EDD SDI payment shows 'qualification' in activity log - no debit card yet. What now?

So my husband's disability claim finally got approved after weeks of waiting (thank god), but we're stuck in another confusing situation. In his SDI Online account, the activity log shows a payment was issued on 4/15/2025 for the period 3/20-4/13, but next to it, it just says "qualification"? We're not sure what this means. We haven't received any EDD debit card in the mail yet. Is the payment on hold? Do we need to wait for the card to arrive? Should we go to an EDD office in person to figure this out? His doctor submitted all the paperwork correctly and the claim shows as approved, but we're really confused about how to actually access the money. This is his first time on disability and we're relying on these payments for rent next month. Has anyone seen "qualification" on their payment status before? What does this actually mean?

Qualification usually means they approved ur payment but it hasnt been sent out yet. they probably havent mailed the card yet give it a few more days. when mine got approved it took like 10 days after seeing that status to get the card

Thanks for the info! 10 days feels like forever when you're watching the bank account get lower. I guess we'll just have to be patient. Did your online status change before the card arrived?

The "qualification" status means the payment has been authorized but is still being processed. The first payment typically takes longer because they need to: 1. Verify all eligibility requirements are met 2. Set up the payment account in their system 3. Issue and mail the EDD debit card to you You should receive the Bank of America EDD debit card within 7-10 business days from when that status appeared. Once you have the card, all future payments will automatically be loaded onto it. They'll never tell you exactly when it's mailed, but I recommend calling Bank of America EDD customer service (number on the EDD website) after 5 business days if nothing arrives. They can confirm if a card was mailed and when.

This is right. Even after qualification it takes time. My sons card took 12 days to come in mail after he saw that qualification thing. then BAM! all his money was there ready to use

I went through this exact situation last month. "Qualification" is EDD's way of saying "we've qualified this payment for processing" - it's basically their internal approval step. You have two options: 1) Wait for the card (7-14 days typically for first-time claims) 2) If you need funds urgently, you can try reaching EDD to check the status and potentially expedite. Good luck getting through though - I spent 3 days calling non-stop and never reached anyone. I eventually found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD agent within 20 minutes. They have this system that waits on hold for you then calls when an agent is available. Saved me days of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd Once I spoke with an agent, they confirmed my card was being processed and gave me the exact timeline. Helped my anxiety tremendously knowing exactly what was happening.

Is that service legit? I'm always nervous about those third-party things for government benefits. Did they need a lot of personal info or anything? My husband's really worried about identity theft after his coworker had issues.

It's definitely legit - they don't ask for any sensitive info like SSN or claim details. They basically just connect you to EDD's phone system but skip the waiting. You still talk directly to an EDD rep, not to them. The peace of mind was worth it for me since I was stressing about rent.

This reminds me of when I was on pregancy disability last year and the EXACT same thing happened!!! called EDD like 50 times with no answer then gave up and suddenly card showed up in mail like 2 weeks later with NO notification. system is BROKEN but money comes eventually 🙄 just hate how they leave us hanging with no info when we depend on this $$$

So frustrating! Did you do anything special to make it arrive, or literally just wait? I feel like we're in limbo right now.

The BofA EDD card system is THE WORST part of the entire disability process. "Qualification" means your payment is approved but not yet transferred to Bank of America for loading onto your card. Here's what most people don't know: 1. There's a *separate* timeline for EDD approving payment vs. BofA processing the card 2. EDD doesn't tell BofA to mail your card until the FIRST PAYMENT is fully processed 3. BofA takes 7-10 business days (often longer) to mail the card after EDD tells them to 4. If your mailing address has ANY tiny discrepancy, the card can be delayed or returned Pro tip: Once you get your card, IMMEDIATELY set up direct deposit to your personal bank account through the BofA EDD card website. That way future payments skip the debit card entirely. I learned this the hard way after my card was lost in the mail TWICE.

•

Thank you for all this detailed info! I had no idea the process was this complicated. Will definitely set up direct deposit as soon as we get the card. I'm wondering if we can call Bank of America directly or if that would just confuse things more?

You can absolutely call BofA's EDD card department directly at 1-866-692-9374. They have a specific department just for EDD cards. They can tell you if a card has been ordered, when it was mailed, and even expedite a replacement if needed (though they can't expedite the initial card). Their customer service is actually WAY better than EDD's in my experience.

0 coins

WAIT DON'T PANIC this happened to me too!!! The qualification thing is normal. BofA sends the card separately from EDD and they don't talk to each other AT ALL. my card came exactly 8 days after my claim showed qualified but my neighbor got his in 5 days so its random. once you get the card you can call the number on it and check if theres already money on it. sometimes the money is there before they even tell you lol. also check ALL your mail carefully because the card comes in a very plain envelope that looks like junk mail. my husband almost threw ours away!!

•

Omg thank you for the warning about the envelope! I'll make sure we check everything carefully. It's crazy how they don't make the envelope look more official considering how important it is.

My disability was different from your husband's situation because mine was for pregnancy, but I had a similar payment issue. I was going CRAZY waiting for that stupid card. When I finally got through to someone at EDD after like 50 calls (seriously), they told me there was a verification flag on my account even though the payment showed as qualified. If you don't get the card within 10 business days, there might be something else going on beyond just waiting for the mail. BTW, make sure your address is EXACTLY the same in both the EDD system and what your doctor submitted. My doctor's office had my old apartment number and that caused a whole mess.

Aisha Hussain

•

That's a really good point about the address! I'll have my husband double-check with his doctor's office. They're usually good about paperwork but mistakes happen. Hoping it's just normal processing time and not a verification issue.

Just to add to my previous comment - since this is your husband's first disability claim, keep in mind that the first payment often includes multiple weeks of benefits if he had to serve the standard 7-day waiting period. The amount should reflect all qualified weeks minus that waiting period. When the card arrives, I highly recommend setting up alerts for all transactions and checking the balance regularly. If any future payments show as "qualified" but don't appear on the card within 2-3 days, that's when you should contact EDD directly. Also, keep track of your husband's certification periods. Even though his claim is approved, he'll need to complete ongoing certifications if his disability continues beyond the initial approved period.

0 coins

Aisha Hussain

•

Thank you for this additional information! Yes, his doctor certified him for 8 weeks initially, so we're expecting the first payment to cover about 3 weeks after the waiting period. We'll definitely set up all the alerts once we get the card. The certification process is still a bit confusing to me - does he get notifications when it's time to certify again?

0 coins

Ethan Brown

•

Yes, he should receive an email notification when it's time to certify again, but the system isn't always reliable with these notices. I recommend marking the certification dates on your calendar based on his claim start date. Typically, he'll need to certify every 2 weeks, but SDI can sometimes be set up with different intervals depending on the medical condition and doctor's recommendation. He can always log into his SDI Online account and check the "Certification Section" to see when the next certification is due. Missing certifications can cause payment delays, so it's good to stay on top of these dates independently of any notifications.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My SDI claim was approved last week and I see "qualification" in my activity log too. It's so stressful not knowing when the money will actually be accessible, especially when bills are due soon. From reading everyone's responses here, it sounds like we just have to wait it out for the card to arrive. I've been checking the mail obsessively every day since I saw that status appear. It's frustrating that EDD doesn't give you any timeline or tracking info - like, just tell us "your card will arrive in X days" instead of leaving us guessing! I'm definitely going to sign up for USPS Informed Delivery like someone mentioned, and I'll make sure to check every piece of mail carefully. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it helps to know this is normal even though the waiting is awful when you need the money.

Hey! I'm dealing with something similar right now - my claim got approved but I'm seeing different language in my activity log. Reading through everyone's responses here is really helpful though! One thing I wanted to add that might help you and your husband: if you have a Bank of America branch nearby, you can actually go in person once your card arrives and they can help you set up the direct deposit transfer immediately. I did this with my unemployment card last year and it was way faster than trying to do it online. The staff there are familiar with EDD cards and can walk you through the whole process. Also, I've heard that if you call the BofA EDD number (1-866-692-9374) that someone mentioned, they can sometimes tell you if a card has been ordered for your Social Security number even before it ships. Might be worth trying if you want some peace of mind about the timeline. Hope your card arrives soon! The waiting is definitely the worst part of this whole process.

That's a great tip about going to the BofA branch in person! I hadn't thought of that but it makes total sense - dealing with a real person would probably be so much less stressful than trying to navigate their website. We actually have a branch about 15 minutes from our house, so that's definitely something we'll do once the card arrives. I'm going to try calling that BofA number you mentioned too. Even if they can't expedite anything, just knowing that a card has been ordered would help with my anxiety. It's been 6 days since we saw the "qualification" status, so hopefully we're getting close to the 7-10 day window everyone keeps mentioning. Thanks for the encouragement - you're right that the waiting is absolutely the worst part! At least knowing this is normal helps a bit.

I'm new to this community but going through something similar right now with my mom's SDI claim. She's been waiting 3 weeks since her "qualification" status appeared and still no card! Reading through all these responses is making me feel a bit better that this is apparently normal, even though it's incredibly frustrating. One thing I wanted to ask - has anyone had experience with what happens if the card gets lost in the mail? My mom is really worried about that since our mail delivery has been unreliable lately. We had a package go missing just last month. Should we be proactive about requesting a replacement if it doesn't show up within a certain timeframe, or does that just complicate things more? Also, for those who mentioned calling Bank of America directly - do they ask for any verification info when you call to check on card status? My mom is always hesitant to give out personal info over the phone but if it's legit it might be worth trying. Thanks to everyone sharing their experiences here. It's such a relief to find people who understand how stressful this whole process is when you're depending on these payments!

Hey Lucas! I'm new here too but dealing with a similar situation. For your mom's card being "lost" - 3 weeks does seem really long compared to what others are saying. Most people here got theirs within 7-14 days. I'd definitely call that Bank of America EDD number (1-866-692-9374) that people mentioned to check if a card was actually mailed. When you call BofA for EDD card stuff, they'll typically ask for the last 4 digits of her SSN and maybe her date of birth - standard verification stuff, not anything sketchy. If the card really did get lost in mail, they can issue a replacement, but you want to make sure one was actually sent first before requesting a replacement. Also agree with everyone else that this whole system is so unnecessarily stressful when people are already dealing with medical issues! Hope your mom gets her card soon.

I'm dealing with this exact same situation right now! My disability claim was approved 5 days ago and I see "qualification" in my activity log too. Reading everyone's experiences here is so reassuring - I was starting to panic that something was wrong. The most helpful thing I've learned from this thread is that Bank of America number (1-866-692-9374) that several people mentioned. I called them yesterday and they confirmed a card was ordered for me on the same day my payment showed "qualified" status. The rep said it typically takes 7-10 business days from when they mail it, so I'm hoping to see it by early next week. What's really frustrating is how EDD gives you absolutely no communication about this process. Like, would it kill them to send an email saying "Your payment is approved, debit card will arrive in 7-10 days"? Instead we're all here trying to decode what "qualification" means! Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and tips. This community is a lifesaver when you're navigating this confusing system for the first time.

Yes! That BofA number is such a game changer - I wish EDD would actually tell people about it instead of leaving us all in the dark. It's crazy how much anxiety could be avoided with just basic communication about timelines. I'm glad you got confirmation that your card was ordered! That peace of mind is worth everything when you're sitting there wondering if something went wrong. Hopefully yours arrives right on schedule next week. You're so right about EDD's communication being terrible. Even something as simple as "Your payment has been approved and your debit card is being processed" would help so much. Instead we get mysterious status words like "qualification" that mean nothing to normal people!

I just signed up for it yesterday after reading the suggestion here. It's free and might help catch that plain envelope that apparently looks like junk mail. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and timelines. This whole process is stressful enough without EDD's terrible communication, but at least we have this community to help each other figure it out!

Such a simple thing but it'll definitely help with the anxiety of waiting and watching for that plain envelope. I can't believe they don't make it look more official considering how important it is! It's amazing how much this community has helped me understand what's actually happening. Thanks for sharing your experience and that phone confirmation tip!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who went through this exact same thing about 6 months ago! The "qualification" status is definitely normal and just means your payment has been approved internally by EDD but hasn't been transferred to Bank of America yet for the debit card. I was in the same boat - stressing about rent while waiting for that card to show up. Mine took exactly 9 business days from when I first saw "qualification" to when the card arrived. The hardest part is that EDD gives you zero communication about what's happening or when to expect anything. A couple things that helped me: - Called Bank of America EDD line at 1-866-692-9374 around day 5 to confirm the card was actually ordered and get a timeline - Set up USPS Informed Delivery so I could see mail coming before it arrived - Checked EVERY piece of mail carefully since the card really does come in a super plain envelope The waiting is awful when you need the money, but it sounds like your husband's claim is processing normally. Once that card arrives, the relief is huge and future payments load automatically. Hang in there - you're almost through the hardest part!

And yes, you're absolutely right about EDD's communication being terrible - it would be so simple for them to just explain what these status updates actually mean instead of leaving everyone guessing. I've got USPS Informed Delivery set up now too and I'm checking every single piece of mail like it's treasure hunt. It's crazy that such an important document comes in such a plain envelope! Thanks for the encouragement - knowing we're "almost through the hardest part" really helps. This whole disability process has been such a learning experience and this community has been invaluable for figuring out what's normal vs when to worry.

I'm so glad I found this thread too! I'm completely new to the SDI process and was getting really worried about that "qualification" status. Just wanted to add my experience since I went through this exact same thing about 2 months ago! The "qualification" status is totally normal - it basically means EDD has approved your payment but it's still in their processing queue before getting sent to Bank of America for the debit card. Mine took 11 days from seeing "qualification" to actually getting the card in the mail. I was checking the mailbox like a maniac every single day! The card really does come in the most boring, plain white envelope that looks like it could be anything. One thing I wish someone had told me - once you get the card, call the activation number immediately and check your balance. Sometimes there's a delay between when the card arrives and when the money actually gets loaded onto it. My first payment was there right away, but I've heard of people having to wait an extra day or two for the funds to show up even after activating the card. Also, definitely set up that direct deposit transfer to your regular bank account as soon as possible. The EDD debit card system is clunky and having future payments go straight to your normal bank is so much less stressful. You can do it online through the Bank of America EDD website once you have your card. Hang in there - the waiting is absolutely awful but it sounds like everything is processing normally for your husband! You should have that card within the next few days.

Thanks for sharing your timeline and all those helpful tips! 11 days is a bit longer than some others have mentioned but still within that normal range everyone keeps talking about. I'm definitely going to check the balance right after activating the card - I hadn't thought about there potentially being a delay between activation and funds being available. The direct deposit tip is really valuable too. I keep seeing people mention setting that up ASAP once you get the card, and it makes total sense to avoid having to deal with the debit card system for future payments. One less thing to stress about! It's so helpful hearing from people who've been through this recently. Even though the waiting is torture when you need the money, knowing that 11 days was normal for you and everything worked out gives me hope. We're on day 7 now so hopefully we're getting close. Thanks for the encouragement!

I'm currently going through this exact same situation with my wife's SDI claim! We just saw "qualification" appear in her activity log 4 days ago and I've been frantically googling what it means ever since. This thread is such a huge relief - I was starting to think something was wrong with her claim. After reading everyone's experiences here, I immediately called that Bank of America EDD number (1-866-692-9374) that so many people recommended. They were super helpful and confirmed a card was ordered for her on Tuesday, with expected delivery in 7-10 business days. WAY better customer service than trying to get through to EDD! I also just signed up for USPS Informed Delivery after seeing it mentioned multiple times here. Hopefully that'll help me catch the card when it's coming since everyone says it looks like junk mail. What really frustrates me is how EDD leaves everyone completely in the dark about their own process. Like, would it kill them to add one sentence explaining what "qualification" actually means? I'm so sorry you and your wife are dealing with this stress on top of her back injury! It's really tough when you're already managing a medical situation and then have to navigate EDD's confusing system without any clear guidance. I'm glad you found that Bank of America number helpful - it seems like they're consistently more informative than EDD's own customer service. 4 days in and already having confirmation that her card was ordered is really good! Based on everyone's timelines here, you should hopefully see it arrive sometime next week. The USPS Informed Delivery is such a smart move. I wish I had known about that service earlier - it would have saved me so much anxious mail-checking! And you're absolutely right about EDD's communication being terrible. When people are already dealing with disabilities and financial stress, the least they could do is explain what their status updates actually mean.
