Late SAR7 upload caused CalWORKs discontinuance - will December benefits still come through?
I'm freaking out a little bit right now. My SAR7 was due on the 5th but my printer was broken and I couldn't get to the library until the 7th to print and scan it. I uploaded it to BenefitsCal that same day and everything on my account shows it as 'uploaded' and 'signed'. But I just checked my EBT card and noticed my cash aid AND CalFresh have been discontinued!!! I called the automated line and it confirmed my benefits were cut off. I'm worried because rent is coming up and I NEED that December payment. In the past, I think they used to still give you the benefits for the current month even if you were late, and then just cut you off the next month if you didn't fix it? But maybe that changed? Has anyone had this happen recently? Will I still get December's payment since the system already has my SAR7 uploaded? Or do I need to do something else to get my benefits turned back on? The earliest I can get to the county office is next week and I'm really worried.

You need to call your worker ASAP. When you're late with your SAR7, they automatically start the discontinuance process. Since you submitted it after the deadline but before the end of the month, you should be eligible for "rescission" - which means they can restore your benefits without you having to reapply. But here's the important part: even though you uploaded it, someone at the county needs to actually PROCESS it. They won't automatically see it and fix things. You need to call and tell them you uploaded it so they can process the late SAR7 and stop the discontinuance.

•Thank you! I've been trying to call all morning but I'm stuck in the automated system and it won't let me talk to a real person. It just keeps saying "all workers are busy" and then hangs up on me. Should I just go to the office in person?

same thing happnd to me last year!!! they cut me off even tho i turned it in just 2 days late. u gotta call right away and tell them u already uploaded it. they'll do whats called a "rescision" and ur benefits come back on. but if u wait 2 long u might have to reapply all over again

•doesn't always work that way. depends on your county. in my county they made me do a whole new application even though i was only 1 day late with my SAR7 last summer. what a nightmare that was.

If you've been trying to call but can't get through, try using Claimyr. It's a service that will wait on hold with the CalWORKs office for you and then call you when they reach a live person. I had the same problem last month and was getting nowhere with the phone system. Used Claimyr and they got me through to a worker who fixed my case that same day. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE and their website is claimyr.com - worth every penny when you're stressed about benefits getting cut off.

•Thanks for the tip! I've never heard of this service. Did they need a lot of personal info from you? I'm desperate to talk to someone at this point.

•They just need your phone number to call you back when they reach a worker. You don't give them any of your CalWORKs info - they just connect the call and then you talk directly to the county worker.

The rules changed a bit in the last few years. Here's what happens now: 1. If you submit SAR7 BEFORE the first of the next month, they can do a "rescission" and restore benefits without a new application 2. If it's AFTER the first, you have to reapply completely Since you uploaded on the 7th of this month, you're still within the rescission period. BUT the problem is that uploading doesn't mean processing. Someone has to actually look at your form and approve it. With backlogs right now, it could be sitting in their system unprocessed. You have two options: physically go to the office with proof you submitted it (bring a screenshot of your BenefitsCal account showing it was uploaded) OR keep calling until you reach someone who can help.

•Thank you for explaining this! I'll try to get through on the phone today, and if that doesn't work I'll go to the office first thing Monday. Would it help to submit another SAR7 in case something was wrong with my upload?

•I wouldn't submit another one unless they specifically ask for it - that might just confuse things more. But definitely take screenshots showing the date you uploaded it!

THis is why I HATE the SAR7!!! county is so strict about deadlines but then takes FOREVER to process stuff we submit on time!! I turned in my SAR7 early last month and they STILL discontinued me claiming they never got it even tho I had proof of submission. Had to waste a whole day at the office fixing their mistake. One thing - make sure your income info on the SAR7 was filled out correctly. If you missed anything or the numbers don't add up they'll discontinue you even if you turned it in.

•This 100%! I got cut off because I forgot to check ONE box about housing costs even though I'd been reporting the same rent for 2 years. The whole system is designed to kick people off I swear.

Did you get the discontinuance notice in the mail? Sometimes those notices cross in the mail with your submission. Since you submitted the SAR7 before the end of the month, they should be able to rescind the discontinuance and restore your benefits. You might not get them on your normal payment date, but you should still get December benefits eventually after they process your form. Definitely call and keep trying to reach someone. If you can't get through by phone, go in person and bring proof that you submitted the form on BenefitsCal. They can see the timestamp of when you uploaded it.

•Yes, I got the notice yesterday in the mail. It was dated the 5th, so they must have generated it automatically when they didn't have my SAR7 by the due date. I'll keep trying to call and will go in person next week if needed. I just hope I don't lose December's payment completely since rent is due soon.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone at the office! For anyone who has this problem in the future: 1. They confirmed my SAR7 was in their system but hadn't been processed yet 2. The worker did a "rescission" right while I was on the phone 3. My December benefits will be released but will be delayed about 3-5 days from my usual payment date 4. They noted in my file that I submitted before the end of the month so my case stays open Such a relief! The worker said they're really backed up processing forms right now, so anyone who uploads anything should always call to make sure it gets processed quickly, especially if it's something time-sensitive like a SAR7.

•Thank you so much for updating! That gives me hope. I'm still trying to get through to someone but will keep at it. Did you call the main number or did you have a direct number for your worker?

•I called the main line (866 number) but selected the option for "report a change" instead of "speak to my worker" - that got me to a person much faster!
