Can I upload paper extension form to EDD SDI or must it be mailed? Doctor took forever!
I'm stressing out about my SDI extension paperwork! My doctor finally completed my supplemental certification form for extending my disability benefits (took him almost 2 weeks!), but he only does paper forms - refuses to do electronic submission. Now I'm holding this completed form and not sure what to do with it. There's no fax number listed on the form. Can I scan and upload it through SDI Online somehow, or do I HAVE to mail it? I'm worried about delays if I mail it, but also concerned that uploading might cause confusion in the system since it was originally sent to my doctor as a paper form. Has anyone dealt with paper extension forms recently? What's the fastest way to get this processed without messing up my claim?

•Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Did your benefits continue during those 9 days or did you have a gap while they processed it?

Actually, there IS a way to upload the paper form! Go to your SDI Online account, click on 'Contact EDD' at the bottom, then select 'Submit Question' from the dropdown menu. Choose 'State Disability Insurance' as the category, then attach your scanned form as a PDF or image file. Include your claim number in the subject line and explain that you're submitting a supplemental certification form for extension. I did this with my last claim in January and they processed it within 3 days. Just make sure you scan it clearly and all information is legible.

•Oh thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed to know. I'll scan it tonight and upload it following your instructions. Hopefully it processes quickly like yours did!

My doctor also only does paper forms (SO annoying!) and when I called EDD about this they told me to mail it to the PO Box on the form. But that was back in 2023 so maybe things changed?

•Things have definitely changed since 2023. EDD has been upgrading their systems and now accepts uploaded documents for most claim types. The PO Box method still works but it's much slower - can take up to 14 days for processing versus 2-5 days for electronic submission. The key is making sure you properly label it when you upload so it gets routed correctly.

I HATE how doctors still refuse to do electronic submissions!!! It's 2025 for crying out loud! My doctor made me wait 3 weeks for my initial paperwork and almost ruined my claim. The whole system is broken when we depend on dinosaur doctors who can't use computers. And then EDD penalizes US for THEIR delays!!! Anyone else been through this nightmare?

•Unfortunately, many medical providers still haven't adopted the electronic submission system for EDD forms. Some medical offices cite privacy concerns, others say they don't have staff trained on the system. It's frustrating but somewhat understandable from their perspective - they're already overloaded with different electronic systems for each insurance company. For now, the best approach is to stay on top of your doctor and be prepared with backup submission methods like the one mentioned above.

Make sure whatever you do you keep a copy of that form and proof that you submitted it! My husband's extension was "lost" twice and we had to resubmit. now i take pictures of everything before sending.

If you're struggling to get through to an EDD representative to confirm the best submission method, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It helped me get through to an actual EDD agent in about 20 minutes when I had issues with my extension paperwork. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The agent I spoke with confirmed I could submit my doctor's paper form through the Contact EDD portal as others have mentioned, and they even added notes to my claim to expect the uploaded document.

•I've been trying to call them for days! I'll check out that service if I can't get this upload method to work. Thanks for the suggestion!

One important thing to note: when you upload the form through the Contact EDD portal, you'll need to include some specific information in your message to make sure it gets processed correctly: 1. Your full name as it appears on your claim 2. Your EDD Customer Account Number (starts with 999) 3. The specific form name (DE 2525XX Supplemental Certification) 4. The date range this extension covers Without this information, your uploaded form might sit in their general inbox rather than getting attached to your specific claim file. I learned this from an EDD rep who helped me with my extension last month.

•This is super helpful! I'll make sure to include all that information when I upload. Thank you so much for these specific details.

Just to clarify what others have said: Yes, you can upload the paper form through the Contact EDD portal as mentioned above. However, according to EDD policy, they still prefer the original paper form to be mailed if it was initially issued as a paper document. The best practice is to do both - upload a scanned copy for faster processing AND mail the original to the address on the form. This creates redundancy in the system and helps avoid delays. Regarding processing times: uploaded documents typically begin processing within 1-3 business days, while mailed forms can take 7-10 business days just to be entered into the system. Your benefits should continue uninterrupted as long as the form is received before your current certification period ends.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! I think I'll do exactly that - upload it today and also mail the original tomorrow. Better safe than sorry with these benefits.
