Actually guys I just realized that my SNAP office sent a letter saying my quarterly SAR7 report was due by the 5th of this month.... could that be the problem? That I missed turning it in? Now I'm really worried.
Wait, what?! I haven't received anything about an SAR7 yet. I thought the SAR7 was semi-annual, not quarterly? Now I'm confused and extra worried.
The previous commenter is mixing up programs or terminology. In California, CalFresh uses a Semi-Annual Reporting (SAR) system, which means the SAR7 form is due once every six months, not quarterly. What you likely have coming up is your Quarterly Report (QR) verification, which is different from the SAR7. You're correct that you haven't missed anything if you only received notice about your April appointment.
update us when u get ur benefits! curious if they show up on time
Will do! I'll check back in after the 7th and let everyone know what happened. Thanks for all the support everyone!
Quick tip from someone who just went through this: Take a screenshot of your current balance before activating the new card! That way if there's any discrepancy you have proof of what was supposed to transfer. I did this and everything went smoothly, but better safe than sorry with something as important as food benefits.
That's a really smart idea! I'll definitely do that. Thanks for the suggestion!
the whole system is so frustrating why cant they just leave things alone my benefits got delayed last time they did a "system upgrade" and i couldnt feed my kids for 3 days
I'm sorry you had that experience. System upgrades can definitely cause temporary issues, but the 4.0 cards are being implemented to reduce fraud and protect everyone's benefits long-term. If you experience any delays this time, request expedited assistance and mention that you have children with no food. Counties are required to address emergency food needs within 24 hours.
the whole system is designed to make u miserable i swear. u have to be literally homeless before they help u sometimes and then they act surprised when theres so many homeless families
I want to emphasize that while applying for CalWORKs Homeless Assistance is your primary option, you should simultaneously explore all available resources: 1. Contact your local Housing Authority about emergency housing vouchers 2. Reach out to local non-profits like PATH, LA Family Housing, or St. Joseph Center 3. Call 211 for referrals to eviction prevention programs 4. If you're facing eviction (rather than just the end of your lease agreement), seek legal assistance immediately Moving forward with the CalWORKs application, be extremely persistent. Ask specifically for an emergency appointment due to imminent homelessness. Use the phrase "immediate need" as this can trigger expedited processing. Remember that the permanent housing assistance requires that your new housing costs not exceed 80% of your Total Monthly Household Income. This is challenging in LA's rental market, but it's a strict requirement.
Thank you for all these resources! I'll start making calls to these organizations tomorrow as well. The 80% income rule does sound really tough in this rental market, but hopefully we can find something that qualifies.
i had a baby last year and had to report the change and my benefits were late that month. ended up being deposited on the 15th instead of my usual 11th. just be prepared in case theres a delay
Congrats on your baby! Just FYI adding a household member usually increases your benefit amount. Did you get more after they processed the change?
My sister had to report a raise and they REDUCED her benefits by like $50!!! For just a tiny raise!!! The system is SO UNFAIR!!!
This is actually how CalFresh is designed to work. Benefits decrease as income increases, typically by about 30 cents for every additional dollar earned. So a $315 raise might reduce benefits by around $95. It's not meant to be unfair, just that the program provides more assistance to households with greater financial need.
One more thing to try: if you have your case number and client ID (should be on any notice you've received), you can try calling your specific eligibility worker if you have their direct extension. Sometimes the main lines are down but the direct lines still work. Also, many counties have implemented a callback system - when you call, instead of waiting on hold, you can request a callback when it's your turn in the queue.
not OP but my county supposedly has this callback thing but it NEVER works! i requested callback 3 times last week and never got called back once! such a broken system smh
UPDATE: Finally got through this morning! Called right at 8am like someone suggested and only waited about 30 minutes. The worker confirmed it was the utility allowance change that reduced my benefits. But she also found that they hadn't processed my most recent pay stubs showing my hours were cut back, so she's going to recalculate and I might actually get MORE benefits than before. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! For anyone else struggling to reach CalFresh, definitely try calling right when they open.
Great to hear you got it resolved! This is a good reminder for everyone to keep copies of all verification documents you submit and follow up if you see unexpected changes to your benefits. The system isn't perfect, but persistence usually pays off.
just called my county (Alameda) and they said June 12th-30th depending on your last name. The lady said they're sending text notifications when it's loaded this year if you have your phone number updated in BenefitsCal.
Thanks everyone for all this helpful info! I just updated my phone number in BenefitsCal hoping to get the text notification. Our last name starts with W so looks like we'll be in the later batch. At least now I can plan accordingly. Much appreciated!
One other thing to check - make sure they didn't accidentally count your sister's previous income from before she lost her job. I've seen cases where they mistakenly used old income information rather than the current unemployment. Also, did you report her as "mandatory" or "non-mandatory" when adding her? Everyone who lives together and purchases/prepares food together should be mandatory.
I'm pretty sure I listed her as mandatory since we definitely shop and cook together. But maybe they did use old income info... she was making a lot more at her previous job than she gets on unemployment. I'll specifically ask about that when I call tomorrow. Thanks for the tip!
hey did u ever get this resolved?? my friend just had her benefits drop after adding her mom to the case too so wondering what happened with yours
Yes! Finally got through yesterday. Turns out they had accidentally counted my sister's previous income FROM HER JOB along with her unemployment! So they had us at like $5,500 household income instead of $3,900. They fixed it and our benefits are going up to $780 next month, plus they're giving us back pay for this month's shortage. Tell your friend to check if they did something similar!
my sister had this happen n they told her it was cuz she shopped at walmart n there was alot of fraud there so they just cancelled everyones card who shopped there that week?!! so stupid
That's partially accurate. When law enforcement identifies a compromised card reader at a specific location, the system may flag all cards used there during the affected timeframe. It's an imperfect system, but it's actually prevented millions in fraud. The better approach would be notifying clients before cancellation, which they're working to implement.
whats the update? did u get ur new card yet or find a way to use ur benefits?
Thanks for checking! I ended up using that mobile payment option that someone mentioned above - was able to set it up through BenefitsCal and use my benefits at Safeway yesterday with just my phone! The new physical card should arrive next week according to the customer service rep I finally reached. The whole situation is still frustrating but at least I have access to my benefits now.

•That's a good point! If you recently reported increased expenses on your SAR7 (like higher rent, childcare costs, or medical expenses), your regular benefit amount could increase. This isn't a special supplement though - it's just a recalculation of your regular benefits based on your updated expenses. Always make sure to report any increases in your household expenses on your SAR7 or at recertification, as these can help qualify you for higher benefit amounts.

My sister in San Diego got the disaster supplement but she had to apply separately for it. They didn't just automatically add it to her regular benefits. She had to show she lost food due to power outages from the storm. Is that what you're talking about?

•Yes, that's exactly what's happening. Your sister applied for D-CalFresh (Disaster CalFresh), which is separate from regular CalFresh. To qualify, applicants need to: 1) live in an approved disaster area county, 2) have experienced a disaster-related expense or income loss, and 3) apply during the specific 7-day application period. It's not automatic - even if you already receive regular CalFresh benefits, you need to submit a separate D-CalFresh application. Additionally, there are different income limits for D-CalFresh compared to regular CalFresh, so some people who don't normally qualify for CalFresh might be eligible for D-CalFresh after a disaster.
