Turned in SAR 7 late - will CalWORKs benefits still come on time?
I'm freaking out right now. I just realized my SAR 7 was due LAST Friday, but I completely forgot about it with everything going on (my son was sick all week and I missed 3 days of work). I filled it out today and dropped it off at the county office this afternoon, but I'm worried my Cash Aid won't come through on time now. Has anyone turned in their SAR 7 late but still got their benefits on the regular payment date? My rent is due next week and I absolutely cannot be late again or my landlord will start eviction. I've never been late with my reporting before - does that matter? Will I have to reapply completely or just wait for processing?

You're probably fine as long as you submitted it before the end of the month. CalWORKs has what they call a 'good cause' policy for late SAR 7s. Being late doesn't automatically mean you'll lose benefits, especially since you got it in within a few days of the deadline. Your worker just needs to process it before the payment cycle runs. If your benefits are usually deposited on the 1st, they might be a day or two late, but you shouldn't have to reapply. Call your worker tomorrow to let them know you submitted it and explain about your son being sick. That could qualify as 'good cause' for the late submission.

•Thank you sooo much for responding! That makes me feel a little better. Do you know if there's any way to request emergency processing? My rent is due on the 3rd and I'm really nervous about the timing.

•Omg that's exactly what I'm afraid of!! Did they tell you why they cut you off instead of just processing it late? Did you call them before they discontinued you?

The official policy is that you have until the end of the month to submit a late SAR 7 form with a good cause reason, and your benefits should continue without interruption. After the end of the month, your case will be terminated and you'll need to reapply. However, even with timely submission before month-end, processing delays can still affect when your benefits are loaded. The key is making direct contact with your eligibility worker to flag the submission for priority processing. I recommend calling the CalWORKs office first thing tomorrow morning. If you can't get through (which is common), try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) - it's a service that helps you get through to a live person at benefit offices without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Once you reach someone, explain that you submitted your SAR 7 and that you have an urgent housing situation. Ask them to expedite processing to avoid a housing crisis. Be sure to mention your son's illness as the good cause reason for the late submission.

•Thank you for explaining the policy! I've tried calling my worker so many times before and always get voicemail. I'll check out that service - I've never heard of it before but anything that helps me actually talk to someone would be worth it right now.

The same thing happnd to me in Decmber and I got my benefits like 4 days late but still got them. They didnt stop my case or anything but my worker said I was lucky cuz sometimes they do. You should be ok if you submitted it before the month ended!!

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me three months ago!! My daughter had the flu and I completely forgot about the SAR 7 deadline. I was about 5 days late turning it in. What I did was I went in person to the office, turned in the form, and then I STAYED there and asked to speak with any available worker for an emergency. I had to wait for like 2 hours but eventually someone saw me and they put a priority flag on my case. My benefits were only delayed by 1 day. The key is you HAVE TO talk to an actual person and explain your situation. Don't just drop it off and hope for the best. They have ways to expedite if there's a housing emergency.

•I wish I had done that! I was in such a rush I just put it in the drop box. I'm going to try calling first thing tomorrow. Do you think I should go back in person if I can't reach anyone by phone?

•YES!!! Go in person if you can't reach anyone by phone. And bring proof of your rent due date and the amount if you have it. That helps them understand it's a real emergency. Also, don't leave until you talk to someone who can confirm they'll expedite it. Good luck!!!

the county workers dont care if u have a good reason they just want to cut people off thats why they make these stupid reports anyway... ive been cut off twice for being late even tho i had good reasons both times. the system is designed to make us fail.

•While I understand your frustration, this isn't entirely accurate. The SAR 7 reporting requirement is actually a simplified version of what used to be monthly reporting. The system does have provisions for late submissions with good cause. I've worked with many families who had late submissions processed without interruption when they communicated with their workers. It's important the OP knows there are options rather than assuming the worst.

This used to happen to me ALL THE TIME when my kids were younger. Here's what I learned works best: 1) Write "URGENT - HOUSING EMERGENCY" in big letters at the top of your SAR 7 2) Include a brief note explaining your good cause reason (child's illness) and mention your rent due date 3) Call every day until you reach someone - morning right when they open is best 4) If your benefits don't come through in time for rent, immediately apply for emergency assistance. CalWORKs has special programs that can help with preventing eviction even if it's due to their processing delays. Your benefits probably won't come on the exact normal day, but they should still process it within a few days if you're persistent. The squeaky wheel gets the grease with these county offices!

•Thank you for the advice! I didn't know about writing that on the form - I'll remember that for the future. I'm going to try calling first thing in the morning. What's the emergency assistance program called if I need to ask about it?

•It's called Emergency Housing Assistance or sometimes Homeless Assistance Program. You can get help with back rent if you're facing eviction. But honestly, I think if you keep calling and explain the situation, you'll get your regular benefits processed in time. Just don't take "I'll leave a message for your worker" as an answer - ask to speak to a supervisor if needed!

•I don't really have anyone who can lend me that much money right now. My family is struggling too and I've already borrowed from friends before. But thanks for the suggestion.

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get through to anyone at the office? If you're still having trouble, remember you can also try contacting your county's general CalWORKs customer service line rather than just your specific worker. Sometimes the main line can help expedite urgent cases or at least put notes in the system about your submission.

•I tried calling this morning and waited for 45 minutes before getting disconnected! I'm going to try that Claimyr service someone mentioned because I'm getting desperate. I'll also try the main customer service line - thank you for suggesting that. I'll update once I know more about whether my benefits will come through on time.
