CalFresh EBT card suddenly showing 'lost/stolen' status but funds intact - skimming prevention?
So confused right now. Went to use my EBT card this morning at the grocery store and it got declined. The cashier said something about the card being reported as lost/stolen/damaged! I immediately checked BenefitsCal and my case shows active with all my balance still there (about $428). I never reported my card missing and I literally used it 3 days ago with no issues. Could this be some kind of automatic fraud protection because of all that EBT skimming that's been happening? Has anyone else had their card randomly get cancelled without requesting it? I still have the physical card in my wallet! How long will it take to get a new one? I was counting on using those benefits for this week's groceries...

This happened to me in February! It's definitely part of their new fraud prevention system. The county is proactively cancelling cards they suspect might be compromised based on where you've used them. Did you shop at any stores with those card readers that looked weird or loose? They're trying to prevent skimming before it happens. Unfortunately you'll need to request a replacement card - it takes 7-10 business days to arrive. You can call your county office to expedite it, but prepare for long wait times.

•OMG thank you for explaining! I did use my card at a new corner store last week that seemed a bit sketchy but they accepted EBT. I'm glad they're being proactive but I wish they would have notified me first before just cancelling it. Do I need to go through BenefitsCal to request the new card or call directly?

•I just checked and don't see any texts or emails from them. Nothing in my BenefitsCal inbox either. Maybe they're just being extra cautious with certain cards? Really frustrated they didn't at least try to contact me first.

•You can actually request an emergency replacement card at your local county office if you're in a genuine hardship situation. They can print a temporary card same-day with your benefits loaded. Bring ID and your case number. Many county offices keep limited hours for walk-ins though, so call ahead if possible.

I used to work for the county and can confirm this is part of their new fraud prevention measures implemented in 2025. The system uses an algorithm to detect potentially compromised cards based on unusual purchasing patterns or high-risk merchant locations. The unfortunate part is they don't always notify clients before cancellation - that's a system limitation they're still working on. Here are your options: 1. Request replacement through BenefitsCal (slowest) 2. Call EBT Customer Service at 1-877-328-9677 (faster) 3. Visit county office in person (fastest but time-consuming) If you need food immediately, ask about emergency replacement procedures when you call. Some counties can issue same-day temporary cards.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I'll try calling the EBT number first, but my county office is notorious for never answering phones. I can't afford to take a day off work to go in person either. This system seems so backwards - protect us from fraud but leave us without food access in the meantime?

If your trying to get through to someone at CalFresh by phone, good luck with that nightmare. I spent 4 hours on hold last week before getting disconnected. After that frustration, I found this service called Claimyr that got me connected to a real person at my county office in about 10 minutes. They basically wait on hold for you and call you when a real person picks up. Saved me so much time and stress! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Worth it when you're desperate to get your benefits sorted out quickly.

The CalFresh department is INTENTIONALLY cancelling cards without notice! It's their way of making it harder for people to access benefits. They know exactly what they're doing. I've had my card randomly cancelled TWICE this year with no explanation. Each time they claim it's for "security" but they never have proof of any actual fraud attempt. It's all about controlling poor people and making us jump through more hoops. The whole system is designed to frustrate us into giving up.

•While I understand your frustration, the card cancellations are actually in response to a massive increase in EBT skimming that cost California over $45 million in 2024 alone. The system isn't perfect, but they're trying to protect benefits. The lack of notification is a technical limitation they're working to address, not an intentional barrier.

Update on the EBT card situation: California is actually rolling out chip-enabled EBT cards starting next month to address the skimming issue permanently. In the meantime, here's a tip: you can transfer your EBT benefits to a mobile payment app now. Log into BenefitsCal, go to EBT Account Management, and select "Enable mobile payment options." This lets you use your benefits through a secure digital wallet while waiting for your replacement physical card. Not all stores accept it yet, but most major grocery chains do.

•That's amazing news! I didn't know about the mobile payment option. I just logged in and set it up - you're right, it shows my benefits are available through the app now. THANK YOU so much for this tip, seriously a lifesaver. And good to hear about the chip cards finally coming!

•That's partially accurate. When law enforcement identifies a compromised card reader at a specific location, the system may flag all cards used there during the affected timeframe. It's an imperfect system, but it's actually prevented millions in fraud. The better approach would be notifying clients before cancellation, which they're working to implement.

•Thanks for checking! I ended up using that mobile payment option that someone mentioned above - was able to set it up through BenefitsCal and use my benefits at Safeway yesterday with just my phone! The new physical card should arrive next week according to the customer service rep I finally reached. The whole situation is still frustrating but at least I have access to my benefits now.

This is really helpful info everyone! I'm a new CalFresh recipient and had no idea about the mobile payment option or that they were being so proactive about fraud prevention. Good to know what to expect if this happens to me. Quick question - when you set up the mobile payment through BenefitsCal, do you need to verify your identity again or does it just link to your existing case automatically? Also wondering if there are any fees for using the mobile option vs the physical card?

•Great questions! When I set up the mobile payment option, it linked automatically to my existing case - no additional identity verification needed since I was already logged into BenefitsCal. Just had to agree to some terms and conditions. As for fees, there are NO fees for using the mobile payment option, same as the physical card. Your benefits work exactly the same way, just through your phone instead of swiping a card. The only limitation I've noticed is that some smaller stores don't have the technology to accept mobile EBT payments yet, but all the major chains like Safeway, Walmart, Target etc. do. Definitely recommend setting it up as a backup even if you don't think you'll need it!

Just want to add that if anyone is still struggling with getting through to customer service, try calling the EBT hotline early in the morning (like 8am) or late afternoon after 4pm - those tend to be less busy times. Also, if you have to visit your county office in person, many locations now allow you to schedule appointments online which saves hours of waiting. Check your county's website for their online scheduling system. I learned this the hard way after waiting 3 hours at the office only to be told I could have made an appointment! The whole EBT fraud prevention thing is definitely a necessary evil given how bad the skimming has gotten, but they really need to work on their communication with clients.

•Thanks for the timing tips! I'm actually dealing with a similar situation right now where my card got flagged. I tried calling around 2pm yesterday and was on hold for over an hour before giving up. I'll definitely try calling first thing in the morning tomorrow. The online appointment scheduling is a game changer - I had no idea that was even an option! It's frustrating that they don't make these resources more visible when your card gets cancelled. Like you said, better communication would go a long way in making this process less stressful for people who are already dealing with food insecurity.

This thread has been so helpful! I'm relatively new to CalFresh and had no idea about any of these issues or solutions. A few months ago I would have panicked if my card suddenly stopped working, but now I know about the mobile payment option and the fraud prevention system. It's reassuring to know there are workarounds while waiting for replacement cards. One thing I'm curious about - does anyone know if the new chip-enabled cards will completely eliminate the skimming problem, or will scammers just find new ways around it? Also wondering if the mobile payment option will become the primary way to use benefits in the future, kind of like how everything else is going digital these days.

•Great questions! From what I've read, chip cards will significantly reduce skimming at card readers since they generate unique transaction codes each time, but scammers are always adapting their methods. The mobile payment option is definitely convenient and seems like the way things are heading - it's actually more secure than physical cards in many ways since it uses tokenization. I think we'll probably see a hybrid approach where both options remain available, especially since not everyone has smartphones or feels comfortable with digital payments. The important thing is having multiple ways to access our benefits so we're not stuck without food when issues arise like what happened to the original poster!
