CalWORKs WTW deregistered during county transfer - help needed for LA to Riverside move
I just moved from Los Angeles County to Riverside County about 2 weeks ago. I reported my move through BenefitsCal and called LA County to inform them. I'm on CalWORKs with my two kids (5 and 7) and was actively participating in my Welfare to Work activities in LA. I checked my WTW portal yesterday and it says I'm 'deregistered' now but Riverside hasn't contacted me yet about transferring my case. My rent is due next week and I'm worried my cash aid might get interrupted. Should I just wait for Riverside to contact me or should I physically go to the Riverside office? Has anyone dealt with a county-to-county transfer recently? Will my WTW hours need to restart from scratch or will they honor what I was doing in LA?

You absolutely need to go to the Riverside County office in person ASAP! County transfers don't always happen automatically even when you report the move correctly. The 'deregistered' WTW status means LA County has already started closing your case, but Riverside might not have picked it up yet. Bring your ID, lease/rental agreement showing your new address, and any recent CalWORKs paperwork from LA County. Ask specifically for an 'Inter-County Transfer' specialist when you get there. They should be able to expedite the transfer and prevent any interruption in your benefits.

•Thank you! Do you know if I'll have to redo my entire WTW plan? I was halfway through a certification program in LA and really don't want to start over...

i moved from san bernardino to riverside last year and mine took almost 3 weeks to transfer even tho i went in person. my cash was late but they backdated it eventually. the annoying part was my wtw worker kept calling my old phone # even tho i updated it everywhere

•This is why I always tell people to keep their old phone active for at least a month after moving counties! The systems don't talk to each other like they should.

Do NOT just wait for them to contact you! I had this exact situation last year moving from Orange to Riverside. Your WTW being deregistered means your CalWORKs case is in limbo right now, which could affect your cash payment. Here's what you need to do: 1. Go in person to the nearest Riverside County DPSS office first thing tomorrow 2. Bring proof of your new address and old case information 3. Ask specifically for an "ICT" (Inter-County Transfer) specialist 4. Request that they contact LA County directly while you're there 5. Get a receipt or confirmation number for your visit As for your WTW activities, Riverside County should honor what you were doing in LA, but you'll likely need to meet with a new WTW counselor to confirm everything. The activities themselves can transfer, but sometimes there are county-specific programs that might need adjustment.

•Thank you for the detailed steps! I'm going to head to the office tomorrow morning. Is there a specific DPSS office in Riverside that handles transfers better than others? I'm near Corona.

I'VE BEEN THRU 3 COUNTY TRANSFERS ON CALWORKS AND IT ALWAYS GOES WRONG!!! The counties NEVER communicate properly! Each time I had to basically start from scratch. Last time they LOST my verification documents and I went 2 months with NO CASH AID because of THEIR mistake!!! You need to go in person AND call every day until it's fixed. Don't trust them when they say "it's processing" - get names, IDs and direct phone numbers of everyone you talk to!!!

•This happened to my sister too. The system is ridiculous. OP definitely needs to stay on top of this or they'll end up with no money and a bunch of excuses.

I work with CalWORKs recipients at a nonprofit, and I recommend trying the Claimyr service to get through to a real person at Riverside County. It's been a lifesaver for my clients who need to reach their workers quickly during county transfers. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE - it helps you skip the phone queue and actually get through to a human. That said, definitely also go in person with all your documents as others have suggested. For your WTW activities, bring all documentation of the certification program you're in, as they should be able to accommodate your continued participation.

•I've never heard of this service before. Have a lot of your clients used it successfully? I've spent hours on hold before and it's brutal, especially with kids in the background.

Yes, many of my clients have used it successfully, especially when dealing with urgent situations like county transfers or potential benefit interruptions. The service connects you with an actual caseworker much faster than waiting on hold yourself. In Riverside County particularly, the wait times can be 2-3 hours during busy periods, so it's really helpful. And it works with the county's regular phone system, so you're still talking to the same workers, just without the wait.

When I moved counties my workor told me wrong info and I almost lost my benefits too! Definitely go in person and also apply for emergency cash if ur worried about rent. They can sometimes give u a emergency payment while they figure out the transfer stuff.

For your question about the Riverside offices - the Arlington office in Riverside is usually the most efficient for ICT cases in my experience, but if you're in Corona, the Corona office on Magnolia can handle it too. Just make sure to arrive early (before they open if possible) as the wait times get really long by mid-morning. Bring every document you can think of related to your case - your approval letters, any WTW paperwork, your children's information, and definitely proof of your new address. A good tip is to take pictures of all these documents on your phone as backup. Regarding your WTW certification program, Riverside County does have agreements with LA County for certain approved training programs, so there's a good chance you can continue without interruption. Make sure to bring your enrollment verification and any progress reports from your program.

•This is so helpful, thank you! I'll go to the Corona office since it's closer. One more question - do you know if I need to bring proof of my kids' school enrollment in our new district? They just started at their new school this week.

Yes, definitely bring proof of their new school enrollment if you have it! School records are one of the best proofs of residency for your children. If you don't have official enrollment papers yet, even the school registration confirmation email or any school correspondence with your new address will help. This will help verify both your new address AND that your children are still in your household (which is required for continued eligibility).

Don't forget that when u move counties they sometimes make u do a whole new intake interview!!! Be prepared to sit there ALL DAY and bring snacks for ur kids if they're coming with u. And DEFINITELY make sure u get NAMES and WORKER NUMBERS of everyone u talk to. I got bounced between 4 different workers when I moved counties!!!!

•This is good advice. They made me do a new interview when I moved too, even though technically they shouldn't need to for a transfer. System is broken.

I went through a similar situation when I moved from San Diego to Riverside County last year. The key thing is to act fast - don't wait for them to contact you because it might not happen automatically. Here's what worked for me: I went to the Riverside DPSS office with ALL my paperwork (ID, lease, kids' birth certificates, recent pay stubs, and my LA County case information). I specifically asked for an Inter-County Transfer worker and they were able to process everything that same day. My WTW activities did transfer over - I was in a job training program and they let me continue it through a Riverside provider. The whole process took about 2 weeks but my benefits weren't interrupted because I acted quickly. Definitely go in person tomorrow morning and don't leave until someone gives you a confirmation that your case is being transferred. Good luck!

•Thank you so much Michael! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing successfully. I'm definitely going first thing tomorrow morning with everything you mentioned. Did you have to restart your WTW hour requirements from zero when you transferred, or did Riverside count the hours you had already completed in San Diego? That's one of my biggest concerns since I've put in so much work already.

I had a similar transfer experience from LA to Orange County about 6 months ago. The "deregistered" status from WTW is actually normal during transfers - it means LA has closed their portion while Riverside picks up your case. Here's what I learned: Go to Riverside DPSS immediately with your case number, recent CalWORKs notices, and proof of address. Ask specifically for the "ICT unit" (Inter-County Transfer). They should be able to see your LA case history in their system even if it shows as closed. For WTW, bring documentation of your certification program - Riverside honored my training hours and let me continue the same program through a local provider. The key is getting there before your next payment cycle starts. Also, call the CalWORKs customer service line at 1-877-847-3663 to document that you're proactively addressing the transfer - this creates a paper trail that can help if there are any delays. Most transfers complete within 10 business days if you stay on top of it.

•This is really helpful information! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - just moved from LA to Riverside and saw the "deregistered" status too. It's good to know that's normal during transfers. Quick question - when you called that customer service number, were you able to actually get through to someone? I've tried calling CalWORKs customer service before and the wait times were insane. Also, did you have any issues with your EBT card still working during the transfer period? I'm worried about grocery money for my kids while this gets sorted out.
