EDD disability debit card is a nightmare - can't transfer money easily

I'm on week 6 of my disability leave for a herniated disc, and I FINALLY got my EDD Bank of America debit card in the mail last week. Thought it would be simple to transfer the money to my regular bank, but holy cow this system is terrible! First, the activation process kept timing out. Then, the mobile app crashed THREE times while trying to set up my account. When I finally got in, the balance showed $0 even though my claim says I've been paid $3,800 so far! I tried linking the card to my Venmo but it got rejected. Attempted using Zelle through the BofA app and it says 'feature unavailable for this account type.' The nearest BofA branch is 45 minutes away in an area I really don't want to drive to with my back pain. Is anyone else dealing with this awful debit card system? Have you found ANY way to transfer money out without physically going to a branch? I never expected the payment part would be the most stressful thing about disability!

The EDD/BofA debit card system is definitely frustrating but there are ways to handle it! I went through this last year during my pregnancy disability leave. You CAN set up direct transfer to your bank account through the BofA prepaid website (not the regular BofA site). Go to www.prepaid.bankofamerica.com/eddcard and set up recurring transfers. It takes about 3 business days for transfers to complete. If the app isn't working, try the desktop website instead. Mobile apps for government services are notoriously buggy. If your balance shows $0 when you know you've been paid, call the number on the back of your card - sometimes they put a fraud hold on first-time payments until you verify your identity.

omg YES the card is the WORST!! i had same issue last month & ended up having to call them 4 times!!! turns out they blocked my payments bc they thought it was fraud or something?? had to verify my identity and then wait another 5 days for the $ to show up. so frustrating!!!

This happened to me too! The fraud department is overly aggressive with these EDD cards. It's actually kind of ridiculous that they don't tell you this might happen when they mail the card. I had to call THREE separate times before I got someone who could actually help me release the funds. Keep trying!

If you're having trouble reaching someone at Bank of America about your EDD debit card, you might want to try Claimyr. Yes, it worked for me. I was skeptical too, but after spending literally 2 hours on hold one day and then getting disconnected, I was desperate. The service connected me directly to someone who could help with my EDD card specifically.

the whole disability system is designed to be hard to use on purpose if u ask me... they make it complicated so ppl give up and dont get their money. i had same issue last year and ended up just going to the ATM and withdrawing cash every week. not ideal but at least i got my $$

There are a few options for transferring your EDD disability payments from the BofA card that many people don't know about: 1. i had this exact same problem!!! what worked for me was setting up my regular bank as a "bill payment" in the BofA prepaid website and then "paying" my bank account. sounds weird but it worked! took about 3 days for the money to show up in my account.

That's good advice about keeping the card active. I'll definitely do that since I might need surgery later this year. And you're right about the irony - I'm on disability because sitting in a car for long periods is painful, yet their solution is for me to drive 45 minutes to a bank branch! Makes no sense.

ok here's a weird trick that worked for me!! i linked my edd card to paypal then transferred from paypal to my bank!!! the stupid bofa app wouldn't let me link directly but paypal worked fine! might be worth a try??
