CalFresh EBT card suddenly canceled after benefits loaded - money disappeared!

I'm freaking out right now! My CalFresh benefits were supposed to load yesterday (the 9th). When I checked in the morning, the money was actually there - I saw the balance on my EBT account. But when I tried to use my card at the grocery store later that day, it kept getting declined. I called the EBT customer service number and they told me my card was CANCELED?! How is that even possible? The benefits were literally there in the morning, and now they're gone and my card is apparently canceled. I have three kids to feed and no idea what happened. Has anyone dealt with this before? Do I have to go to the county office in person or what? I can't afford to wait weeks for a new card if that's what they're going to tell me.

This is definitely not normal. Someone at the county office must have taken action on your case. There are only a few reasons an EBT card would be canceled after benefits were loaded: 1. Suspected fraud (someone reported something) 2. Administrative error (county worker mistake) 3. System glitch (rare but happens) 4. Recent change in household (did you report someone moving out?) You need to contact your county worker directly ASAP. Don't just call the EBT card service - they only handle card issues, not your actual case.

Thank you!! No, I haven't reported any changes. My household is the same as always. How do I contact my county worker directly? Every time I call the main number I just get stuck in that automated system for hours and never get through to a real person.

omg this happened to me last month!!! turns out my ex somehow got access to my account and reported that I moved out of state (which I didn't). took almost 2 weeks to get it fixed and i had to bring ID and proof of address to the office. check if anyone might have reason to mess with your benefits

That's scary! No, I don't think anyone would do that to me. At least I hope not. Did you have to get a whole new card or were they able to reactivate your old one?

Try using Claimyr to get through to a CalFresh worker faster. I was having a similar issue with my benefits disappearing and spent days trying to reach someone. With Claimyr (claimyr.com), I got through to a real person in about 15 minutes instead of waiting hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Seriously, it saved me so much stress when I was in panic mode about feeding my kids.

This sounds like a system error that happened during the recent CalFresh system update. Several counties in California were migrating data last week, and we've seen a few cases where benefits were loaded and then cards got erroneously deactivated. You need to: 1. Call your county office and specifically request an "emergency benefit restoration" due to system error 2. Ask for an emergency replacement card if they can't reactivate your current one 3. Request expedited benefits (they can issue emergency benefits within 3 days if you qualify) 4. Get the name and ID number of any worker you speak with If they try to make you reapply or wait for the standard 10 days for a new card, ask to speak to a supervisor. This is their error, not yours, and you shouldn't have to wait for a fix.

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I'll call first thing tomorrow morning and ask for exactly this. Should I mention the system update specifically? I don't want them to think I'm making stuff up.

did u check ur mail? sometimes they send notices bout card changes but most people dont read all that stuff. also check if ur SAR7 was due, they cancel benefits if u dont turn those in

I just checked all my mail and didn't see anything from them. My SAR7 isn't due until next month, and I always turn those in early. This came out of nowhere!

I had something kinda similar happen but it turned out my card was expired and I didn't notice lol. Check the expiration date on your card maybe?

I just checked, it doesn't expire until 2026. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I work at a community organization that helps with CalFresh issues. What you're describing sounds like what we call an "administrative discontinuance" - essentially your case was flagged for some reason and benefits were pulled back after being issued. Common reasons include: - Income verification discrepancy (did you have a job change recently?) - Address verification issue (any mail returned to county?) - Household composition question (did anyone move in/out?) - Duplicate benefit issuance detected in system The fact that you saw the benefits load, then disappear, and have a canceled card strongly suggests someone took manual action on your case. You need to speak directly with your eligibility worker or their supervisor. If you can't get through by phone, consider going to the office in person first thing tomorrow. Bring ID, proof of address, and any recent CalFresh correspondence. Request an emergency replacement card while there - they can often print a temporary one immediately while you wait for the permanent one to arrive.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! Nothing has changed with my income or household, but I did move about 4 months ago. I updated my address with CalFresh when I moved though, and have been receiving mail from them at the new address without problems. I'll try calling again tomorrow, and if that doesn't work, I'll go in person.

@original poster - were you able to get this resolved? I'm curious what happened because I want to make sure I don't encounter the same issue with my benefits next month.

UPDATE: Finally got through to someone at the county office! Turns out there was a fraud alert on my account because someone tried to use my card number in another state (I've never even left California!). They froze everything as a precaution. The worker was actually really helpful once I got through - they're issuing me a new card that I can pick up TOMORROW at the office, and all my benefits will be transferred to the new card. They're also giving me a temporary emergency card I can use immediately. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!!

Oh wow, glad you got it resolved! That fraud alert thing is scary - someone must have gotten your card info somehow. This is a good reminder for everyone to regularly check their EBT account online/app for any suspicious activity. Did they tell you how someone might have gotten your card number? Also, for future reference, do you know if there's a way to set up alerts for when your card is used outside your usual area?

Great questions! I didn't think to ask how they got my card info - I was just so relieved to finally talk to someone who could help. From what I understand, card skimmers at stores and ATMs are pretty common, or sometimes there are data breaches at retailers. As for alerts, the worker mentioned I can sign up for text notifications through the EBT Edge app when my card is used, but I don't think they have location-based alerts yet. Definitely going to be more careful about where I use my card from now on!

So glad you got this sorted out @Laura Lopez! That fraud alert situation is really concerning though. For anyone else reading this thread, here are some tips to protect your EBT card from fraud: - Cover your PIN when entering it at stores/ATMs - Check your balance regularly through the app or by calling the number - Only use your card at reputable stores and avoid sketchy ATMs - If you notice any unauthorized transactions, report them immediately - Never give your card number or PIN to anyone over the phone It's also worth noting that if you're ever a victim of EBT fraud, you can request benefit replacement for stolen funds. The process varies by county but most will restore benefits if you report the fraud within 10 days of discovering it. Thanks for updating us on the resolution - it helps the whole community learn from these situations!
