It's so frustrating how many doctor's offices seem unfamiliar with this process, but at least your billing department knew what to do. Sounds like you're all set now! I'd love to hear how long it takes once they submit everything. This whole thread has been incredibly helpful for all of us going through this confusing process for the first time.

I'm a new member here and just wanted to say how incredibly helpful this entire thread has been! I'm dealing with the exact same situation - filed my SDI claim 2 days ago and have been completely lost about what "pending medical provider form" actually means. After reading all your experiences, I now understand that my doctor needs to submit their part through the online physician portal and that EDD doesn't reliably notify them. I'm calling my doctor's office first thing Monday morning with my receipt number and all the required info. It's honestly shocking how poorly EDD communicates this process. If it weren't for finding this community and reading everyone's real experiences, I'd probably still be sitting here waiting for something to arrive in the mail! The timelines you've all shared (2-3 weeks total once doctor submits) are also really reassuring. Thank you all for being so detailed about your experiences - it's making this stressful process much more manageable for newcomers like me. I'll definitely be checking my SDI account daily and will try to update with my timeline once things move forward!

Welcome to the community! I'm so glad you found this thread helpful - I was in the exact same boat when I first filed my claim. The lack of clear communication from EDD is really frustrating, but at least we can help each other figure it out! When you call your doctor's office on Monday, make sure to ask them to confirm they successfully submitted the form and maybe get a reference number if they provide one. Some offices forget to actually hit "submit" after filling everything out (happened to a friend of mine). Also, don't be discouraged if your doctor's office seems confused about the process at first - most of them figure it out pretty quickly once they know what they're looking for. Good luck with your claim! This community is really supportive, so definitely keep us updated on how it goes. The waiting is stressful but knowing what to expect really does help.

I'm new to this community and going through my first SDI claim too! Filed 3 days ago and was completely confused about the "pending medical provider form" status until I found this thread. Reading everyone's experiences has been so helpful - I had no idea that EDD expects the doctor to submit everything online through their separate portal, and apparently they don't even reliably notify doctors! I called my doctor's office yesterday after reading all your advice about providing the receipt number, full name, and DOB. Turns out they had zero clue about any SDI claim I filed (no surprise there based on everyone's stories). The front desk transferred me to their medical records department who handles these forms. They seemed familiar with the SDI Online physician portal and said they'd submit the medical certification within 24-48 hours. One question for those who've been through this - after your doctor submitted the form, how quickly did your status change from "pending medical provider form" to something else? I want to know when I should start worrying if I don't see any updates. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and tips! This process is stressful enough without having to guess what you're supposed to do next. Really appreciate this community for filling in the gaps that EDD leaves.

Welcome to the community! I'm glad you found this thread as helpful as I did when I was starting my claim process. Great job on calling your doctor's office right away - that proactive approach will definitely save you time! To answer your question about status changes: In my experience, the status typically updates within 24-48 hours after your doctor successfully submits the medical certification. So if your medical records department submits it today or tomorrow like they said, you should see the status change from "pending medical provider form" to "under review" by early next week. If you don't see any status change by Friday (assuming they submit by Wednesday), I'd recommend calling your doctor's office to confirm they actually completed the submission. Sometimes there can be technical hiccups or they might have encountered issues with the physician portal. The good news is that once you see that status change to "under review," you're in the home stretch! Most people see approval within 7-14 business days after that. Keep checking your SDI Online account daily - you've got this!

Just wanted to share my recent experience to hopefully help ease your anxiety! Like everyone else has mentioned, your doctor definitely needs to submit their part online through the SDI physician portal - EDD doesn't mail anything anymore. The key thing is calling your doctor's office ASAP with your receipt number. I made the mistake of waiting a week thinking EDD would automatically contact my doctor, but they never did. After that, my status changed to "under review" within 24 hours, and I got approved exactly 10 business days later. My first payment hit the EDD debit card 2 days after approval. One tip that really helped me: I set up account alerts in SDI Online so I got text notifications when my status changed. Saved me from obsessively checking the website every few hours! Don't stress too much about the timeline - as long as your doctor submits everything properly, most people get approved within 2-3 weeks total. The hardest part is just getting your doctor to complete their portion, which it sounds like you're already on top of. You've got this!

Thank you so much for sharing your timeline! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this successfully. 10 business days for approval after the doctor submitted sounds very reasonable, and knowing that the first payment came just 2 days after approval helps me plan better financially. I definitely need to set up those text alerts - constantly refreshing the website is already driving me crazy and I just started this process! Your experience gives me confidence that as long as I stay on top of my doctor's office and make sure they actually submit the form, everything should work out within that 2-3 week timeframe. Really appreciate you taking the time to share the specific details and timeline!

I'm new to this community and currently going through my first SDI claim - filed just yesterday and found this thread while searching for answers about the "pending medical provider form" status. Reading through everyone's experiences has been incredibly eye-opening and honestly a huge relief! I had no idea that my doctor needed to submit their part through a separate online portal, and like so many others have mentioned, EDD's communication about this process is pretty terrible. I was sitting here expecting something to arrive in the mail when apparently that's not how it works anymore. Thanks to all the advice here, I'm calling my doctor's office first thing tomorrow with my receipt number and all the required information. It's concerning but not surprising that so many doctor's offices seem unfamiliar with the SDI physician portal - hopefully mine will know what to do or can figure it out quickly. The timelines everyone has shared (2-3 weeks total once the doctor submits) are really helpful for setting expectations. I was worried this might take months, so knowing most people get through the process relatively quickly is reassuring. Welcome to the community! I'm also new here and just went through this exact same realization yesterday when I found this thread. It's honestly ridiculous how EDD doesn't clearly explain that doctors need to use their own online portal - I was also waiting for mail that was never going to come! When you call your doctor's office tomorrow, definitely emphasize that they need to submit through the "SDI Online physician portal" specifically. From what I've read here, some offices get confused if you're not specific about which system to use. Also make sure to get confirmation that they actually submitted it, not just that they will - seems like some offices forget the final submission step. This community has been such a lifesaver for figuring out what EDD should have told us from the start. Good luck with your call tomorrow! Hopefully your doctor's office is more familiar with the process than most seem to be.

After reading everyone's experiences, I immediately called my doctor's office this morning with my receipt number, full name, and DOB. Just like so many others have mentioned, they had no idea I had filed a claim and weren't familiar with the SDI Online physician portal at first. I had to explain the whole process based on what I learned here! Thankfully, their billing coordinator knew about the system once I mentioned it specifically. They're going to submit the medical certification by tomorrow afternoon. One thing I'm curious about - for those who've completed this process, did you get any kind of confirmation email or notification when your doctor successfully submitted their part? Or do you just have to keep checking your SDI account for status changes? The 2-3 week timeline everyone has shared is such a relief. I was panicking thinking this might take months. Thank you all for sharing your real experiences and making this process so much less stressful for newcomers like me!

Welcome to the community and great job calling your doctor's office so quickly! To answer your question about confirmations - unfortunately, you won't get any automatic notification when your doctor submits the medical certification. You just have to keep checking your SDI Online account daily for status changes. It's frustrating but that's how the system works. What you're looking for is the status to change from "pending medical provider form" to "under review" - that's your confirmation that your doctor successfully submitted everything. This usually happens within 24-48 hours of submission, so if your billing coordinator submits by tomorrow afternoon, you should see the status change by early next week. It sounds like you're on the right track! The fact that their billing coordinator was familiar with the system once you mentioned it specifically is a good sign. Just make sure to follow up with them if you don't see a status change by Tuesday or Wednesday to confirm they actually completed the submission. Good luck with your claim!
