EDD SDI payment for partial week after returning to work?

I've been trying to figure out how partial week payments work with EDD SDI. I received my disability payment on March 2nd, 2025, but ended up returning to work earlier than expected on March 8th. Do I still get paid for those days between March 2-8th? Or is my payment prorated somehow? I called EDD three times but keep getting disconnected after waiting 2+ hours each time. Has anyone dealt with partial week payments after returning to work? I need to budget carefully since I was on reduced income during my disability period.

same thing hapenned to me back in january! they DO pay you for partial weeks but its prorated by the day. so if you went back to work on 3/8, you should get paid for 3/2 through 3/7. They'll calculate it as 6/7 of your weekly benefit amount. make sure u report your return to work date correctly on ur certification form!!

Thanks, that's really helpful! I already submitted my final certification and indicated 3/8 as my return date. So I should see the prorated amount for those 6 days then? Any idea how long it typically takes for that final payment to process?

According to EDD guidelines, you're entitled to benefits for each day you were unable to work due to your disability. Since you returned on March 8th, you should receive payment for March 2nd through March 7th (6 days). The payment will be calculated as 6/7 of your weekly benefit amount. Make sure your doctor has certified through at least March 7th or you might have issues with that final payment.

My doctor only certified through March 5th but I didn't return until March 10th. Does that mean I lose out on 5 days of benefits? The EDD system is so confusing!

Yes, unfortunately if your doctor only certified through March 5th, you would only receive payment through that date, regardless of when you actually returned to work. You should contact your doctor immediately to see if they can submit an amended certification covering through your actual return-to-work date.

Just want to add my experience - I returned to work mid-week last year and they DID pay me for the partial week, but it took almost 3 weeks longer than my regular payments to show up. Something about partial weeks seems to trigger extra review or something.

3 weeks?! That's so frustrating. I was hoping to get that money soon since I'm still catching up on bills from being on reduced income. Did you have to call them to follow up or did it just eventually appear in your account?

It just showed up eventually. I did call twice but couldn't get through to anyone. The system is so overloaded its ridiculous.

If you're having trouble reaching EDD, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was in the same situation last month trying to get answers about my partial week payment. Used their service and they connected me with an EDD rep in about 25 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours or getting disconnected. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Totally worth it to get my payment questions sorted out quickly.

Yes, it really works! The system calls EDD for you and navigates their phone tree automatically. When they finally get through to a rep, you get connected. Saved me hours of frustration and helped me get my payment issue resolved.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CHEAT US!! I bet they're hoping you don't notice that they owe you for those days. Last year they "forgot" to pay me for 3 days when I went back to work and I had to FIGHT for weeks to get my money!! Make sure you document EVERYTHING and check your payment history carefully!!

While there can certainly be delays and system issues with EDD payments, the partial week payment system is actually automatic once the return to work date is entered correctly. It's not designed to cheat claimants - most issues come from processing delays or incorrect certifications rather than intentional withholding of benefits.

WRONG!! My cousin works at the EDD office and they ABSOLUTELY have quotas for denying claims and delaying payments!! They specifically target partial week payments because most people don't notice or don't think it's worth fighting over a few days of benefits!!

make sure your final certifiaction form (the DE 2500A) has the correct return-to-work date and u should be fine. just be prepared to wait a lil longer for that last payment. mine took about 10 days longer than my regular payments.

Thanks for the advice. I double-checked and my form does have 3/8 as my return date. Sounds like I just need to be patient for that final payment to process. At least now I know what to expect!

i had surgery in october and my payment situation was a complete mess. they paid me for some days, not others, then sent an overpayment notice?? took months to sort out. good luck lol

Oh no, that sounds awful! Did you ever get it resolved correctly? I'm worried about getting hit with an overpayment notice too.

Yeah eventually got it sorted but it took like 4 months and multiple appeals. The overpayment was because they counted some days twice in their system - total nightmare. Just keep all your paperwork and document everything. If you get any weird notices don't panic, just appeal immediately.

I went through something similar last month! You should definitely get paid for March 2-7 since those were days you were still disabled before returning to work. The payment will be prorated at 6/7 of your weekly benefit amount. From my experience, it took about 2 weeks for the partial week payment to show up after I submitted my final certification - longer than regular payments but it did come through. Make sure you keep checking your payment history online and don't worry if it seems delayed, that's normal for partial weeks according to what I've seen in this community.
