EDD SDI payment until return to work date - will I get paid for remaining days before RTW?
I'm totally confused about how EDD pays for those final days before returning to work. My disability period was approved through April 12th (that's my official return-to-work date on my doctor's certification), but I just got what seems like my final payment on April 4th. Does SDI actually pay me up until the very last day before I return to work? Or am I just out those 8 days of benefits? I'm trying to budget and figure out if I need to dip into savings or if I'll get one more smaller payment for April 5-11. I can't afford to lose a week of benefits that I thought I'd be getting! My weekly benefit amount is $1,245 so we're talking about almost $1,500 I might be missing. Has anyone dealt with this before? Do I need to call EDD to make sure they process those last days?

•Thanks! Do you remember how many days it took to get that final partial payment? I'm just nervous because my bills are due soon.

Yes, EDD SDI benefits should cover you through your last day of disability, which would be April 11th if your Return to Work (RTW) date is April 12th. The payments are processed in two-week increments generally, so what likely happened is that your payment on 4/4 covered a previous period, and you should receive one more payment for the remaining days. The system automatically calculates this based on your physician's certification end date. You don't need to do anything special for those final days as long as your doctor certified through 4/12. The final payment will be prorated for those remaining days.

•That's a huge relief! So I should just wait for that final payment to come through? Do you know roughly how long after my return-to-work date I might see that payment?

OMG this LITERALLY just happened to me last month!!!! I was so stressed thinking I wasn't getting paid for my last 5 days but then a smaller payment showed up about 10 days after my last day of disability. EDD is SO SLOW with everything. Like why can't they just pay us properly on time??? So frustrating!!

•The system is designed to prevent overpayments. Since disability benefits are calculated on a daily basis, EDD needs to ensure the claimant didn't return to work earlier than certified. That's why there's often a slight delay with that final payment - they're verifying you didn't go back early.

When I was on SDI last year for my shoulder surgery I thought I wasn't getting paid for the last few days too but it came like 2 weeks later. Not sure why it takes so long but it did come eventually

If you're concerned about the timing, I'd recommend trying to reach an EDD representative to confirm the status of your final payment. Many people struggle with getting through on the phones, but I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an EDD rep in about 20 minutes instead of spending days trying to get through. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep I spoke with was able to tell me exactly when my final payment would be processed and the exact amount. Gave me peace of mind since I was also worried about bills.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might try that if I don't see the payment by the end of next week. It would be worth it just to know for sure what's happening with my final payment.

I hate how they make this so confusing!!!! When I was on disability for my pregnancy, I had to call like 5 times because the payments were all messed up and nobody could explain to me how the system works. different rep told me different things every time i called. total disaster.

•The confusion often happens because there's a difference between SDI for pregnancy/medical conditions and Paid Family Leave (PFL) which some people use after pregnancy. They're separate programs with different payment schedules and certification requirements, which is why you might have gotten different answers depending on which part of your claim the rep was looking at.

To clarify how the SDI payment system works for end dates: your doctor certified you through April 12th as your return-to-work date, which means your last day of disability is April 11th. Your benefit period covers through April 11th, and you should receive payment for every eligible day up to that date. SDI payments are usually processed on a biweekly schedule, so if your last full payment was on April 4th, it likely covered days up until that point. You should receive one more payment for April 5-11 (7 days). This would be calculated as: (your weekly benefit amount ÷ 7) × 7 days. The final payment typically processes 5-10 business days after your benefit period ends. So I would expect to see that payment around April 19-24, 2025. If you don't receive it by then, that's when I would contact EDD for clarification.

•Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! This makes perfect sense now. I'll keep an eye out for that final payment around the dates you mentioned.

my brother was on disability and they didnt pay him for the last days and he called and they said he had to file some special form for partial weeks but i dont remember what it was called maybe someone else knows?

•There's no special form needed for partial weeks at the end of a claim. The system automatically calculates this based on the physician's certification end date. Your brother might have been dealing with a different situation - perhaps he was trying to claim partial weeks while working part-time, which does require a different process.

one thing to watch for is making sure ur doctor put the correct return to work date on the form. my dr made a mistake and put the wrong date which caused major problems with my final payment

•That's a good point! I'll double-check my paperwork to make sure the dates match what my doctor told me verbally. Thanks for the heads up!

I went through this exact same situation a few months ago and can confirm what others are saying - you WILL get paid for those remaining days! My disability ended on a Wednesday and my final payment came about 8 days later for the partial week. The key thing is that EDD pays you through the day BEFORE your return-to-work date, so if you're returning April 12th, you should get paid through April 11th. The delay happens because they have to process the final certification and make sure everything matches up with your doctor's paperwork. Don't panic if it takes a week or two longer than expected - that's totally normal for the final payment. Just budget accordingly knowing it's coming but might be delayed a bit.

I'm in a similar situation right now - my disability period ends next week and I was worried about the same thing! Reading through everyone's responses here is so helpful. It sounds like the consensus is that we DO get paid for those final days, but there's often a delay of 1-2 weeks after our return-to-work date before that final payment shows up. I'm going to take the advice about double-checking that my doctor put the correct return-to-work date on the certification form. That seems like something that could easily cause problems if there's a mismatch. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's reassuring to know this is normal and the payment will come through eventually!

•This thread has been so helpful! I'm actually starting my SDI claim next week and was wondering about exactly this situation. It's good to know upfront that there might be a delay with the final payment so I can plan my budget accordingly. @Carmen Ruiz - when you say budget "accordingly, do" you mean just assume the final payment will be delayed, or did you find any strategies to manage the cash flow gap during that waiting period?
