Submitted EDD SDI paperwork in person - can I now upload online instead of waiting?
Super frustrated with the EDD disability claim process right now! I had issues with my internet connection last week so I decided to physically drop off my SDI application and doctor's certification at the local EDD office (big mistake apparently). The lady at the counter took my paperwork but warned me it would take 'some time' to process. Now I've finally got my internet working again and managed to figure out how to use the SDI Online system. My question is: can I just create an account and upload all the same documents again through the website? Or will that just mess everything up and create duplicate claims? I'm worried about delaying my benefits even more if I wait for them to manually process the paper forms I submitted. Has anyone dealt with this situation before? My disability period started April 2nd and I'm getting anxious about when payments might start.

I wouldnt upload the same documents again because it WILL create a duplicate claim in their system and thats gonna cause you even bigger headaches. Paper applications take 3-4 weeks to process vs online which is usually 10-14 days. Its annoying but just wait it out at this point.

•Ughhh 3-4 weeks?! That's so much longer than I expected. Do you know if there's any way to check the status of a paper application? I don't even have a claim number or anything.

I made this exact same mistake back in January! Whatever you do, DON'T submit another application online. It will definitely flag as a duplicate in their system and potentially freeze both claims while they investigate. Unfortunately, paper claims are processed at a snail's pace compared to online submissions.

•Same thing happened to my sister with her pregnancy disability. She did both paper and online submissions thinking it would speed things up and ended up delayed by over 6 weeks while they sorted out the mess. Just one submission is definitely the way to go!

You're right to be concerned, but I'd recommend against submitting duplicate applications. Here's what you can do instead: 1. Create your SDI Online account anyway - this will help you in the future 2. Call EDD to check on your paper application status (be prepared for a long wait) 3. Ask if they can link your paper application to your new online account 4. Request they make a note that you'll be doing future certifications online The paper application will take longer (about 2-3 weeks from receipt), but creating duplicates will definitely delay things further. Your doctor's certification is the most important part, and they already have that.

•Thank you for these detailed steps! I'll definitely create the online account. Do you know the best number to call? I've tried the main disability number but it's always busy or they hang up.

Sorry but this is EXACTLY why the EDD system is garbage. They make it nearly impossible to file online with all their glitches and verification steps, then punish you with slower processing if you use paper forms. Then they don't even give you a tracking number or receipt when you submit in person! Ridiculous system designed to frustrate people out of claiming benefits they're entitled to!!

•While the system definitely has its frustrations, there is a logic to why paper claims take longer - they require manual data entry into the same system that processes online claims. The pandemic overwhelmed their staffing, and they still haven't fully recovered. But I agree they should provide better tracking for paper submissions.

If you need to check your claim status, I highly recommend using Claimyr to get through to an EDD agent quickly. Regular calling means hours of busy signals and hangups, but with Claimyr.com they call EDD for you and connect you with an agent, usually within 10-15 minutes. Saved me days of frustration when I had a similar issue with my claim. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd

•Oh wow, I hadn't heard of this service before. I'll definitely check it out because I've been trying to call for three days straight with no luck. Thanks for the tip!

my cousin did the paper application too and it took almost 5 weeks to get approved!!!! the weird thing was she never got any kind of notification that they received it either. she just kept checking her mail everyday until finally the debit card showed up.

•This is unfortunately common with paper applications. For anyone reading this thread in the future: always keep copies of everything you submit to EDD, get a receipt if submitting in person, and consider using certified mail if mailing documents. The lack of tracking is a major drawback with paper submissions.

Update: I finally got through to EDD after using that Claimyr service (which worked surprisingly well) and they confirmed my paper application was received and is being processed. They said I should create an SDI Online account using the same personal information, and once my claim is processed, it will automatically show up in my online account. They also warned me not to submit anything else or it would create a duplicate claim. The agent said the current processing time for paper applications is about 18-20 business days. Thanks everyone for your help!

•That's great news! Glad you were able to get some clarity. The waiting is still frustrating but at least now you know your application is in the system and being processed. Make sure you check your online account regularly once it's set up!

Thanks for sharing that update! Really helpful to know that EDD confirmed you can create the online account with the same info and it will automatically link once processed. The 18-20 business day timeline is actually better than some of the other estimates people were giving. Definitely going to bookmark that Claimyr service too - seems like a game changer for actually getting through to speak with someone at EDD instead of getting stuck in phone tree hell.

•Absolutely agree about Claimyr being a game changer! I've been lurking in this community for a while and seeing all the horror stories about people spending entire days trying to get through on the phone. It's crazy that we need a third-party service to access our own government benefits, but I'm definitely saving that link for when I inevitably need to deal with EDD myself. Adrian's update is super reassuring too - at least there's a clear path forward even if you accidentally go the paper route first.

This whole thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm in a similar situation where I submitted my SDI paperwork through mail last week and have been panicking about the processing time. Adrian, thanks so much for sharing your update - it's reassuring to know that EDD confirmed the paper application timeline and that you can still create the online account. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service too since I've been dreading having to call EDD. It's frustrating that the system works this way, but at least now I know what to expect and that there IS a way to get answers if you know the right tools to use. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here!

•So glad this thread could help you out! It's really reassuring to see how supportive this community is - everyone sharing their experiences and solutions instead of just complaining (though the complaints about EDD are totally valid lol). The fact that Adrian got such clear guidance from EDD after using Claimyr gives me hope that there are ways to navigate this system if you know the right approach. Definitely going to keep this thread bookmarked for future reference since it seems like dealing with EDD is unfortunately an ongoing reality for a lot of us. Good luck with your claim processing!

This is such valuable information for anyone who finds themselves in this situation! I'm dealing with a similar issue where I submitted my paperwork in person about 2 weeks ago and have been anxiously waiting. Adrian's update about the 18-20 business day timeline actually gives me some peace of mind - I was expecting it to be much longer based on some of the horror stories I've heard. The tip about creating the SDI Online account with the same personal info so it automatically links once processed is brilliant. I had no idea that was even possible! And honestly, the fact that Claimyr worked so well to get through to an actual EDD representative is incredible. I've been putting off calling because I've heard it can take hours or even days to get through, but knowing there's a service that can do it for you in 10-15 minutes changes everything. Thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread - it's exactly the kind of real-world guidance that you can't get from the official EDD website. Definitely bookmarking this for future reference!

•This thread has been an absolute lifesaver! I'm a newcomer here and was literally about to make the same mistake Adrian originally worried about - submitting duplicate applications thinking it would speed things up. The collective wisdom here just saved me weeks of potential delays. It's amazing how helpful everyone has been with sharing real experiences and practical solutions. The Claimyr tip alone is worth its weight in gold - I had no idea there were services like that to help navigate the EDD phone maze. Really grateful for communities like this where people actually help each other instead of just venting (though the venting about EDD is totally justified!). Thanks everyone for sharing your knowledge!

As someone new to this community, I just want to say how incredibly helpful this entire thread has been! I'm currently dealing with my first SDI claim and was completely overwhelmed by the process until I found this discussion. Adrian's original question is exactly what I was wondering about, and the collective advice from everyone here has been invaluable. The key takeaways that really stood out to me: 1. Never submit duplicate applications - it will create more delays, not fewer 2. Paper applications take 18-20 business days vs 10-14 for online 3. You can still create an SDI Online account after submitting paper forms and they'll link automatically 4. Claimyr is apparently a game-changer for actually getting through to EDD representatives I had no idea services like Claimyr even existed, and honestly it seems like it should be illegal that we need third-party help to access our own government benefits, but I'm grateful for any solution that works! The fact that Adrian got such clear guidance from EDD using this service gives me hope that there are ways to navigate the system effectively. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and advice. This is exactly the kind of real-world guidance you can't get from official sources, and it's going to save me so much stress and confusion with my own claim. Really appreciate having found this supportive community!

•Welcome to the community, Rudy! Your summary is spot-on and really captures all the key lessons from this thread. As another newcomer, I was feeling pretty lost navigating the SDI system until I stumbled upon this discussion too. It's incredible how much clearer everything becomes when you hear from people who've actually been through the process rather than trying to decipher the official EDD website (which honestly feels like it was designed to confuse people). The Claimyr discovery alone has completely changed my approach to dealing with EDD - I was dreading the thought of spending entire days on hold, but knowing there's a reliable way to actually speak to someone makes the whole process feel much more manageable. Really grateful for communities like this where people genuinely help each other out!

This thread is absolutely gold for anyone navigating the SDI system! I'm dealing with my first disability claim and was completely lost until I found this discussion. Adrian, your situation is almost identical to mine - I also had internet issues and ended up submitting paper forms last week, then immediately regretted it when I heard how much slower the processing is. The advice from everyone here has been incredibly reassuring, especially Marcus's step-by-step approach and the confirmation that you can create the online account without causing duplicates. I had no idea that was even possible! And wow, the Claimyr service sounds like a complete game-changer - I've been putting off calling EDD because I've heard such horror stories about the wait times, but 10-15 minutes to actually speak with someone? That's incredible. It's honestly frustrating that we need third-party services to access our own benefits, but I'm just grateful there are solutions that work. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences - this is exactly the kind of real-world guidance you can't get anywhere else. Definitely bookmarking this thread and the Claimyr link for when I need to check on my own claim status!

•Anderson, I'm so glad you found this thread helpful! It's amazing how many of us have been in similar situations with the paper vs. online dilemma. This community has been such a lifesaver for navigating EDD's confusing system. I was also completely overwhelmed when I first started my SDI claim, but seeing everyone's real experiences here made everything so much clearer. The Claimyr tip really is a game-changer - I used it last week and got through to an EDD rep in about 12 minutes, which felt like a miracle after hearing all the horror stories about phone wait times. It's definitely frustrating that we need workarounds to access our own benefits, but at least we're all sharing these solutions with each other! Hope your claim goes smoothly and you get the answers you need. This thread should honestly be pinned as a guide for anyone dealing with paper application concerns!

Just wanted to chime in as another newcomer who's been silently following this thread - it's been absolutely invaluable! I'm currently waiting on my first SDI claim (also submitted on paper due to website issues) and was getting really anxious about the timeline until I read Adrian's update. The 18-20 business day confirmation from EDD is actually much more reasonable than I expected based on some of the horror stories floating around online. What really impressed me about this discussion is how everyone came together to provide practical solutions rather than just complaining about the system (though those complaints are totally valid!). The Claimyr recommendation is brilliant - I had no idea services like that existed, and it's honestly ridiculous that we need third-party help to reach our own government agencies, but I'm grateful for any tool that works. For anyone else in our situation: this thread basically has everything you need to know about handling the paper application dilemma. Don't submit duplicates, create your online account anyway, use Claimyr to actually get through to EDD if needed, and expect about 3-4 weeks for processing. Thanks everyone for sharing your real-world experiences - it makes such a difference to hear from people who've actually navigated this system successfully!
