EDD SDI direct deposit delay - when will payment actually hit my bank?
After fighting with EDD for what felt like forever, my SDI claim was finally processed and I got my first payment issued this past Friday (showed as 'paid' on the EDD website). I signed up for the new direct deposit system they implemented in 2025, but the money still hasn't shown up in my checking account. This is my first time on disability and I'm starting to get anxious because rent is coming up. My doctor has me off work for at least another 6 weeks due to my back surgery, so I REALLY need this money to come through. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for the direct deposit to actually hit your bank account after EDD shows it as 'paid'? Is there some kind of waiting period with the new direct deposit system? I've tried calling but you know how that goes... 🙄

mine usually takes 1-2 days after it shows paid. sometimes shows up same day if it's processed early enough. depends on ur bank too. some banks hold it longer.

•Thanks! I'm with Chase. Hoping it shows up tomorrow then. Just getting nervous because I've never done this before.

The new direct deposit system implemented in January 2025 generally takes 1-3 business days after the payment shows as 'paid' on the EDD website. Remember that weekends don't count as business days, so if your payment was issued on Friday, it might not show up until Monday or Tuesday. Some banks process faster than others. Also, for first-time payments, there's sometimes an additional verification step that can add an extra day. Monitor your account through Tuesday, and if you don't see it by Wednesday morning, there might be an issue worth looking into.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I'll try to be patient through Tuesday. Just stressful waiting when bills are due!

My sister had the EXACT same problem last month!!! She waited 5 days and nothing showed up, then she called her bank and they said they never got anything from EDD. Turned out she had made a typo in her account number when she signed up for direct deposit. Check your account info on the EDD portal ASAP!!!

•Oh no! That's scary! Just double-checked my account number on the portal and it looks correct. I triple-checked when I entered it, but good call on verifying again.

When I was on SDI last year after my knee surgery the payments were so inconsistent. Sometimes 1 day, sometimes 4 days, one time it took a whole week! The EDD is a total mess. I swear they do this on purpose just to stress us out when we're already dealing with health issues. The whole system needs to be rebuilt from scratch!

I'm actually going through this right now too! My first payment was issued last Thursday and it hit my bank account (Wells Fargo) Monday morning. I think there's definitely a different timeline for the first payment versus subsequent ones. The EDD website says the new direct deposit system should be faster than the old one, but the first payment often has additional verification steps. Hang in there!

•That's really reassuring to hear it worked for you! I'm hoping mine shows up tomorrow then. Just the waiting is killing me!

I work with disability claims and can share some insight. With the new direct deposit system (implemented January 2025), first payments typically take 2-3 business days. If you're seeing 'paid' status on Friday, expect it Tuesday at the latest. Here's what affects timing: 1. First payments undergo additional verification 2. Transactions initiated after 2pm don't start processing until next business day 3. Your bank's own processing time varies If Wednesday comes and you still don't have it, you'll need to contact EDD. I recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent quickly. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Much better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected repeatedly.

•Is this claimyr thing legit? Seems sketchy to pay someone just to make a phone call for me...

•Yes, it's legitimate. I was skeptical too, but it worked for me when I needed to resolve an issue with my husband's claim. They don't make the call for you - they hold your place in line and connect you directly with EDD when an agent is available. But hopefully you won't need it if your deposit arrives as expected in the next day or two.

UPDATE: The payment just hit my account this morning (Tuesday)! So that was 2 business days after it showed 'paid' on the EDD website. Thanks everyone for your help and reassurance. One less thing to stress about during recovery!

For everyone seeing this thread later - i've been on SDI since February (long term treatment) and now my payments are super consistent. First one took 3 days to hit my account but all the others come exactly 2 days after showing as paid. So it DOES get more predictable!!!

Does anyone know if this is the same for disability payments related to pregnancy? I'm due in August and trying to get all my ducks in a row before the baby comes!!

•Yes, the payment processing timeframes are the same whether you're on disability for pregnancy, surgery recovery, or any other medical condition. The direct deposit timing is based on the payment system, not the type of claim. Make sure you have your doctor submit your claim about 1-2 weeks before your planned leave date for pregnancy disability.

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone who finds this thread later - I'm currently on SDI for anxiety/depression and my payments have been pretty consistent with the new direct deposit system. First payment took 3 business days, but now they typically hit my account within 1-2 days after showing "paid" on the portal. The key thing I learned is to make sure you check your payment status on the EDD website first thing Monday morning if you're expecting a payment - they seem to process a lot of them over the weekend and early Monday. Also, if you're struggling financially while waiting for payments, some banks offer emergency advances on pending direct deposits if you can show proof of the incoming payment. Hope this helps someone!

•Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know about checking the portal Monday mornings. I didn't know some banks offer advances on pending deposits - that's a great tip for people in tight financial spots while waiting. The consistency after the first payment seems to be what everyone is experiencing with the new system.

I've been on SDI for the past 4 months after a work injury and wanted to share what I've learned about the timing. The new direct deposit system is definitely more reliable than the old debit card system they used to have. For me, payments consistently arrive 1-2 business days after showing "paid" on the portal. The first payment did take 3 days though, which seems to be the norm based on everyone's experiences here. One thing that helped reduce my anxiety was setting up account alerts with my bank so I get a text immediately when any deposit hits. That way I'm not constantly checking my balance! Also, if you're ever in a pinch waiting for a payment, some credit unions are more flexible than big banks about working with you if you can show proof of the pending EDD payment.

•This is such valuable information, thank you for sharing! Setting up bank alerts is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that when I was waiting for my first payment. The anxiety of constantly checking your account balance is real when you're already dealing with health issues and financial stress. It's also good to know about credit unions being more flexible - that could really help people who are in between payments and facing urgent expenses. Your point about the new system being more reliable than the old debit card system gives me hope that EDD is actually making improvements, even if slowly!

I'm dealing with the same situation right now! My payment showed as "paid" yesterday (Monday) and I'm nervously waiting for it to hit my account. Reading through everyone's experiences here is so reassuring - it sounds like 1-3 business days is totally normal, especially for first payments. The stress of waiting when you're already dealing with health issues and can't work is no joke. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and tips! I'm going to set up those bank alerts that @Amina mentioned - that's such a smart idea to avoid constantly checking your balance.

•I totally understand that anxiety! I just went through the exact same thing a few weeks ago with my first SDI payment. The waiting is honestly the worst part, especially when you're already stressed about not being able to work. Based on everyone's experiences here, since your payment showed "paid" yesterday (Monday), you'll most likely see it in your account by Wednesday at the latest. The bank alerts are definitely a game changer - I set mine up after reading @Amina's suggestion and it saved me so much stress with my subsequent payments. Hang in there, you're almost through the hardest part of the wait!

I'm going through something similar right now - my first SDI payment was issued yesterday and I'm anxiously waiting for it to show up in my account. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful and reassuring! It's clear that 1-3 business days is the norm, with first payments often taking the full 3 days due to verification steps. The tip about setting up bank alerts is genius - I'm definitely doing that today so I don't drive myself crazy constantly checking my balance. It's tough enough dealing with being out of work for medical reasons without having to stress about when the money will actually arrive. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and advice - this community is such a lifesaver when navigating the EDD system!

•Welcome to the waiting game! I just went through this exact situation last month and I know how nerve-wracking it is. Based on everything I've seen here and my own experience, your payment should definitely arrive within the next 1-2 days since it was issued yesterday. The first payment really does seem to take the full 2-3 business days for everyone, but after that they get much more consistent. Those bank alerts are a total game-changer - I wish I'd known about that tip when I was constantly refreshing my banking app every hour! Hang in there, you're so close to having one less thing to worry about while you focus on your recovery.

I'm currently dealing with this exact situation! My SDI payment was marked as "paid" on Friday and I'm still waiting for it to hit my Bank of America account. Reading through everyone's experiences here is so reassuring - it really seems like the 2-3 business day timeline is standard for first payments with the new direct deposit system. I've been checking my account obsessively but I'm going to take the advice about setting up bank alerts instead. It's already stressful enough being out of work for medical reasons without having to worry about when the money will actually show up. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines - this thread is exactly what I needed to find today!

•I completely understand that anxiety! I went through the exact same thing when I was waiting for my first payment. Since yours was marked "paid" on Friday, you should definitely see it by tomorrow (Tuesday) at the latest based on everyone's experiences here. Bank of America usually processes these pretty quickly once they receive them from EDD. The bank alerts suggestion is brilliant - I set mine up after my first payment and it saved me so much stress with the subsequent ones. You're almost through the hardest part of the wait! Focus on your recovery and try not to check your account too obsessively (easier said than done, I know).

I'm in almost the exact same boat right now! My first SDI payment showed as "paid" this past Thursday and I'm still waiting for it to hit my Credit Union account. Been fighting with EDD for months to get my claim processed after a shoulder injury, and now the waiting for the actual money is driving me crazy. Reading everyone's experiences here is such a relief - sounds like 2-3 business days is totally normal for first payments. I'm definitely setting up those bank alerts that people mentioned so I can stop obsessively checking my balance every few hours. The financial stress on top of dealing with recovery is no joke. Thanks to everyone for sharing their timelines - this community really helps when you're navigating this confusing system for the first time!

•I totally feel your pain! I'm actually new to this community but going through something very similar right now. My first SDI payment was marked "paid" yesterday and I'm anxiously waiting too. It's so stressful when you're already dealing with an injury and can't work - the last thing you need is uncertainty about when the financial relief will actually arrive! Reading through this whole thread has been incredibly helpful though. It seems like Thursday to today (Tuesday) would put you right at that 3-business-day mark that everyone talks about for first payments. Fingers crossed both of our payments show up soon! I'm definitely taking everyone's advice about the bank alerts too - seems like a much better approach than constantly refreshing the banking app.
