EDD denying SDI claim despite sufficient contributions - how to prove payments and appeal?
I'm so frustrated with EDD right now. They told me I don't qualify for disability insurance because I didn't pay enough into SDI. But I have all my pay stubs showing I've paid way more than the minimum $300 they require! Has anyone else dealt with this? How did you prove your contributions? I'm worried about my appeal and could use some advice on how to handle this situation.

I found a way to solve proving SDI contributions to EDD, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2g6BmUfD-c

Unpopular opinion: maybe we should privatize unemployment insurance? The government clearly can't handle it efficiently.

Because private insurance companies are sooo much better? 🙄

Terrible idea. That would just make it even harder for people who need help to get it.

Interesting thought. What would that even look like in practice?

Bruh, I feel your pain. EDD is a hot mess. Took me 6 months to get my claim sorted. Hang in there and keep pushing!

idk man, maybe double check your math? Not trying to be a jerk, but I've seen people mess up their calculations before. Make sure you're only counting SDI deductions and not conflating it with other taxes.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've triple-checked my math. I'm 100% certain I've paid more than $300 into SDI.

Fair enough. Just wanted to make sure. EDD can be a real pain in the ass. Hope you get it sorted!

I've heard rumors that EDD is updating their system soon. Anyone know if that's true or just wishful thinking?

Lol, they've been saying that for years. I'll believe it when I see it.

My cousin works in IT for the state (not EDD tho) and says it's actually happening this time. Fingers crossed! 🤞

This is why we need to overhaul the entire unemployment system. It's designed to be confusing and difficult on purpose. Vote for politicians who prioritize fixing these broken systems! 💯

It's true. We need to hold our elected officials accountable for improving these essential systems.

have you tried reaching out to your local assembly member? They can sometimes help cut through the red tape 🤔

I didn't even know that was an option! How do I find my assembly member?

Just google "[your city] assembly member". They usually have a form on their website for constituent services. Good luck!

My friend did this and it really helped move things along. They have more direct channels to communicate with EDD.

Have you tried sacrificing a goat to the EDD gods? Might be more effective than actually dealing with their bureaucracy 😂

Lol, at this point I'm willing to try anything! 🐐

yall ever notice how these government systems always work perfectly when they want money FROM us, but never when they're supposed to give money TO us? 🤔

Lol good luck with that. I spent 3 weeks trying to get someone on the phone. EDD's phone system is a joke

I found a way to get through! There's this site called claimyr.com that has a calling tool. It dials the menu, waits on hold, and then connects you when an agent picks up. Costs $20 but totally worth it. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Ive been in the same boat. here's what worked for me: 1. Made a spreadsheet with all my SDI contributions 2. Took clear photos of each paystub 3. Wrote a letter explaining the situation 4. Sent it all by certified mail AND faxed it 5. Called every day until I got through It took about 3 weeks, but they finally fixed it. Don't give up!

Np! I just made a simple table with columns for date, gross wages, SDI deduction, and a running total. Keep it simple and clear 👍

This happened to my cousin. Turns out EDD had some of his wages recorded under the wrong SSN. Double-check that all your wages are correctly attributed to you!

Pro tip: if you can afford it, hire an employment lawyer. They know all the ins and outs of dealing with EDD and can often get things resolved much faster.

Hey OP, as frustrating as EDD can be, there are a few more things you can do beyond what's already been suggested. It may be worth contacting a union or a local nonprofit that specializes in workers' rights for additional guidance. These organizations often have experience dealing with EDD and can provide free assistance or resources tailored to your situation. Similarly, attending local community meetings where elected officials are present could provide you an opportunity to voice your concerns directly. Lastly, maintaining a calm demeanor, documenting everything, and using all available channels to communicate will increase your chances of resolving this issue swiftly. Hang in there!

Ugh, classic EDD nonsense. I went through something similar last year. Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather ALL your pay stubs showing SDI deductions 2. Calculate the total amount you've paid into SDI 3. Write a clear, concise letter explaining the situation 4. Include copies of your pay stubs with the letter 5. Send everything via certified mail so you have proof they received it Don't let them brush you off! Keep pushing until they acknowledge your evidence.

Hey, former EDD employee here. Here's some insider advice: 1. Always appeal. Many claims are initially denied due to automated systems. 2. Be persistent but polite. The person on the other end is probably overworked and underpaid. 3. Use exact language from EDD's website/forms in your communications. 4. Keep a log of every interaction - date, time, who you spoke to, what was said. 5. If possible, try to get things in writing (email or letter) rather than just phone calls. Good luck! The system sucks, but don't give up.
