EDD stopped my disability payments due to misunderstood income sources - need help explaining!
Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle with my disability benefits. My claim was approved until next year, but my payments suddenly stopped last month. I've been calling for weeks trying to get this sorted out, but no luck so far. I just spoke with an agent who mentioned I received payments from my employer, a medical practice I'm invested in, and had to take some money out of my retirement account. Now they're saying these might be affecting my benefits. Has anyone dealt with something similar? How do I explain that these aren't actual income from work? Any advice would be appreciated!

Ugh, the EDD is such a nightmare to deal with! 🤦♂️ I've been in a similar situation. Here's what you need to do: 1. Document everything! Write down dates, times, and names of who you talked to. 2. Explain clearly that the employer payment was a bonus, not regular income. 3. For the medical practice, emphasize that you're a passive investor, not actively working there. 4. The retirement account withdrawal is due to financial hardship, not income. 5. Request a formal review of your case in writing. 6. If possible, get letters from your employer and the medical practice confirming these details. Stay persistent! It might take a while, but keep pushing. Good luck!

This is solid advice! 💯 I'd add one more thing - ask for a supervisor if the regular agent isn't helpful. Sometimes they have more authority to fix issues.

Thanks so much for this detailed response! I'll definitely follow these steps. Quick question - how long did it take for your situation to get resolved?

It took about 6 weeks for me, but I've heard it can vary. Just keep at it and don't let them forget about your case!

Have you tried reaching out to your local state representative? Sometimes they can help push things along with EDD. Worth a shot!

This! My cousin did this and got her issue resolved in like a week. Definitely worth trying.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How long did you have to wait after using this service?

It varied, but usually between 30 mins to an hour. Way better than the 3+ hours I was waiting before!

Have you considered hiring an attorney specializing in disability claims? They might be able to navigate the system more effectively.

Lawyers are expensive tho. Might not be worth it unless you're dealing with a huge amount of money.

True, but some offer free consultations. Could be worth at least talking to one to see if they think you have a case.

Pro tip: Always ask for a reference number for your call and the agent's ID number. Makes it easier to follow up and shows you mean business. 😎

Hey OP, when you talk to them next time, make sure to emphasize that the retirement withdrawal was due to hardship caused by the disability. That might help your case.
