Late SAR 7 submission - no CalWORKs payment today, what happens next?

I messed up big time and turned in my SAR 7 form like 2 weeks after the deadline. Totally my fault, I know, but I'm panicking because I didn't get my Cash Aid deposited this morning. No food stamps showing on my EBT card either. I have rent due next week and my kid needs diapers. Has anyone been in this situation before? Will they restore my benefits once they process the late form or am I completely cut off now? Do I have to reapply from scratch? The worker who took my form yesterday just said it would 'go into processing' but didn't tell me when I might see benefits again.

This happened to me last year! You don't have to reapply completely but your benefits will be discontinued until they process the late SAR 7. Once processed, they should restore your CalWORKs retroactively to the beginning of the month. BUT the CalFresh (food stamps) part probably won't be retroactive, just going forward from when they process it. You should call your worker ASAP to confirm they received everything and see if they can expedite it because of your situation.

3 WEEKS?? Omg I can't wait that long! Did you have to do anything special to get it restored or just wait?

Let me clarify how late SAR 7 processing works with CalWORKs and CalFresh: 1. When you submit a late SAR 7, your benefits are technically discontinued at the end of the month following your submit month 2. Once they process your late form, CalWORKs can be restored retroactively if you were otherwise eligible 3. CalFresh benefits cannot be restored for days that passed while discontinued 4. You do NOT need to reapply if it's within 30 days of discontinuance For immediate needs: ask about an "immediate need" payment for emergency situations. Also, check if you qualify for the diaper support supplement ($30/month for children under 3) if you're not already receiving it. As others mentioned, contacting your worker is crucial right now.

Thank you for explaining! I didn't know about the diaper supplement. My daughter is 18 months old. Is that something extra I need to apply for? And is there a faster way to contact my worker? I've been trying all day with no luck.

Have you tried going in person? Sometimes that's faster than calling. I had to do that when my CW got cut off and needed to talk to someone right away.

I work during office hours and can't take more time off this week after missing yesterday to drop off the form. Plus I don't have gas money to drive across town right now 😞

I had the same issue with getting through on the phone when my benefits got cut off for a late quarterly report. I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at my county office in like 15 minutes. They call the office for you and then call you back when they reach a real person. Saved me days of trying. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Once I finally got through, my worker was able to expedite my SAR 7 processing since I had immediate needs (rent coming due). Definitely tell them about your situation with the rent and diapers when you reach someone!

OMG thank you!!!! I'm going to try this right now. I'm desperate to talk to someone. Did they restore your benefits quickly after you got through?

Yes, once I actually spoke to my worker and explained my situation, she flagged my case as priority. I had my CalWORKs benefits back in 3 business days. CalFresh took a little longer but at least I could pay my rent!

am i the only 1 that thinks its ridiculous we have to do these reports every 6 months?? like they know my situation hasn't changed, why do i have to risk losing benefits over paperwork? the whole system is designed to kick people off IMO

While the reporting requirements can be frustrating, the SAR 7 is actually less burdensome than the old quarterly reporting system. These reports are required by federal regulations for programs like TANF (which funds CalWORKs). The county has to verify continued eligibility to receive federal funding.

ok but why cant they just check our income electronically? they already have access to our info. just feels like they WANT us to mess up so they can save $$$

Quick tip: make sure you sign up for text or email reminders about your SAR 7 due dates! I almost missed mine too, but got a text reminder 10 days before it was due. You can set this up on BenefitsCal.com or ask your worker to add those alerts to your account. Has saved me from this exact situation multiple times.

That's a great idea. I think I've been getting mail reminders but they probably got mixed in with all the other mail. Will set up text alerts once this mess is fixed.

UPDATE: I used that Claimyr service and got through to my worker! She said they'll process my SAR 7 by the end of the week and my Cash Aid should be restored within 3-5 business days after that. She also submitted an emergency request so I might get it faster. CalFresh won't be retroactive but will start again once the SAR 7 is processed. And I asked about the diaper supplement - apparently I was already getting it but didn't realize it was included in my regular payment. Everyone who commented - THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help during this stressful time!!! Lesson learned about turning in forms on time.

That's great news! So glad you got through to someone who could help. I set a calendar reminder on my phone now for every SAR 7 and recertification deadline after my experience. Never making that mistake again!
