Moving counties right before SAR7 due date - transfer CalWORKs case first or submit SAR7 to old county?
I'm really stressing about my CalWORKs benefits after our sudden move. We just relocated from San Diego County to Kern County 4 days ago (landlord sold our building with barely any notice). The problem is my SAR7 is due next Tuesday! I'm confused about what to do - should I just fill out the SAR7 with my new address and send it to San Diego County, or am I supposed to call San Diego first to initiate an inter-county transfer to Kern before dealing with the SAR7? I don't want to mess anything up and lose our Cash Aid during this transition. Has anyone moved between counties while on CalWORKs and can tell me the right order to do things?

You definitely need to submit your SAR7 on time to your CURRENT county (San Diego) even though you've moved. Don't miss that deadline or your benefits will stop! On that SAR7, report your new address in Kern County. Then separately call San Diego County to initiate the inter-county transfer. They should transfer your case to Kern within 30 days. Your next benefits will still come from San Diego until the transfer is complete.

•Thank you!! I was so worried about doing things in the wrong order. Will San Diego automatically tell me when the transfer to Kern is finished? Or do I need to apply all over again with Kern?

i did this last yr moving from LA to riverside... jst make sure u send the SAR7 to SD first and mark ur new adress. then call them after. if u try 2 do the transfer first they'll just tell u to do the report anyway. dont 4get to update ur mailing adress on benefitscal too

•Thanks for sharing your experience! Good reminder about BenefitsCal - I almost forgot to update that too.

When I moved counties last year they actually messed up my transfer and I lost benefits for 2 months!!! Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Write down who you talk to, dates, and get case numbers for all communications. San Diego is supposed to continue your benefits during the transfer period but Kern might try to make you reapply (they shouldn't but counties do whatever they want). The most important thing is getting that SAR7 in ASAP so your case stays active for transfer.

•Omg that's what I'm afraid of! Did you eventually get backpay for those missed months?

•Yes but only after I filed for a state hearing! It was a nightmare. First SD said they sent everything to the new county, then the new county said they never got it. Nobody would take responsibility. Just keep calling both counties after you submit the SAR7 until you're 100% sure the transfer happened correctly.

This happened to me but the other way (Kern to SD). Submit the SAR7 to San Diego with your current info including your new address. Then immediately after call them about the transfer. You don't need to do a whole new application in Kern, it's just a transfer. Oh and make sure your WTW requirements are being met cuz the transfer doesn't pause those.

Officially, here's what you need to do: 1. Submit SAR7 to San Diego County before the due date with your new address 2. Call San Diego County at 1-866-262-9881 to request an inter-county transfer (ICT) to Kern 3. San Diego should continue your benefits during the 30-day transfer period 4. Kern will send you a form called CW215 after they receive your case 5. You'll need to complete an interview with Kern to continue benefits there The key is keeping your case active by submitting that SAR7 on time. If your case closes for any reason, you'd have to reapply in Kern instead of transferring.

•This is so helpful, thank you! Do you know if I can submit the SAR7 online through BenefitsCal or should I mail a paper copy to make sure they receive it?

•Either way works, but I'd recommend submitting through BenefitsCal because you'll get a confirmation number immediately. If you mail it, also call their SAR7 hotline to confirm they received it. And keep screenshots or copies of everything you submit as proof.

Sorry to hear about your sudden move! I know trying to get ahold of someone at the San Diego CalWORKs office can be IMPOSSIBLE. I was in a similar situation last month and kept getting disconnected after waiting forever. I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real worker in under 5 minutes. You might want to check it out at claimyr.com - there's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE It saved me hours of frustration when I needed to talk to someone urgently about my case transfer. Just thought I'd share since you're on a tight timeline with that SAR7 due so soon.

Everyone is giving you good advice about submitting the SAR7 first, but I want to add that you should also update your address with the Post Office to make sure you get any important notices during the transfer period. Sometimes counties mail important documents even when you have online accounts set up. And definitely keep checking your BenefitsCal messages during the transfer!

I just remembered something important! When you call about the transfer, ask them specifically if they need your RENT AGREEMENT for your new place in Kern. Some counties require this as part of the transfer process, others don't. But if they need it and you don't provide it, they might delay your transfer which is super annoying.

•That's a really good point! Our new place is actually with my sister for now until we find something permanent. Would they still need some kind of documentation even though I'm not on a lease?

•If you're staying with family, you'll need to get a statement from your sister confirming you live there. It doesn't need to be a formal lease, but should include the address, who lives there, and be signed by your sister. This helps prevent fraud and confirms you're actually living in Kern County now.

Just wanted to add one more thing that helped me when I moved counties - take photos of your SAR7 before you submit it AND get a screenshot of the confirmation if you submit online. I had to prove I submitted mine on time when there was confusion during my transfer. Also, if you can't get through to San Diego on the phone right away, don't panic! As long as you get that SAR7 in by the deadline, your benefits should continue while you work on the transfer process. The most important thing is meeting that Tuesday deadline - everything else can be sorted out after!
