Moving to San Bernardino County - Will my CalFresh benefit amount change when transferring counties?
I'm currently receiving CalFresh in Riverside County but just found an affordable apartment in San Bernardino. Need to move next month because my current lease ends and rent is going up by $400 which I can't afford. My benefits are currently $425/month for me and my two kids. Will my benefits stay the same when I transfer to San Bernardino County? Do I need to reapply completely or just report my address change? Anyone gone through a county transfer recently? I'm worried about a gap in benefits during the move since rent will take most of my paycheck.

You don't need to reapply completely when moving counties in California. You'll need to report your address change to your current county, and they should initiate what's called an Inter-County Transfer (ICT). Your case gets electronically transferred to San Bernardino, and your benefit amount should stay the same as long as your income, expenses, and household size remain the same. However, you should report this ASAP because the transfer process can sometimes take time to process. Call your current eligibility worker to start the transfer.

•Thanks for the info! Do you know if there's anything specific I need to tell them about San Bernardino County? And will my EBT card still work during the transfer process?

I went through this last year moving from LA to San Bernardino. The process was supposed to be smooth but honestly it was a nightmare getting anyone on the phone. I kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person at the county office in about 15 minutes. They have a demo video here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me so much time and stress! Once I actually talked to someone, they sorted out my transfer pretty quickly.

•This isn't entirely accurate. While the benefit calculation method is the same across counties, your shelter costs and utility allowances could change based on your new housing situation, which might affect your benefit amount. Make sure to report ALL your new expenses when you do the transfer.

I handle these Inter-County Transfers regularly as part of my job. Here's what you need to know: 1. Report your move at least 10 days before you change address 2. Your current county will send an electronic transfer to San Bernardino 3. Your EBT card will continue to work without interruption 4. Your benefit amount should remain the same IF your rent, utilities, income and household composition remain similar 5. You don't need to reapply, but San Bernardino may contact you to verify your new address 6. Your semi-annual report (SAR7) schedule stays the same 7. Your recertification date remains unchanged One thing to note: if your new rent is substantially different, report that as it could affect your benefit calculation (higher rent might mean higher benefits).

•This happened to my sister last month! Her benefits actually went UP after moving counties because her new rent was higher and she reported it. Make sure u have proof of ur new rent ready!

WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T JUST MOVE WITHOUT TELLING THEM FIRST!!!!! I moved from Alameda to San Bernardino last year and didn't notify them until after I moved. My benefits got completely cut off for 45 DAYS while they sorted it out!!! They said I should have reported BEFORE moving and they had to verify my new address which took forever. I had to use food banks for almost 2 months. The system is RIDICULOUS.

•Oh no, that sounds awful! I definitely don't want my benefits interrupted. I'll call tomorrow to report the move since it's happening in 3 weeks. Did you eventually get your same benefit amount back?

When you report your move, make sure you also submit verification of your new rent amount in San Bernardino. Your shelter deduction is a major factor in calculating your CalFresh benefits. If your rent is higher in San Bernardino (even if overall cost of living might be lower), you might actually qualify for more benefits. Bring a copy of your new lease agreement when you report the change of address. Also, if your utilities aren't included in rent, you might qualify for the Standard Utility Allowance (SUA) which can increase your benefits as well.

•This is really helpful! My new place is actually $150 cheaper per month, but utilities aren't included anymore. I'll make sure to mention that when I report the change. Do you think my benefits might go down since the rent is lower?

•Yes, children in households receiving CalFresh benefits automatically qualify for free school meals through direct certification. This is true in all California counties including San Bernardino. When you enroll your children in their new school, let the school know you receive CalFresh benefits.

•CalFresh rules and eligibility are the same statewide, but benefit amounts can vary based on your individual circumstances like rent, utilities, and income. So if those change when you move, your benefit amount might adjust. The program itself doesn't change between counties, just how your specific situation fits into the calculation.

Just want to add - when you call to report your move, ask for confirmation that they've initiated the Inter-County Transfer and get a reference number if possible. I learned this the hard way when my transfer got "lost" in the system for 2 weeks. Having that reference number helped me track it down when I called back. Also, keep your current county case number handy - San Bernardino will need it to pull up your case. The whole process should be seamless but it's good to have documentation just in case something goes wrong. Good luck with your move!

•This is such good advice! I never thought about getting a reference number but that makes total sense. I've had issues with government offices "losing" paperwork before so having that documentation could save me a lot of headaches. I'll definitely ask for confirmation and a reference number when I call. Thanks for sharing your experience - it really helps to hear from people who've actually been through this process!
