CalFresh benefits split between old and new county EBT cards - accidentally cut up old card!

Help!! I recently moved from Alameda to San Bernardino County and reported my change of address for CalFresh. I got my new EBT card from San Bernardino with my regular monthly benefits loaded, but I just realized that my supplemental benefits ($189 extra) are still being loaded onto my old Alameda County EBT card!! The problem is I cut up that old card thinking everything would transfer automatically! 😭 Has anyone dealt with this before? Can I get that money transferred to my new card somehow? Or did I just lose all those benefits by destroying the card? I'm freaking out because that extra money really helps feed my kids between paychecks. Should I call San Bernardino or Alameda county office about this?

omg i did similar when i moved counties. u can call ebt customer service and get replacement for old card they'll mail it to ur new address

So even though it's from a different county they can send it to me here? Should I call the EBT hotline or the old county directly? I'm so stressed about this!

This happens sometimes during county transfers with CalFresh. When you move counties, they open a new case and sometimes issue a new card, but the old case doesn't always close properly, especially if there were supplemental benefits scheduled. You need to request a replacement card for your old county. Call the EBT customer service line at 1-877-328-9677. They can send a replacement card for your old county to your new address. Don't worry, cutting up the physical card doesn't make you lose the benefits - they're still in the account linked to that card number. Once you get the replacement card, you should contact San Bernardino County to request a full case transfer so everything moves to your new card going forward. There's often a lag in the system when counties communicate about transfers.

Thank you so much!! This is a huge relief. I'll call the EBT customer service today. Just to be clear - the benefits don't expire while I'm waiting for the new card, right? I think I cut up the old one almost 3 weeks ago.

EBT benefits stay on your account for 274 days (about 9 months) before they expire, so you're definitely fine for 3 weeks! Just make sure when you call to get the replacement card that you have your old county case number or SSN and verify your old address first, then tell them you need it sent to your new address. They'll need to verify your identity before changing the mailing address for security reasons.

I actually had this EXACT situation last year moving from LA to Riverside. The EBT hotline was impossible to get through - kept disconnecting after 40+ minutes on hold. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. My replacement card came about 5 days later.

THIS IS WHY THE SYSTEM IS SO MESSED UP!!! They can't even get basic stuff like moving counties right! I've been dealing with CalFresh for 6 years and they STILL mess up my benefits every time anything changes. You shouldn't have to jump through hoops just because you MOVED. The left hand never knows what the right is doing with these county offices!!

I know right?! I naively thought moving counties would be smooth since it's all California, but nope! The San Bernardino worker never mentioned anything about my supplemental benefits possibly staying on the old card. Now I'm dealing with this mess.

There's actually a form for this! When you move counties, you're supposed to fill out an ICT (Inter-County Transfer) form. Most eligibility workers should initiate this automatically when you report an address change to a new county, but sometimes they miss it. The ICT process is supposed to transfer everything - your case history, verification documents, and all benefits to the new county. For now, definitely get the replacement card for your old benefits. But when you talk to San Bernardino, specifically ask if they completed an ICT with Alameda County. If not, request that they do so to prevent this issue with future benefits. Your case should be fully transferred to your new county within 30 days of the ICT request.

ya but ICT never works right lol. my worker said they did mine but my old county still had me active for like 3 months! double EBT cards is common

i think your cutting the card messed things up cause the system mighta tried to transfer everything but the card wasnt active no more???? anyone else think thats what happened?

That's not how it works. Cutting up the physical card doesn't deactivate the account. The benefits are tied to the account number, not the physical card. When you request a replacement, they simply send a new card that accesses the same account. The issue here is that there are two separate accounts (one for each county) rather than a complete transfer of benefits to the new county account.

UPDATE: I called the EBT customer service line and they're sending me a replacement for my old Alameda card! They said my supplemental benefits are still there (phew!!). They're mailing it to my new address and I should get it in 7-10 business days. I also called San Bernardino County and asked about the ICT form someone mentioned. The worker said they did submit it but these things can take time to process fully. She suggested I use up the benefits on both cards, and by next month everything should be consolidated on my new card. Thanks everyone for the help!!

Great news! Just make sure to keep both cards until you're 100% certain all benefits have been properly transferred. Sometimes even after they say it's complete, there can be one more deposit to the old card. Glad you got it sorted out!
