CalFresh benefits not showing future deposit this month - normal before verification appointment?

I've been receiving CalFresh for about 3 months now and something weird is happening. Usually when I call to check my EBT balance, the automated system tells me I have 1 or 2 future deposits coming up. But this month when I called, there's no mention of any upcoming deposits! I'm worried because my benefits might be stopping? My verification appointment isn't scheduled until April (about 3 weeks away) where I'll need to submit my latest paystubs. Is it normal for the system to not show upcoming deposits before these verification appointments? Has anyone else experienced this? I'm getting anxious because I really depend on these benefits for groceries at the end of the month. Any insight would be super helpful!

same thing happened to me last year right before my quarterly review. freaked me out but the payment still showed up on my regular deposit date. sometimes the phone system glitches

That's reassuring! When did your payment actually post compared to when you usually get it? Was it on the same day as usual?

This is fairly common with CalFresh benefits. The automated system usually shows pending deposits 7-10 days before they're scheduled, but sometimes there's a processing delay that prevents it from displaying future deposits. Since you're between quarterly reviews (and not at your SAR7 or annual recertification period), your benefits should continue automatically. Your April appointment is likely for your quarterly verification, which is separate from your normal monthly issuance schedule. As long as you haven't received any Notice of Action about discontinuance, your benefits should still deposit on your regular issuance date based on the last digit of your case number.

Thank you for explaining this! I haven't gotten any letters saying my benefits are stopping, so hopefully that's a good sign. My case number ends in 7, so I usually get deposits around the 7th of each month. I'll try to be patient and wait until then.

Yes, that's definitely a good sign. With the last digit being 7, your benefits should deposit on the 7th of the month. The system sometimes doesn't show pending deposits until 3-5 days before the actual deposit date. If you don't see anything by the 4th or 5th, then it might be worth contacting your county office.

Have you checked BenefitsCal online? Sometimes the phone system is less reliable than the website for showing upcoming deposits. Also make sure you haven't missed any paperwork they sent you! I once thought my benefits were randomly stopping but turned out I missed a time-sensitive form they mailed me and just didn't realize it.

I just checked BenefitsCal and logged into my account, but it doesn't show anything about future deposits either... just my past ones. I've been checking my mail carefully and haven't received anything besides the appointment notice for April. Should I be worried?

Hmm, that's strange. Double check your "Messages" section in BenefitsCal too - sometimes notices go there instead of coming in the mail. And check your spam folder if they contact you by email. But honestly if your appointment isn't until April, I think you're probably fine. The system is just being glitchy.

DID YOU REPORT ANY INCOME CHANGES RECENTLY??? They can cut you off with NO WARNING if you go over the income limit!!! Happened to me and I had to fight for WEEKS to get my benefits back even though it was their mistake!!! The system is designed to cut people off at the slightest issue!!!

No, I haven't had any income changes. I'm still at the same job with the same hours as when I applied. But now I'm worried! Can they really just cut benefits without sending any notice??

To clarify, they legally cannot discontinue your benefits without sending you a Notice of Action at least 10 days before the effective date. If your income hasn't changed and you haven't received a notice, your benefits should continue as normal.

have you tried calling your caseworker directly? sometimes calling that EBT number isn't helpful cuz its just automated. my worker helped me when i had a similar issue

I've tried calling the county office but I can never get through to an actual person. It's so frustrating! I've spent hours on hold only to get disconnected.

When I was having trouble reaching someone at the CalFresh office, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that held my place in line and called me back when a worker was available. Saved me hours of holding and getting disconnected. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. It was super helpful when I needed to sort out a similar issue with my benefits not showing up in the system.

This could actually be related to the quarterly reporting cycle. Even though your verification appointment isn't until April, the system sometimes puts benefits on hold if you're approaching the end of a quarter. Has it been exactly 3 months since you were approved? If so, the system may be waiting for your quarterly verification to process future payments. Most counties in California issue CalFresh benefits between the 1st and 10th of the month based on the last digit of your case number. If you don't see a benefit deposit by your usual date, that's when you should be concerned. But the automated system often doesn't show pending deposits until very close to the issuance date.

You're right - I was approved in January and this is my first quarterly review coming up. That might explain it! I'll wait until my usual deposit date (the 7th) before panicking. Thanks for explaining how the quarters work - the orientation didn't really cover this stuff.

my sister in law works for calfresh and she says they've been having problems with there computer systems this month. lots of people calling about the same issue

Actually guys I just realized that my SNAP office sent a letter saying my quarterly SAR7 report was due by the 5th of this month.... could that be the problem? That I missed turning it in? Now I'm really worried.

Wait, what?! I haven't received anything about an SAR7 yet. I thought the SAR7 was semi-annual, not quarterly? Now I'm confused and extra worried.

The previous commenter is mixing up programs or terminology. In California, CalFresh uses a Semi-Annual Reporting (SAR) system, which means the SAR7 form is due once every six months, not quarterly. What you likely have coming up is your Quarterly Report (QR) verification, which is different from the SAR7. You're correct that you haven't missed anything if you only received notice about your April appointment.

I work at a county eligibility office and can confirm what others have said - the automated phone system often doesn't display pending deposits until 3-5 days before issuance. Your benefits should continue automatically between quarterly reviews as long as you haven't received a Notice of Action about discontinuation. The fact that you only received an appointment notice (not a discontinuation notice) is actually a good sign. Your April verification is routine and shouldn't affect your monthly deposits. Keep checking around the 4th-5th if your case number ends in 7!

This is so helpful to hear from someone who actually works in the system! I've been stressing about this for days but your explanation makes total sense. I really appreciate you taking the time to reassure folks like me who are new to navigating all this. It's reassuring to know that not seeing pending deposits is actually normal and that my April appointment is just routine. I'll definitely keep an eye out around the 4th-5th for any updates. Thank you!

I've been on CalFresh for about 2 years now and this exact same thing has happened to me multiple times, especially around quarterly reviews. The phone system is honestly pretty unreliable for showing future deposits - sometimes it shows them, sometimes it doesn't. What I've learned is that as long as you haven't gotten any official notices about your benefits being discontinued, they usually deposit on schedule regardless of what the automated system says. Since you mentioned your case number ends in 7, definitely check your account on the 7th. In my experience, the benefits almost always show up even when the system acts weird like this. Try not to stress too much about it!
