CalFresh benefits disappeared from EBT card overnight - emergency help needed!
Woke up this morning to find my CalFresh benefits COMPLETELY GONE from my EBT card!!! Had $625 loaded just yesterday (it's for me + my 2 kids) and now showing ZERO balance. Didn't spend anything since my last grocery trip 3 days ago. Called the EBT customer service number but got stuck in that stupid automated system for 45 minutes. Has anyone else experienced this recently? Do benefits just randomly disappear? I'm seriously freaking out because we have nothing else to eat in the house and I don't get paid until next Friday. Any advice on what I should do or who to contact???

•Thx for responding. That's so frustrating! Did she get her benefits back the same day or did she have to wait? I checked my BenefitsCal account and everything says I'm active and eligible through 2025. No missing SAR7 or anything showing.

This is unfortunately not uncommon. There are several reasons this could be happening: 1. System glitch - sometimes the EBT system has temporary outages 2. Your Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) or annual recertification deadline may have passed 3. The county received information about a change in your household that affected eligibility 4. Suspected benefit fraud (unusual purchasing patterns can trigger this) 5. Administrative error The EBT customer service line is very limited in what they can actually do. You need to contact your county CalFresh office directly. They're the only ones who can see what happened to your benefits and potentially issue emergency replacement benefits if appropriate.

•Thank you for this detailed explanation! But I swear I've done everything right - submitted my SAR7 last month and got the confirmation. My recertification isn't due until September. I'll try calling the county office tomorrow morning when they open.

I'm dealing with this EXACT SAME ISSUE right now!!! My benefits disappeared two days ago - $780 just GONE!!! Called county office 17 TIMES yesterday and couldn't get through. Their stupid phone system just keeps disconnecting me after 30+ minutes on hold. I've been trying to feed my kids on ramen and whatever's left in the pantry. This system is designed to FAIL US.

•Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to the CalFresh office? I was in the same situation and was getting disconnected constantly, then someone told me about this service that gets you through to a real person at the county. I tried it at claimyr.com and they actually called me back with a worker on the line in about 20 minutes. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me from having to go to the office and wait all day with my kids.

•@profile4 Just checked out that video - does this actually work? I'm willing to try ANYTHING at this point. The county office is 45 minutes away and I don't even have gas money to get there now.

•@profile3 It worked for me! The worker told me there was a system flag on my account because my employer reported higher income than what I reported (it was from a one-time bonus that pushed me over the IRT). They fixed it on the call and released my benefits same day.

This actually happens more frequently than you might think, especially around the beginning of the month when system updates occur. Here are the steps you should take: 1. First, check if your card is actually working by calling the EBT customer service number (866-328-9677) and checking your balance that way - sometimes the app/website shows incorrect information 2. If that confirms zero balance, contact your county CalFresh office directly. Explain that your benefits disappeared without notice and request emergency assistance. Under CalFresh regulations, if you're already approved and your benefits were erroneously discontinued, they can often restore them within 24-48 hours. 3. If you can't reach anyone by phone, you may need to go in person to your county office with your EBT card and identification. 4. Document everything - take screenshots of your BenefitsCal account showing active status, any confirmation numbers from submitted documents, etc. 5. If you're in immediate need, ask about emergency replacement benefits. The county can expedite benefits in crisis situations.

•Thank you so much for these detailed steps! I did call the EBT number and it confirmed $0 balance. I'll try calling the county office first thing tomorrow when they open, and if I can't get through, I'll go in person. We're okay for tonight (found some pasta and sauce in the back of the cabinet), but definitely need this resolved ASAP. I'll gather all my documentation tonight.

Everyone keeps saying to "call the county office" but has anyone actually gotten through lately? I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone about my verification documents last month. The system is completely broken.

•I'm worried about this too. My county office (Riverside) is notorious for long wait times. Has anyone had luck getting through recently? Is there a specific time that's better to call?

•I had the same issue with trying to reach San Bernardino County for weeks. Finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to someone the same day. Their system basically holds your place in line and calls you when they have a real person. Saved me from having to take time off work to go to the office.

•I didn't even think of that! How would I check if that happened? The last transaction I remember making was at Food 4 Less on Monday. Would I be able to see if someone else used the card somewhere?

•You can check your transaction history by calling the EBT customer service number or logging into the EBT cardholder portal online. If you see transactions you don't recognize, report it immediately as potential benefit theft. The county can investigate and may be able to replace stolen benefits under certain circumstances.

UPDATE: I just spoke with a CalFresh policy specialist about this issue. There was apparently a system-wide update to the EBT database last night that's causing balance display issues for some recipients. She advised: 1. Try using your card at a store or ATM to check the actual balance (even a balance inquiry at an ATM would work) 2. If the funds are truly gone, it's likely due to one of these recent policy changes: - New quarterly verification requirements for certain households - Automated income verification through the Federal Data Services Hub that might have flagged a discrepancy - The recent adjustment to income reporting thresholds (IRT) for 2025 Important: If you're experiencing an emergency food situation, request an expedited interview when you call. Under California regulations, they must address emergency food needs within 3 business days.

•Thank you for this update! I just tried checking my balance at the ATM like you suggested, and it still shows $0. I'm definitely calling first thing tomorrow and will ask for that expedited interview. I haven't received ANY notification about new verification requirements, and my income actually decreased recently when my hours got cut, so that shouldn't be the issue.

•That's a good suggestion for emergency help. Do you know if they require any documentation or proof of need? I've never had to use a food bank before.

I'd like to clarify something important: if your benefits were valid yesterday and disappeared today without any notification, this is almost certainly a system error or administrative issue, not an eligibility problem. Under CalFresh regulations, the county MUST provide you with a Notice of Action (NOA) at least 10 days before reducing or terminating your benefits. The only exceptions are very specific circumstances like confirmed fraud or explicitly requesting case closure. When you call tomorrow, specifically mention that you did not receive the legally required 10-day notice, and that you're requesting immediate benefit restoration while they investigate the issue. Use those exact terms. This often triggers a faster response as it references their legal obligations.

•This is incredibly helpful advice! I definitely didn't receive any Notice of Action - I check my mail religiously for anything CalFresh related. I'll specifically mention the 10-day notice requirement when I call tomorrow. Thank you!
