CalWORKs benefits deposited after moving - will I get next month's payment too?

I just moved from San Diego to Sacramento last week and updated my address with the county office for my CalWORKs and CalFresh. Surprisingly, I already received both benefits for May on my EBT card yesterday! But when I logged into BenefitsCal today, it still shows my usual benefit amount under 'Next Issuance' like nothing changed. Does anyone know if they sometimes accidentally issue benefits twice when you move counties? I'm worried they'll deposit June's benefits too and then hit me with an overpayment later. Should I call and tell them or just wait and see what happens? The last thing I need is owing money back when I'm already struggling with moving costs.

Uhh they almost NEVER give you extra $$ by mistake lol. The system usually shows next months benefits but doesnt mean theyll deposit early. Its probly just showing ur regular amount for June that you'll get on the normal day. I wouldnt worry bout it

Thanks! So you think the website is just showing June's amount already? I'm paranoid because last time I had an issue they took forever to fix it and I couldn't get anyone on the phone for days.

When you move counties, your CalWORKs case has to be transferred, which can sometimes create confusion about benefit timing. The BenefitsCal portal typically shows your upcoming eligible amount, but that doesn't mean it's being issued early. What's likely happening is you received May's benefits normally, and the system is showing your upcoming June benefits. The 'Next Issuance' field on BenefitsCal shows what you're eligible for, not necessarily what's been processed for payment. If you want to be 100% sure, you should contact your new county worker to verify. Moving between counties can sometimes cause temporary issues with benefit timing.

This is correct. Same thing happened to me when I moved from Alameda to San Joaquin. The website showed my benefit amount but it was just for the next regular payment cycle.

I had almost the EXACT situation last year!!! Moved from LA to Riverside and got so confused with my CalWORKs and CalFresh. The website was showing my regular payment amount but I was freaking out about overpayments too. Turned out everything was fine - the system just takes time to fully update after a county transfer. HOWEVER I would still call just to be safe because honestly the county workers sometimes don't process address changes correctly and that can mess up your benefits for months!!!

Did you have trouble reaching someone when you called? I've been calling the main number but keep getting stuck in the automated system.

Try using Claimyr to get through to a real person. I was in the same situation when I moved counties last year and couldn't reach anyone for days. Used claimyr.com and they got me through to an actual caseworker in like 20 minutes. Totally worth it when you're dealing with inter-county transfers which can get messed up easily. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE

I second this! County transfers are complicated and sometimes things fall through the cracks. Better to talk to someone directly about your situation rather than risk an overpayment. I used Claimyr too when I had a similar issue.

To clarify a few things about moving between counties with CalWORKs: 1. When you move counties, your case must be transferred to your new county of residence 2. Benefits should continue without interruption if you reported the move correctly 3. The BenefitsCal portal shows your eligible amount, not what's been issued 4. The "Next Issuance" field typically shows the upcoming month's eligible amount 5. It's normal to see your regular benefit amount displayed for the upcoming month You're smart to be cautious about potential overpayments. I recommend keeping documentation of when you reported your move. If you're concerned, you can also check your EBT transaction history through the EBT website or app to confirm exactly when benefits were deposited and for which month.

Thank you for the clear explanation! I did report my move about 10 days before I actually moved, so hopefully everything is properly documented. I'll check my EBT transaction history to make sure.

Just want to add that sometimes the CalWORKs and CalFresh benefits might get handled slightly differently during a county transfer. When I moved, my CalFresh transferred smoothly but there was a weird delay with my Cash Aid where it showed one amount online but I got something different. Definitely call to check!

also make sure u filled out ur SAR7 correctly!!! if u didnt report ur move on time they can cut u off or give u an overpayment!!! they r super strict about reporting requirements and the income reporting threshold (IRT

Thats not how it works. Address changes have to be reported within 10 days but you dont need to wait for the SAR7 for that. SAR7 is for income changes and household changes.

Just to follow up on this thread - address changes must be reported within 10 days, but they are not tied to your Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) timeline. The SAR7 is primarily for reporting income changes and household composition. For county transfers with CalWORKs: 1. Report your move to both counties (old and new) 2. Your case will be transferred to the new county 3. Benefits should continue uninterrupted if done correctly 4. The new county becomes responsible for your case management The BenefitsCal portal sometimes takes time to fully update after a county transfer, which is likely why you're seeing your regular benefit amount still displayed. This doesn't mean you'll receive duplicate benefits.

Update: I finally got through to Sacramento County yesterday. The worker confirmed what most of you said - the website is showing June's normal payment, and my May payment was processed correctly. She also verified my case transfer is in progress and I shouldn't have any gaps in benefits. Thanks everyone for your help!

That's great news that you got it sorted out! County transfers can be really stressful when you're not sure what's happening with your benefits. It's always better to call and confirm rather than worry about potential overpayments. Glad Sacramento County was able to clarify everything for you and that your case transfer is going smoothly. Moving is expensive enough without having to stress about benefit issues on top of it!

So glad everything worked out! I went through something similar when I moved counties and the uncertainty is the worst part. It's really helpful that you updated us with the outcome - I'm sure other people in similar situations will find this thread useful. Moving is stressful enough without worrying about your benefits getting messed up!
