Confused about P-EBT payments for children under 6 - Third payment coming or just two total?

Hi everyone, I'm really confused about the P-EBT benefits for kids under 6 years old for this year. My daughter is 4 and we received two separate payments on our P-EBT card a couple months apart (in February and April). But I thought I heard from another mom at daycare that there's supposed to be a THIRD payment coming? Has anyone else received a third payment yet? Or was it just those two payments total for the whole program? The county office keeps transferring me around when I call and I can't get a straight answer. Thanks for any help!

i got 2 payments for my son whos 5, havent heard anything about a 3rd one tho. the benefit papers only mentioned 2 payments for the school year i think

Thanks for responding! Did your benefit papers come in the mail? I never got anything explaining the payments, they just showed up on our card.

The current P-EBT program for children under 6 for the 2024-2025 period was designed as a two-payment distribution. The first payment covered September-December and the second covered January-May. There's been some confusion because the previous year's program had three payments, but this year they consolidated it into just two larger payments. If you check the CDSS website under P-EBT information, they have a payment schedule confirming this. Hope that helps!

Oh that makes so much sense! Thank you for explaining. I bet that's why the other mom was confused too, because of last year's schedule. Really appreciate the clarification.

My neighbor said there IS a third payment but only for kids who qualify for some special circumstance... something about reduced school days or remote learning situations. I'm not 100% sure tho, just sharing what I heard!

That information is actually referring to the School P-EBT program (for school-age children), not the Under 6 P-EBT program. The school program has different payment structures based on individual school situations like remote learning days. The Under 6 program is standardized with just two payments regardless of the child's specific circumstances, as long as the household receives CalFresh benefits.

UGH the whole P-EBT system is SO CONFUSING!!! I have 3 kids (ages 3, 7, and 10) and they ALL have different payment schedules. The older ones get payments connected to their schools but my youngest gets the under-6 benefits and I can NEVER keep track of when money is supposed to show up. The worst part is you can't get ANYONE on the phone when you have questions. I've spent HOURS trying to reach someone about why my 7-year-old's payment was less than my 10-year-old's even though they go to the SAME SCHOOL!!!!

I totally get your frustration with the phone system. Have you tried using Claimyr? It helped me finally get through to a real person about my P-EBT questions last month. I was stuck in the same loop of transfers and disconnects until I found it. Their system calls and navigates the phone tree for you, then calls you when they get a real person. Saved me hours of frustration. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works, and the website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Just to provide some official clarification: For the 2024-2025 benefit year, the P-EBT program for children under 6 consists of exactly two issuances: 1. The first payment covered September 2024 through December 2024 (issued in February 2025) 2. The second payment covered January 2025 through May 2025 (issued in April 2025) There is no scheduled third payment for the under-6 program this benefit year. The confusion often happens because: - Last year's program had three payments instead of two - The school-based P-EBT program has different payment structures - Some states have different implementation schedules If you received both payments on your P-EBT card, you've received the complete benefit for children under 6 for this cycle. Hope this helps clear things up!

This is super helpful, thank you! One quick follow-up question - is there any way to check the total amount we should have received? I want to make sure we got the right benefit amount for my daughter.

Yes! The standard benefit amount for children under 6 in California for 2024-2025 is $43.50 per eligible month. So your first payment should have been approximately $174 (4 months × $43.50) and your second payment should have been approximately $217.50 (5 months × $43.50). The exact amounts might vary slightly based on individual circumstances and when your household was determined eligible for CalFresh, but those are the standard calculations.

i think theres still a summer p-ebt payment coming later this year? at least thats what i heard from my sons school. not sure if it applies to under 6 kids too or just school age kids. anybody know?

You're right about Summer P-EBT, which is a separate program from the regular P-EBT benefits. Summer P-EBT 2025 hasn't been officially announced yet, but based on previous years, it would likely cover June-August 2025 and be issued around August/September. And yes, it typically includes both school-aged children AND children under 6 who are eligible for CalFresh, though the issuance dates and amounts may differ. We should get official announcement about it in the next month or so.

does anyone else's p-ebt card keep getting declined sometimes even when theres supposed to be money on it? happened to me twice this year already its so embarrassing in the checkout line

YES!! This happened to me too! Try calling the number on the back of the card to check your balance first before shopping. Sometimes the money isn't loaded exactly when they say it will be. Also some stores (like Target by me) always decline P-EBT for some reason even when I have a balance, but it works fine at grocery stores.

This happens to me too! Another tip - sometimes the card readers at stores don't recognize P-EBT cards right away. I've found that if it gets declined, asking the cashier to manually enter it as an EBT card (instead of swiping) usually works. Also, make sure you're only buying eligible food items - I got declined once because I accidentally had soap in my cart with my groceries. The cashier had to remove the non-food items and run it again.
