Will EDD SDI payments continue right up to my return-to-work date?

I've been on disability since July and my doctor just certified my expect-to-work date for tomorrow (9/29). Does anyone know if I'll still receive my full benefit amount for the days leading up to my return date? The EDD website isn't super clear about this, and I'm trying to budget. Do they prorate the final payment or cut it off early? Really don't want any surprises with my final payment since I won't get my first paycheck for another 2 weeks after returning!

Yes, you'll get paid all the way up until your return to work date. EDD SDI will pay you for every day of your disability including the last day before you return to work. So if your return date is 9/29, you'll be paid through 9/28. They'll prorate your final payment based on the number of days in that last certification period.

Thank you! That's a relief. So they'll basically pay me right up to the day before I go back, which makes sense. Appreciate the clarification!

Oh! I didn't even think about that. So I need to submit one final certification even if it's just for a partial period? Good to know!

THE SYSTEM IS SO STUPID!!!! I returned to work in April and EDD kept paying me for TWO WEEKS after my return date even though my doctor put the correct date on forms. Then FOUR MONTHS LATER they send me an OVERPAYMENT NOTICE for $1,200!!!! Now I'm fighting with them about it because THEY made the mistake not me!!! Don't trust what anyone tells you - DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!!!

Omg that happened to my sister too! She had to appeal and it was such a mess. The whole system is broken.

To clarify what others have said: yes, you'll be paid through your last day of disability (the day before your return-to-work date). For your situation, since you're returning on 9/29, your last payable day would be 9/28. Important things to remember: 1. You MUST submit your final certification for that partial period 2. Don't certify for any days on or after your return date (that would be fraud) 3. Your payment will be prorated based on the daily benefit amount 4. There might be a slight delay with your final payment as it sometimes triggers a review Also, if you have trouble reaching EDD to confirm everything is processed correctly, I found a service called Claimyr that connects you directly to an EDD agent without the endless busy signals. Saved me hours of frustration when finalizing my claim. Check out their demo: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd or their website claimyr.com. Much better than calling for days straight and getting nowhere.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll make sure to submit that final certification. And thanks for the tip about Claimyr - I might need that if there are any issues with my final payment. I've tried calling EDD before and it's been a nightmare.

Just remember that if you work even PART of a day, that counts as working and you can't claim benefits for that day. So if you go back on the 29th even for just an hour of orientation or something, that's considered your first working day and the 28th is your last payable day.

That's good to know - my boss actually asked if I could come in for a half day on my return date, but now I realize that would affect my benefits. I'll make sure to be clear about my first full day back.

When I went back to work after my pregnancy disability, I had this exact same question! Yes, they pay you right up to the day before. In my case, my return date was on a Monday, and I got paid through Sunday. But here's what confused me - my final payment was less than I expected because of how they calculate the weekly benefit amount. They take your total benefit amount and divide by 7 to get a daily rate, then multiply by however many days you're claiming in that final period. So if you're only claiming 3 days in your final week, you'll get 3/7 of your weekly amount. Also, I had to call them to make sure everything processed correctly and spent THREE DAYS trying to get through before I finally reached someone. The phone system is absolutely brutal.

One final tip I forgot to mention: print or save a PDF of your payment history from your SDI Online account before your claim closes. Sometimes after a claim is fully processed and closed, it becomes harder to access your full payment history, and you might need that for tax purposes next year.

Thanks for the tip! I wouldn't have thought to do that. I'll definitely save all my payment documents before the claim closes.

Just wanted to add my experience - I went through this exact situation last month! Yes, you'll get paid right up to your last day of disability (September 28th in your case). The key thing is making sure you submit that final certification correctly and don't accidentally certify for any days after you return to work. One thing that helped me was setting a reminder to check my EDD account a few days after submitting my final certification to make sure the payment processed correctly. Sometimes there can be delays with partial payments, and it's better to catch any issues early rather than waiting weeks to find out something went wrong. Also, since you mentioned budgeting - your final payment might arrive a day or two later than your usual payment schedule since partial certifications sometimes take a bit longer to process. Just something to keep in mind for your planning! Good luck with your return to work tomorrow!

This is really helpful advice! I appreciate you sharing your recent experience with the same situation. Setting a reminder to check my account after submitting the final certification is a great idea - I definitely don't want to wait weeks only to find out there was an issue. And good point about the potential delay in the final payment, I'll factor that into my budget planning. Thanks for the well wishes on my return to work!

Hey Javier! I went through this exact same situation about 6 months ago when I returned from my disability leave. You'll definitely get paid through September 28th (the day before your return date). The system is designed to pay you for every day you're certified as disabled, right up until you go back to work. A couple of things that might help with your budgeting: - Your final payment will be prorated based on how many days you're claiming in that final certification period - The payment might take 1-2 extra days to process since it's a partial certification - Make absolutely sure you DON'T certify for September 29th or any days after - that would create an overpayment situation I'd also recommend taking screenshots of your final certification submission and keeping records of your doctor's return-to-work date documentation, just in case there are any questions later. The transition back to work is stressful enough without worrying about benefit payments! Congratulations on your recovery and return to work tomorrow! 🎉

Thanks Vincent! This is exactly the kind of detailed info I was hoping for. I really appreciate you sharing your experience from 6 months ago - it's reassuring to hear from someone who went through the same thing recently. Taking screenshots of the final certification is a smart idea, I wouldn't have thought of that. And you're absolutely right about not certifying for the 29th - I'll be extra careful about that since I've seen horror stories about overpayment notices. Thanks for the congratulations too! I'm nervous but excited to get back to work after being out since July.
