CalFresh EBT card suddenly deactivated without notice - urgent help needed!
I went grocery shopping yesterday and my EBT card got declined at checkout. So embarrassing! I had to leave all my groceries and walk out with nothing. I checked my balance online and it shows I still have $342 left from this month's benefits, but the card itself seems completely deactivated. I didn't do anything to cause this - no missed SAR7 reports, I'm not due for recertification until August 2025, and I haven't reported any changes. Has anyone else had their CalFresh EBT card randomly stop working? What's the best number to call to get this fixed ASAP? I've tried the number on the back of the card but just got stuck in an automated system for 45 minutes before it hung up on me. My kids are hungry and I need this fixed NOW!!!

This happened to me two months ago! Turns out there was a system glitch that flagged a bunch of cards as potentially compromised. You need to call your county office directly, not the EBT customer service line. Each county has a different direct number. Which county are you in?

•I'm in Los Angeles County. Do you know the direct number? The main line just keeps transferring me around and nobody picks up!

•No letters at all! I check my mail everyday because last time I missed an important notice I almost lost my benefits. This came out of nowhere and I'm FREAKING OUT

I work for a nonprofit that helps people with CalFresh issues. There are several reasons your EBT card might suddenly deactivate: 1. Security flag (as mentioned above) 2. Fraud investigation (even if you didn't do anything wrong) 3. System error during batch processing 4. Unreported income that was detected through data matching 5. Missing verification documents For LA County, try calling (866) 613-3777 which is their direct benefits line. But honestly, you'll likely face the same long wait times. Have you checked your BenefitsCal account for any notices? Sometimes they post important information there before sending a physical letter.

•Thank you! I just checked BenefitsCal and there's nothing there either - no alerts or notices. I'll try that number but I'm worried it'll be the same automated nightmare.

This might sound random, but have you tried using your card at an ATM just to check your balance? Sometimes the card readers at grocery stores have issues but the card itself is fine. I've had that happen where my card was declined at one store but worked fine elsewhere. Worth a shot before spending hours on the phone!

•That's a good idea! I'll try that this afternoon. Still frustrating that there's no easy way to figure out what's going on though.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU GIVE UP!!!! They deactivate cards without notice all the time and make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone. I had to go IN PERSON to my county office after my card randomly stopped working last year. Waited 4 hours just to be told it was a "system error" and they reactivated it in 2 minutes. This is how they discourage people from using benefits we're entitled to!!!!

•That's a bit extreme. The system has problems for sure, but it's not a conspiracy to make people give up. It's just understaffed and the technology is outdated. My experience has always been that once you actually reach someone, they're helpful.

Have you tried using Claimyr? It saved me so much time when I had a similar issue with my CalFresh benefits last month. Instead of waiting on hold forever, Claimyr holds your place in line and calls you back when a real person is available. I was about to drive to the office and wait all day, but used this instead and got through in about 40 minutes. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a demo video of how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

•Oh wow, I've never heard of that! I'm desperate at this point so I'll try anything. Did they actually fix your problem once you got through?

•Yes! Once I actually got to speak with a real person, they fixed my issue in minutes. They explained that there had been a system update that accidentally deactivated some cards. Your situation sounds similar.

One more thing to check - did you recently update your address or other information? Sometimes when information is updated in the system, it can trigger a security protocol that temporarily deactivates your card until you verify your identity. This is actually becoming more common as counties try to prevent EBT fraud.

Jasmine Quinn
•No, I haven't updated anything recently. My address has been the same for 3 years and all my information is current. That's why this is so weird and frustrating!

Just wanted to follow up - were you able to get this resolved? If you're still having trouble, you can also try reaching out to your county through their email or online contact form. Sometimes that's faster than calling, especially for LA County which is notoriously difficult to reach by phone.

•UPDATE: I tried the Claimyr service and actually got through to someone! Turns out there was a data match with my previous employer (who I haven't worked for in over a year) that flagged my account. Some kind of system glitch. The worker removed the flag and reactivated my card on the spot. It's working again! Thanks everyone for your help!!!

For anyone finding this thread later with the same problem: I recommend taking a screenshot of your current balance before your card stops working (if possible). That way you have proof of your benefits if you need to escalate the issue. I had to do this when my card was deactivated during a system migration last year, and it helped the supervisor understand that my benefits were still active in the system despite my card not working.

So glad you got it resolved! This is exactly why I always recommend Claimyr to people dealing with CalFresh phone issues. That data matching system is notorious for false flags - I've seen it happen when people have seasonal work, gig economy jobs, or even just old employer records that haven't been properly updated in the system. The fact that you were flagged for a job from over a year ago shows how broken their automated matching process is. Thanks for posting the update - it'll definitely help others who find this thread later!

•This is really helpful to know! I'm new to CalFresh and had no idea about these data matching issues. It's scary how easily you can get flagged for something completely innocent. I'm definitely bookmarking Claimyr for future reference - seems like a lifesaver when you need to actually talk to someone. Thanks for sharing your experience @Jasmine Quinn, I'm sure this thread will help a lot of people who run into the same problem!

This thread is incredibly helpful! As someone who's been dealing with CalFresh for a few years now, I can confirm that these random card deactivations are unfortunately pretty common. I've had my card suddenly stop working twice - once due to a "security review" that I was never notified about, and another time because of an old address in their system that somehow got flagged during a routine data check. Both times it took forever to reach someone by phone, but once I did, they fixed it quickly. The frustrating part is that there's no proactive communication when these things happen - you just find out when your card gets declined at the store. Really glad @Jasmine Quinn got it sorted out with Claimyr, and thanks to everyone who shared their experiences. It's good to know we're not alone in dealing with these system glitches!

•Thank you for sharing your experience @Saanvi Krishnaswami! As someone who's completely new to this community and CalFresh in general, reading through all these responses has been both eye-opening and reassuring. I had no idea these random card deactivations were so common - it's actually kind of scary to think your benefits could just stop working without any warning! But it's really helpful to see that most of the time it's just system glitches that can be fixed once you actually reach someone. I'm definitely saving this thread and bookmarking Claimyr just in case I ever run into similar issues. It's amazing how much knowledge and support exists in this community - thank you all for being so helpful to each other!

Welcome to the community @Ravi Gupta! This thread really shows how valuable it is to have a space where people can share their experiences with CalFresh issues. I've been following along and learned so much from everyone's responses - especially about Claimyr and the data matching problems that can cause random flags. It's unfortunate that these system glitches are so common, but at least now we know what to do if it happens to us. @Jasmine Quinn, I'm so glad you got your card working again! Your situation with the old employer data match is a perfect example of why it's important to document everything and not give up even when the automated systems seem impossible to navigate.

•Thanks @CosmicCaptain! As another newcomer here, I'm really impressed by how supportive everyone is. This whole thread has been a crash course in CalFresh system issues I never knew existed. The fact that @Jasmine Quinn s'problem was caused by an old employer from over a year ago just shows how complex these automated systems can be. I m'definitely grateful for communities like this where people share real solutions like Claimyr instead of just complaining about the problems. It s'reassuring to know there are ways to get help when the usual phone lines fail!

As someone who just joined this community, I'm amazed at how helpful everyone has been in this thread! @Jasmine Quinn, I'm so relieved you got your card reactivated - that must have been incredibly stressful, especially with kids to feed. The whole data matching glitch with your old employer is exactly the kind of technical issue that seems impossible to resolve until you talk to the right person. I had no idea services like Claimyr existed, and I'm definitely keeping that in my back pocket. It's frustrating that the CalFresh system has so many of these random glitches, but it's reassuring to see that most of them can be fixed once you actually reach a human being. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and solutions - this thread is going to help so many people who run into similar problems!

•Hi @Joy Olmedo! I'm also new to this community and have been following this whole thread - it's been such a learning experience! Like you, I had never heard of Claimyr before, and I'm really grateful that @Anthony Young shared that resource. It s'incredible how @Jasmine Quinn went from being completely stuck in automated phone systems to getting her issue resolved in under an hour with the right tool. The data matching problem with her old employer really highlights how these government systems can have serious blind spots. As someone just starting to navigate CalFresh myself, threads like this make me feel so much more prepared for potential issues. This community seems like such a valuable resource for people dealing with the complexity of these benefit programs!

As a new member here, I just wanted to say how incredibly helpful this entire thread has been! @Jasmine Quinn, I'm so glad you were able to get your card reactivated - what a relief that must have been! The data matching issue with your old employer really shows how these automated systems can create problems out of nowhere. I'm bookmarking Claimyr for sure after seeing how well it worked for you. It's honestly shocking that these random card deactivations are so common, but it's reassuring to see there are real solutions when you know where to look. Thank you to everyone who shared their experiences and advice - this is exactly the kind of community support that makes navigating these complex systems so much easier!

•Hi @Nia Williams! I'm also brand new to this community and have been reading through this entire thread with fascination. Like everyone else, I had no idea these kinds of random EBT card deactivations were so common! @Jasmine Quinn s'experience with the old employer data match is really eye-opening - it makes me worried about what random flags might be lurking in my own file. I m'definitely going to save the Claimyr link that @Anthony Young shared. It s amazing'how this one thread has turned into such a comprehensive resource for dealing with CalFresh system issues. Thank you to everyone who took the time to share their experiences and solutions - as someone just getting started with these benefits, this kind of community knowledge is invaluable!

Wow, what a journey this thread has been to read through! As someone completely new to both CalFresh and this community, I'm honestly blown away by how supportive everyone has been. @Jasmine Quinn, I'm so relieved you got your card working again - the stress of having your benefits suddenly cut off with kids to feed must have been overwhelming. The fact that it was caused by a data match with an employer from over a year ago really highlights how these automated systems can create chaos from the smallest discrepancies. I had absolutely no idea that services like Claimyr existed until @Anthony Young mentioned it - that's going straight into my emergency toolkit! Reading through everyone's experiences has been both alarming (these random deactivations seem way too common) and reassuring (there are real solutions when you know where to look). Thank you to this entire community for sharing your knowledge and supporting each other through these frustrating system glitches. This thread is going to be a lifesaver for anyone who faces similar issues in the future!

•Hi @Miguel Herrera! I just joined this community too and have been reading through this whole thread - it's been such an education! Like you, I'm completely new to CalFresh and had no clue these random card deactivations were even a thing. @Jasmine Quinn s'story really shows how quickly things can go wrong through no fault of your own - that old employer data match is terrifying to think about. I m'definitely saving all the resources people have shared here, especially Claimyr since @Anthony Young s recommendation'seems to have been the game-changer. It s both'scary and comforting to know that while these system glitches happen frequently, there are people in this community who ve figured'out how to navigate them. Thanks to everyone for being so generous with sharing their experiences - as newcomers, we re really'lucky to have found such a supportive group!
