ebtEDGE stopped showing pending CalFresh benefits amount for next month - why?

Has anyone else noticed that ebtEDGE doesn't show pending benefits anymore? For like 2 years I could check my account around the 25th and it would show how much I'd be getting on the 1st, labeled as "pending." It was super helpful for budgeting. But for the last few months, nothing shows up until the actual deposit date. I called the EBT customer service number but got stuck in that automated system hell. Is this a new policy or just a glitch with the system? Really frustrating since I'm trying to plan my grocery budget for my kids.

same here!! used to be able to see what i was gettin like a week b4 deposit now nothin till day of. super annoying when ur tryin to plan

Exactly! I'm a single mom with 3 kids and I need to know ahead of time what I'll have to work with. Do you know if there's a different way to check besides ebtEDGE?

This changed around January 2025 when they updated the ebtEDGE system. The pending benefits feature was removed as part of their system upgrade. According to my county worker, this was done to prevent confusion when benefit amounts might change between the pending stage and actual issuance. Now benefits only appear on your account when they're officially issued on your regular issuance date. If you need to know your benefit amount in advance for budgeting purposes, you can: 1. Call your county office directly and ask about your upcoming issuance amount 2. Check your most recent Notice of Action which should state your certified benefit amount 3. Log into BenefitsCal which sometimes shows your monthly allotment

Thank you so much for explaining! That's frustrating but at least I understand why now. My last Notice of Action is from 6 months ago when I did my SAR7. I'll try BenefitsCal, but that site is always glitchy for me.

I think they did this on purpose so people can't plan ahead!!! The whole system is designed to keep us confused. My worker NEVER answers the phone and when I leave messages no one calls back for WEEKS. Then they wonder why people get frustrated and give up on benefits they're entitled to.

PREACH!! I've called my county office 9 times in 2 days n nobody picks up EVER. its like they dont want us to get help

I noticed this too and I think it might be related to the budget issues they were having at the county level. My friend works for DPSS and she said they had to implement a lot of system changes recently. The pending benefits feature was causing issues because sometimes the system would show one amount pending and then change it before deposit, leading to a lot of angry calls and confusion.

0 coins

That actually makes sense. I did have that happen once where it showed $420 pending but then I only got $380 when it deposited. I was so confused. Still wish they'd fix it to work properly instead of just removing the feature though.

Wait, are we talking about CalFresh or Cash Aid here? Because my Cash Aid still shows pending on ebtEDGE a few days before deposit, but my CalFresh doesn't anymore. So maybe it's just a CalFresh specific change?

0 coins

You're absolutely right - this change specifically affects CalFresh benefits. Cash Aid (CalWORKs) pending amounts still display in advance on ebtEDGE. The systems are integrated but managed separately. CalFresh had issues with pending amounts changing due to last-minute adjustments, which is why they removed that specific feature while keeping it for Cash Aid. Good observation!

Since the ebtEDGE update, your best option for checking your benefit amount in advance is to log into BenefitsCal (https://benefitscal.com/). After logging in, go to "My Benefits" and then "Benefit Details." For most counties, this will show your certified monthly allotment amount. The system has improved significantly since early 2025, so if you had trouble before, it might be worth trying again. Alternatively, if your county has implemented text notifications, you can sign up to receive a text when your benefits are about to be deposited. Not all counties offer this yet, but it's becoming more common.

Thank you for the detailed information! I just logged into BenefitsCal and found the benefit details section. You're right - it does show my monthly amount. And I had no idea about text notifications. Do you know how to sign up for those?

0 coins

Glad that helped! For text notifications, you need to opt in through your county office. Some counties let you do this through BenefitsCal under "Communication Preferences," but others require you to fill out a form. I'd recommend checking the "Contact Preferences" section in your BenefitsCal account first. If you don't see an option there, you'll need to contact your county office directly to ask if they offer the service and how to enroll.

i just stared at my phone for 20 mins thinkin maybe i was doin something wrong lol. glad im not the only 1 who noticed this change!!

My worker told me you can still find out your benefit amount before deposit day by calling the IVR system at 1-877-328-9677. You have to go through the menu options but supposedly it will tell you your next benefit amount even if ebtEDGE doesn't show it. I haven't tried it myself yet tho.

Thanks for the tip! I'll try calling that number tomorrow. Fingers crossed it works!

This is so helpful to read everyone's experiences! I'm a new CalFresh recipient and was getting worried that something was wrong with my account when I couldn't see pending benefits. I've been checking ebtEDGE obsessively since I got approved last month, trying to figure out when my benefits would come through. Now I understand it's just the new system changes. Thanks especially to everyone who shared the workarounds - I'm definitely going to try BenefitsCal and see if my county has the text notification option. It's reassuring to know there are still ways to plan ahead even with these changes!

Welcome to CalFresh! I totally understand that obsessive checking - I did the same thing when I first got approved. It's such a relief when you know help is coming but nerve-wracking when you can't see it in the system yet. @32a1b7165b12 and @e876857ccfe8 have been super helpful with the workarounds. I'd also suggest keeping a screenshot of your approval notice or any paperwork that shows your benefit amount, just as backup reference for budgeting. The learning curve with all these systems is real, but this community is great for figuring things out together!

Welcome to the CalFresh community! I totally get that anxiety about checking constantly - I was the same way when I first got approved. The system changes have definitely made things more confusing for newcomers. One thing that helped me was setting up a simple budget spreadsheet with my expected benefit amount from my approval paperwork, so I could still plan my grocery trips even without seeing the pending amount. The BenefitsCal suggestion from @e876857ccfe8 is solid - that site has become my go-to for checking my monthly allotment. Hope your first deposit goes smoothly!

This is such a frustrating change! I'm a working mom of two and that pending amount feature was literally how I planned my monthly grocery shopping. I used to screenshot it around the 25th so I could make my shopping list and meal plan accordingly. Now I'm basically flying blind until deposit day, which makes it so much harder to budget and take advantage of sales early in the month. I tried the BenefitsCal suggestion and it does show my certified amount, but sometimes that changes if there are adjustments, so it's not always reliable. Really wish they would bring back the pending feature or at least give us better advance notice tools. The system changes seem to make things harder for families, not easier.

I completely feel your frustration! As another working parent, I relied so heavily on that pending amount feature for the exact same reasons - meal planning and budgeting around sales. It's like they took away one of our few tools for staying organized. I've been trying the BenefitsCal workaround too, but you're absolutely right that it's not always accurate when there are last-minute adjustments. Have you tried calling your county office directly to ask about your upcoming benefit amount? I know it's an extra hassle, but some workers are willing to tell you over the phone if you explain you need it for budgeting purposes. It shouldn't be this complicated just to plan grocery trips for our families!

This is so frustrating! I'm new to CalFresh (just got approved 3 months ago) and I had no idea this was a recent change. I thought I was doing something wrong when I couldn't see my pending benefits anymore. I've been stressing every month not knowing exactly when or how much will be deposited. Thank you everyone for sharing the workarounds - I'm definitely going to try the BenefitsCal option and see if my county has text notifications. It's really helpful to know I'm not alone in dealing with this change. The fact that so many parents are struggling with the same budgeting issues shows how important that pending feature was for planning family meals and groceries. Hoping they either fix it or give us better alternatives soon!

Don't feel bad about thinking you were doing something wrong - I think most of us had that same panic when the feature first disappeared! I'm glad this thread helped clarify what happened. Since you're newer to the program, one tip that's helped me is to write down your benefit amount from your initial approval letter and keep it somewhere handy for reference. Even though amounts can change, it gives you a baseline for budgeting until you get familiar with the new workarounds everyone mentioned. The learning curve with these systems is real, especially when they keep changing things on us without much notice!

I've been dealing with this same issue for months and it's been driving me crazy! I'm a single parent working two part-time jobs and that pending amount feature was honestly a lifesaver for my budgeting. I used to check it religiously around the 25th so I could plan which grocery store to hit up for the best deals at the beginning of the month. Now I'm basically gambling with my meal planning until the benefits actually hit my account. I tried the BenefitsCal website like others suggested but it's been super glitchy on my phone and sometimes shows old information. Really hoping they either bring back the pending feature or give us something better because this change has made managing my family's food budget way more stressful than it needs to be.

I totally understand your frustration as a single parent juggling multiple jobs! The timing issue is so real - missing those early month sales can really impact your grocery budget. Since BenefitsCal is glitchy on your phone, have you tried accessing it on a computer at a library or asking a friend if you can use theirs? Sometimes the desktop version works better than mobile. Also, @09caeda4afd1e4213d5f841b81ea5ba8 mentioned calling 1-877-328-9677 though @e0017c566cdb said it might only show current balance. It's worth trying different menu options to see if you can get next month's info. This whole situation really highlights how these "system improvements" often make life harder for the families who need these benefits most.

This thread has been so helpful! I'm a college student and single mom who just started receiving CalFresh last month, and I was genuinely panicking thinking my benefits weren't going to come through when I couldn't see the pending amount. I've been checking ebtEDGE every day like it was going to magically appear. Now I understand it's just the system changes and not something wrong with my case. Thank you everyone for sharing the workarounds - I'm definitely going to try BenefitsCal tomorrow and see if I can get those text notifications set up. It's such a relief to know there are still ways to plan ahead, even if they're more complicated now. Really appreciate this community for helping newcomers like me figure out these confusing system changes!

Welcome to the community, Amaya! Being a college student AND a single mom is incredibly challenging, so don't feel bad about the daily ebtEDGE checking - we've all been there! It's totally normal to worry when you can't see that pending amount, especially when you're new to the system. I'm so glad this thread helped ease your anxiety. The BenefitsCal site should definitely help with your planning, and fingers crossed your county has the text notification option! One quick tip from my experience: once you get your first deposit and know your regular issuance date, try to do your big grocery shopping trip a day or two after that date when you know the money is definitely there. Takes away some of the uncertainty while you're still getting used to the system. You've got this, mama! 💪

Just wanted to add my experience for anyone still struggling with this change - I found a workaround that's been pretty reliable! If you call your county office during the last week of the month and ask specifically for your "benefit calculation specialist" or "eligibility technician," they can usually tell you your exact benefit amount for the upcoming month over the phone. I've done this for the past 3 months and it's worked every time. You might have to wait on hold, but it's way better than playing the guessing game with grocery budgeting. Also, some counties will email you a "benefit verification letter" that shows your monthly amount if you request it - mine sends it within 24 hours. Hope this helps other parents who are trying to plan ahead like I was!

This is such a great tip! I never thought to ask specifically for a "benefit calculation specialist" - that's way more targeted than just calling the general number. And the benefit verification letter option sounds amazing too. Do you know if all counties offer the email verification letter service, or is it something I'd need to ask about specifically? I'm definitely going to try both of these approaches next week. It's so helpful when community members share these practical workarounds that actually work. Thank you for taking the time to share what's been successful for you!

Welcome to the CalFresh community, Yuki! I completely understand that nervous checking - I think we've all been there when we're new to the system and things don't work the way we expect. It's totally normal to worry that something went wrong with your application when you can't see that pending amount. This thread has been such a lifesaver for so many of us dealing with the same confusion! The BenefitsCal website suggestion has worked well for me, and definitely ask your county about those text notifications - they're a game changer when available. Don't hesitate to reach out here if you run into any other issues. We're all figuring this out together, and there's always someone who's dealt with whatever challenge comes up. You're not alone in this!

This whole thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm a working single dad who just got approved for CalFresh about 6 weeks ago, and I was starting to think I was losing my mind when I couldn't see any pending benefits on ebtEDGE. I've been checking it obsessively every day since my approval, especially as my deposit date approaches. Reading everyone's experiences makes me feel so much better knowing this is a widespread issue from the system changes and not something wrong with my case. I'm definitely going to try the BenefitsCal workaround and call my county office to ask about text notifications. It's frustrating that they removed such a useful budgeting tool without giving us proper alternatives, but I'm grateful for this community sharing all these practical solutions. Thank you everyone for helping newcomers like me navigate these confusing changes!
