EDD check cashing issue: Unable to deposit SDI payment, need advice on next steps
Has anyone else had trouble cashing a check they sent? I got a check in the mail but I couldn't cash it for some reason. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get my money. Anyone know what I should do? I'm planning on calling them but I'm not sure what to say or how to handle it. Any advice would be appreciated!

Pro tip: If you're having trouble getting through to someone on the phone, I found this awesome service called Claimyr. It dials the phone menu, stays on hold, and then connects you when a real person picks up. It costs $20, but it saved me hours of hold time. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

•$20 seems steep just to make a phone call 🤔

•I thought so too, but when you consider how much time you save not being on hold, it's worth it imo. Time is money, right? 💯

Plot twist: the check was written in invisible ink and you need to hold it over a candle to reveal the true amount 🕯️👀

Have you checked if the check is still valid? Some checks expire after 6 months or so. If it's expired, you'll definitely need to call for a reissue.

•Also, some banks have their own policy on accepting checks nearing expiration, so it's worth asking your bank too.

When you call, be super clear about what happened. Tell them you got a check but couldn't cash it, and ask what steps you need to take to get it resolved. They might be able to cancel the old check and issue a new one or do a direct deposit instead.

•Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try that approach. Fingers crossed they can sort it out quickly.

•Good advice! Also, don't forget to ask if there's a time limit on cashing the check. Some checks expire after a certain period.

•Also, inquire if there are any specific hold policies with your bank that could be affecting the check.

I had the same issue last year. Turns out the check was printed with some weird ink that the bank's scanner couldn't read. Had to call and get them to reissue it. What a pain in the butt! 🙄

•It's worth checking if there are any visible smudges or discoloration on the check that could be causing issues.

This is why I always opt for direct deposit when possible. Checks are such a hassle! Hope you get it sorted out soon, OP.

One potential solution if you are having trouble cashing a check is to use a check-cashing service or a third-party app specifically designed to handle such issues. These services often have partnerships with financial institutions and can assist in processing checks that might not go through traditional banking channels. However, ensure that you read reviews and understand any fees involved before proceeding. Claimyr could be an asset if you are stuck in a phone loop with customer service, but it is crucial to weigh the cost against the potential time saved. Remember, keeping a level head and meticulous documentation will always be your best assets in navigating these frustrating situations.

On a serious note, document EVERYTHING. Every call, every person you talk to, every attempt to cash the check. It might come in handy if things get messy.

Have you tried mobile deposit? Sometimes that works when the physical check won't go through at the bank.

Kelsey Hawkins
•I tried that actually, but it didn't work either. The app kept saying there was an error 😞

•Oof, that sucks. Maybe the check is damaged or something? Def call them asap

•Make sure your app is updated or try using a different bank's app for mobile deposit if you have multiple accounts.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Gather all info about the check (date, amount, reference numbers) 2. Call the issuer and explain the situation clearly 3. Ask why the check couldn't be cashed 4. Request a reissue or alternative payment method 5. Get a timeline for when you can expect the new payment 6. Ask if there's anything you need to do on your end Remember to stay calm and polite, even if it's frustrating. Document everything, including who you talked to and when. If they're not helpful, ask to speak to a supervisor. Don't hang up until you have a clear plan of action!

Ugh, I've been there before. It's so frustrating! Make sure you have all the details about the check ready when you call - like the date, amount, and any reference numbers. Also, be prepared to explain why you couldn't cash it. Good luck!

I had a similar issue a few months ago! The bank told me it was because there was a security feature on the check that their scanner couldn't read properly. When I called EDD, they were actually pretty helpful - they cancelled the old check and sent me a new one within about 10 business days. The key is to have your claim number ready and be specific about the error you got when trying to cash it. Also, ask them to put a note in your file about the issue in case it happens again. Hope this helps!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear that EDD was actually helpful when you called. I'm definitely going to have my claim number ready and write down the exact error message I got. Did you have to do anything special to get the new check, or did they just automatically send it once you explained the situation?

•This is super helpful! I'm dealing with the same thing right now. Did they ask you to send back the original check, or were you able to keep it? And when you say "security feature" - was it like a watermark or something that was causing the problem?
