Anyone know if P-EBT is doing double deposits for school-age kids this month?

So I just checked my daughter's P-EBT card this morning and noticed she got $175 which seemed higher than usual. Then my neighbor mentioned something about them doing two deposits for school-age kids this month instead of spreading them out? Has anyone else heard about this? I know P-EBT is different from regular CalFresh but I'm trying to figure out if I should expect another deposit or if this is just a one-time increase. My daughter is in 3rd grade at a CEP school if that matters. The online portal doesn't show any explanation and I'm confused about what's happening with these benefits.

Yes, they actually ARE doing something different with P-EBT payments for the 2024-2025 school year. Instead of monthly smaller payments, they're doing fewer larger payments. The $175 you received is likely combining multiple months' benefits. This isn't technically "two deposits" but rather a consolidated payment schedule. It's still the same total amount for the year, just distributed differently. You can verify this by checking the BenefitsCal portal or calling the P-EBT hotline at 877-328-9677 (though good luck getting through).

Thank you! That makes sense. So I shouldn't be expecting another deposit this month then? I wish they would communicate these changes better. The P-EBT website hasn't been updated in forever and the last notification I got was months ago.

Right?? I feel like they never explain anything clearly. Did you get any notification at all or did the money just show up on the card?

This is actually a scheduled payment for the new benefit period. P-EBT for 2024-2025 is being distributed in larger lump sums rather than monthly payments. The $175 represents multiple months combined, which is why it seems higher than before. For CEP schools like your daughter's, all students qualify automatically. If you need verification, I'd recommend trying Claimyr.com - they can help you connect with a P-EBT specialist without the usual wait times. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. The P-EBT hotline is almost impossible to get through to otherwise.

I used that Claimyr thing last month when I was having trouble with my kids' P-EBT cards and it actually worked pretty well. Got through to someone in like 15 minutes when I had been trying for DAYS before that. They helped me figure out why my kids' benefits were delayed.

Omg I just checked my sons card and there's NOTHING on it!!! I thought everyone was supposed to get this?? Are they doing deposits in waves or something?? His school is definitely a free lunch school so I don't understand why he wouldn't get it! Now I'm worried!!

Don't panic yet! They are doing the deposits in waves based on different factors. Some counties are receiving benefits before others, and sometimes even within the same school, they stagger the releases. Give it another week before you start worrying. If nothing shows up by then, contact your school to verify they have your correct mailing address and that your child is properly enrolled in the free/reduced lunch program. P-EBT is separate from CalFresh, so even if you get regular CalFresh, you need to make sure the school has your correct info for P-EBT.

The payments are different this year. I got a letter from the county back in July explaining that instead of monthly small amounts, they're combining benefits into bigger payments but less frequently. That's why you got $175 instead of the usual smaller amount. The letter said something about administrative changes making this more efficient for them. Check your mail from a few months back - you might have gotten the notice and missed it. As for expecting another deposit, probably not this month. According to the schedule they sent, the next one should be in December or January.

I must have missed that letter! Thanks for explaining. I'll check my emails too since sometimes they send electronic notices. January seems like a long gap between payments though - that's a little concerning.

This is NOT two deposits. P-EBT has changed their distribution schedule for the 2024-2025 school year. They are now issuing larger payments 4 times per year instead of smaller monthly payments. The total annual benefit remains the same, approximately $1,050 per eligible child at CEP schools, but distributed differently. The exact payment schedule is: - September 2024: $175 (covering Aug-Oct) - December 2024: $262.50 (covering Nov-Jan) - March 2025: $262.50 (covering Feb-Apr) - June 2025: $350 (covering May-Jul plus summer supplement) Students must be enrolled in eligible schools and meet the participation requirements for each period. If your child changed schools, there might be a delay in benefit processing.

Thank you for the detailed breakdown! This is super helpful. I wish they had communicated this clearly to everyone. Do you know if there's anywhere this payment schedule is posted officially? I'd like to mark these dates on my calendar.

I thought P-EBT was done after the pandemic?? We haven't received anything on my kids cards for months and I assumed the program ended. Now I'm confused about whether we should be getting something or not. They're at a school where everyone gets free lunch.

P-EBT has been extended but with modifications. The program was originally pandemic-related, but it's now continuing as part of expanded nutrition assistance efforts. If your children attend a CEP school (Community Eligibility Provision) where everyone gets free lunch, they should qualify. I'd recommend checking if your P-EBT cards are still active and that your address is updated with the school. Sometimes benefits don't load if they have outdated contact information.

UPDATE: I called the P-EBT hotline (took forever to get through) and they confirmed what you all said. The $175 is a combined payment for the first quarter of the school year, and the next payment won't come until December. The representative said they sent notices about this change in July but many people didn't receive them due to a mailing error. Thanks everyone for your help!
