EBT card suddenly cancelled with benefits still on it - second time in 4 months!!
I'm so frustrated right now! Just got home from the grocery store where my EBT card was declined. Called the number on the back and apparently my card has been CANCELLED! I literally just got this replacement card 4 months ago after my last one mysteriously stopped working. I have over $340 in CalFresh benefits sitting on that card that my kids and I need for food this week. Has anyone else experienced this? Do I have to wait another 7-10 business days for a new card? Is this happening to everyone or just me getting unlucky twice? The automated system didn't give me any explanation for why it was cancelled.

•Ugh that's so frustrating! Did they at least transfer your benefits to the new card automatically? I can't wait 5 days with hungry kids...

There have been a lot of EBT card cancellations lately due to potential security breaches. It's actually a protective measure, but county offices have been terrible about communicating this to recipients. Your benefits are safe and will automatically transfer to your new card. You have two options to speed things up: 1. Go to your county office in person with ID and they can often issue a temporary card same-day 2. Call your county's CalFresh office and request an emergency replacement - they can expedite shipping to 3 days if you explain it's your only food source

•Excellent info, but good luck actually reaching someone by phone!!! I tried calling my county office 8 times last month when my SAR7 wasn't processed. Always disconnected after 1+ hour wait.

•If you're having trouble reaching your county CalFresh workers by phone, I had success using Claimyr. It's a service that holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when a real person answers. Saved me hours of waiting when my benefits got messed up. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 - their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out. Totally worth it for emergency situations like this.

This is RIDICULOUS!!! The system is broken. I've had my card cancelled THREE TIMES in the past year with no warning and NO explanation!!! I'm convinced they do it on purpose to make it harder for us to use our benefits. Every time they cancel, it's at least 7 days for a new card, and then you have to update all your auto-payments for bills. I've been hit with late fees because of this garbage. And try explaining to your hungry kids why there's no food. The whole system needs to be OVERHAULED!!!

•While I understand your frustration, the card cancellations are actually due to security protocols. There's been a significant increase in EBT fraud in 2024-2025, so the state is being extra cautious. But you're right that the communication is terrible - they absolutely should notify recipients before cancelling cards. For future reference, you can register your current card for text/email alerts at benefitscal.com which will sometimes (not always) notify you of changes to your card status.

•It's so embarrassing! I had a full cart of groceries and had to leave it all there. The cashier was nice but I could feel everyone staring. Let me know if you find any way to get a replacement faster.

**UPDATE FOR EVERYONE HAVING THIS ISSUE:** I just checked with a colleague who works for CDSS. They confirmed there was a large batch of EBT cards cancelled on Monday due to a potential data breach at one of their processing centers. This affected approximately 35,000 cards statewide. To get the fastest replacement: 1. Call the EBT customer service line (not your county) at 1-877-328-9677 2. Specifically request an "emergency replacement due to the security breach" 3. Tell them you have no food resources and need expedited delivery They should be able to get you a card in 2-3 business days instead of the standard 7-10. Your benefits remain safe in your account throughout this process.

•THANK YOU!!! This is so helpful. I just called the EBT line and mentioned the security breach and they're expediting my card! Should have it by Friday. You're a lifesaver!

I work for a community organization that assists with benefit issues. In addition to the great advice already shared about expediting your replacement card, here are some emergency food options while you wait: 1. Your local food bank - many now offer same-day emergency boxes 2. Call 211 for immediate food assistance resources in your area 3. If you have school-aged children, many schools offer free dinner programs 4. Some counties have emergency grocery vouchers for situations exactly like this Don't be embarrassed to use these resources - that's exactly what they're there for!

•Thank you so much. I didn't know about the school dinner programs - going to call my kids' school right now to check. Really appreciate the help.

does anyone know if this affects the cash benefits too or just the food part? i have rent due and was planning to withdraw my calworks money tomorrow...

•Yes, unfortunately this affects the entire card functionality, including both CalFresh and CalWORKs benefits. You won't be able to access your cash benefits until you receive your replacement card. However, your benefits are still in your account, just temporarily inaccessible. If you have an urgent rent payment, call your CalWORKs worker directly and explain the situation - they sometimes have emergency procedures for these situations.
