My CalWORKs benefits transferring between counties - will past notices go to old address?
I just moved from San Diego to Los Angeles County last month and transferred my CalWORKs case. My worker in LA County is saying I need to provide verification for some months from last year (October through December) but I'm confused about where those notices would have been sent. I was receiving Cash Aid in San Diego during those months, so would any paperwork about that period go to my old San Diego address? Or will LA County send everything to my new address here? I've already updated my address in BenefitsCal but I'm worried about missing important notices about my past benefits that might affect my current eligibility. Has anyone dealt with county transfers before? What should I do to make sure I don't miss any important paperwork?

When you transfer between counties, your new county (LA) handles all current and future correspondence. They should send any requests for verification to your current address. However, they might be asking for documents from your time in San Diego that you should have received back then. If you're being asked for verification of something from Oct-Dec, those are likely documents you should have already received and kept. Things like: - Income verification - Rent receipts - School attendance records - WTW participation logs What specific verification is LA County asking for? That would help determine if these are new requests or documents you should already have.

•They're asking for proof of rent payments and some childcare receipts from those months. I had them but lost a folder when moving. I'm just worried they'll discontinue my benefits if I can't provide these old documents. Is there a way to have San Diego send copies?

•That's exactly what I'm afraid of! Did you end up getting back on after being cut off? How long did it take?

You need to be proactive with county transfers. LA County won't have access to send anything to your old San Diego address - that's not how the system works. But they DO need verification from your time in San Diego to maintain continuity of your eligibility. Here's what you should do: 1. Call your LA County worker and explain you lost some documents during the move 2. Ask if they can request the information directly from San Diego County (they should be able to) 3. If that doesn't work, contact San Diego County directly and request copies of your verification documents 4. Make sure to submit a signed form allowing LA to communicate with San Diego about your case If you're trying to reach either county by phone and can't get through, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It helped me get through to my worker same-day instead of waiting for callbacks that never came. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Don't wait until they threaten discontinuance - be proactive!

•I was gonna suggest this same thing! I had to use Claimyr when I moved from Fresno to Riverside and my cash aid got stuck in transfer limbo for 6 weeks. The service got me through to an actual person in like 20 minutes when I'd been trying for days. Totally worth it cause I was about to get evicted.

•Thanks! Do you know what department I should ask for? Just the general CalWORKs line?

This is why I HATE CalWORKs!!! This whole system is designed to make us fail. They know damn well people don't keep every receipt for 12+ months, especially during a MOVE between counties! Then they demand impossible paperwork and cut your benefits when you can't provide it. It's all a game to them. They probably already have those records but want to see you jump through hoops. THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO ACCESS YOUR SAN DIEGO RECORDS!!!

•I understand your frustration, but counties do have different computer systems that don't always talk to each other seamlessly. While they should be able to access basic eligibility info between counties, detailed verification documents might not transfer automatically. The system definitely needs improvement, but there are ways to navigate it successfully.

I transferred from Orange County to LA County in 2024 and had a similar issue with them asking for old verification. I found out you have to fill out form CW 215 "Request for Records" and submit it to your previous county. Your old county should send the records directly to your new county worker. If your LA worker is being difficult, remind them of MPP Section 40-187 which covers inter-county transfers. They are supposed to help facilitate this process, not just demand you produce documents you no longer have.

•Thank you SO MUCH for the specific form name! I didn't know about CW 215. Will definitely ask for this specifically when I talk to them tomorrow.

Isnt there some kinda rule that they have to give u time to get the papers? Like they cant just cut u off right away if ur trying to get the stuff from san diego?

•Yes, you can request a "Good Cause" extension if you're actively trying to get documents but need more time. You need to do this BEFORE the deadline though. Once they issue a Notice of Action for discontinuance, it's harder to fix.

I had a similar issue when I moved counties and lost my childcare verification during the move. I found out my childcare provider could print duplicate receipts for me - have you tried contacting your old providers? Also, if you paid rent via bank transfer or money order, your bank might have records you can print out. Just another option if the county process is taking too long.

•This is unfortunately true sometimes. If you're having trouble getting through, try calling right when they open (usually 8am). Another option is to visit the office in person if you can - sometimes that's faster than phone calls for urgent issues like this.

UPDATE: I called San Diego this morning and they said they can't send anything directly to LA County without some form that LA needs to initiate. Tried calling LA afterward but couldn't get through to anyone after being on hold for almost 2 hours before getting disconnected. This is so frustrating! My re-determination is due in 2 weeks and I'm worried my benefits will stop.

•That's the CW 215 form that someone mentioned earlier. If you're struggling to reach LA by phone, I'd honestly recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) - watch their demo video at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. It helps get through the phone queue. Otherwise, you might need to physically go to the LA County office if possible. When benefits are at risk, sometimes in-person is the only way to resolve things quickly.

One more thing to try - check if you can upload a written statement through BenefitsCal explaining the situation. Under California regulations, a signed statement from you can sometimes serve as verification when other documentation isn't available. Make sure to explain that you're actively trying to get the records from San Diego but need more time. Be specific about what steps you've already taken.

I went through this exact same situation when I moved from Riverside to LA County about 8 months ago! The key thing is to act fast since your redetermination is coming up. Here's what worked for me: 1. Go to your LA County office in person if at all possible - bring a printed copy of your BenefitsCal account showing your address change and any correspondence you have 2. Ask specifically for form CW 215 and have them fill it out right there with you 3. Get a copy for your records and ask them to fax it to San Diego that same day 4. While you're there, request a "good cause" extension for your verification deadline - explain you're actively working to get the documents I also had success calling San Diego directly and explaining I was a former client who needed verification sent to my new county. They were actually more helpful than LA! Ask for their CalWORKs records department specifically. Don't give up - the system is frustrating but there are ways to make it work. You've got this!

•This is really helpful advice! I'm definitely going to try going in person tomorrow morning. Quick question - when you asked for the "good cause" extension, did they give you any paperwork or was it just verbal? I want to make sure I have documentation that I requested extra time in case there are any issues later. Also, do you remember roughly how long it took for San Diego to send the records to LA once they had the CW 215 form?
