Won my Washington ESD unemployment appeal - when do payments start?
Finally got good news! I won my unemployment appeal after being disqualified for 6 weeks. The hearing officer ruled in my favor last Thursday and said my separation was due to lack of work, not misconduct like my employer claimed. My question is - when should I expect to actually see the money? The decision letter doesn't give a clear timeline for when back payments get processed. Has anyone been through this process recently? I'm behind on rent and really need to know what to expect.

Congrats on winning! Usually takes about 7-10 business days after the appeal decision for Washington ESD to process the back payments. They have to update your claim status first, then calculate all the retroactive payments.

•That's a relief to hear! Do they pay everything in one lump sum or break it up?

•Should all come at once as back pay, then your regular weekly claims resume their normal schedule.

Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even during the appeal process! A lot of people stop filing and then have issues getting their back pay calculated correctly.

•I did keep filing every week, thank goodness. My case worker told me to do that at the beginning.

•Smart move. I've seen people lose weeks of benefits because they stopped filing during appeals.

Had this exact situation last year. Took about 2 weeks for me to see the money after winning my appeal. But I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD to check on the status. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Was way easier than calling myself and getting hung up on constantly.

•Never heard of that service before. Is it legit? I hate calling Washington ESD because I can never get through.

•Yeah it's real. They basically handle the calling part for you so you don't have to sit on hold for hours. Saved me a lot of frustration when I needed to check my appeal status.

•Interesting, might have to check that out. I've wasted so many hours trying to reach someone at Washington ESD.

The payment timeline can vary depending on how complex your case was. Since you had a misconduct disqualification that was overturned, they might need extra time to recalculate everything properly. I'd give it 2 full weeks before getting concerned.

•That makes sense. My case did drag on for almost 3 months so there's probably a lot to sort through.

•3 months?? That's insane. The whole appeal process is so slow.

•Hang in there! I know how frustrating the wait is. Make sure you have all your documentation ready.

•8 weeks is unfortunately pretty normal right now. The appeal backlog is huge because of staffing issues.

One thing to watch out for - make sure your direct deposit info is still current in your account. Sometimes during long appeals the banking info expires or gets flagged for security reasons.

Malik Jenkins
•Good point! I'll double check that tomorrow. Would hate to have a payment delayed because of outdated bank info.

•This happened to my neighbor. Payment got sent to her old closed account and took another week to straighten out.

The worst part about appeals is you're already financially stressed and then have to wait even longer for money you should have been getting all along. System is backwards.

•EXACTLY. Like we're already struggling and they make it even harder.

•Yeah it's been really tough. Had to borrow money from family just to survive during the appeal process.

Also worth noting - you should get interest on the back payments since it took so long to resolve. Not much but every little bit helps when you're catching up on bills.

Malik Jenkins
•Wait really? They pay interest? I had no idea!

Freya Andersen
•Yep, it's a small percentage but they're required to include it for delayed payments due to their error or processing delays.

Just curious - what kind of evidence did you use to win your appeal? I'm preparing for mine and trying to gather everything I can.

•I had emails showing the lack of work situation, witness statements from coworkers, and documentation of the company's financial problems. The key was proving it wasn't my fault.

•Thanks! That helps me know what direction to go with my documentation.

BTW if you need to call Washington ESD to check on your payment status, definitely consider that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. Saved me hours of frustration when I was in your exact situation.

•I'm definitely going to look into it. Spent way too much time on hold during this whole process already.

Winning an appeal is such a relief! I remember that feeling. Make sure you celebrate a little once that money hits your account - you earned it after all that stress.

•Thanks! I'm definitely planning a small celebration once I can pay my rent and catch up on bills.

Does anyone know if there's a way to track the payment processing status online? Or do you just have to wait and see?
0 coins
Astrid Bergström
•Your claim status should update in the online system, but it's not always real-time. Sometimes the payment processes before the status changes.

•I've been checking my account daily but haven't seen any changes yet. Guess I need to be more patient.

Make sure to keep copies of all your appeal documents! You never know when you might need them again, especially if there are any issues with the payment processing.

•Good advice. I've got everything scanned and saved in multiple places now.

•Smart thinking. Better to have it and not need it than the other way around.

So jealous you won your appeal! Still fighting mine and the employer keeps submitting more 'evidence' trying to make me look bad. The whole thing is exhausting.

Malik Jenkins
•Don't give up! My employer tried the same thing. Just stick to the facts and don't let them intimidate you.

•Document everything and respond to each piece of evidence they submit. The hearing officer will see through any attempts to fabricate issues.

How long was your actual hearing? Mine is scheduled for next week and I'm nervous about how long it will take.

Malik Jenkins
•Mine was about 45 minutes. Not too bad. Just be honest and stick to the facts. You'll do fine!

The payment processing time varies a lot depending on how backed up they are. I've seen some people get paid in 5 days, others wait 3 weeks. Really depends on timing and workload.

Malik Jenkins
•Ugh, I hope I'm in the 5 day category. Bills don't wait for Washington ESD to catch up on their workload.

•Nothing about this system is predictable or efficient. Just have to roll with it unfortunately.

Update on that Claimyr thing I mentioned - they also helped my brother-in-law recently when he needed to talk to someone about his adjudication taking forever. Really useful for getting past the phone system maze.

Don't forget to update your job search log if you haven't been doing it during the appeal! They might ask for it once payments resume, especially if you've been disqualified for a while.

Malik Jenkins
•Oh shoot, good reminder. I've done some searching but haven't been logging it properly. Better catch up on that.

Astrid Bergström
•Yeah, they can be picky about the job search requirements even after an appeal. Better to stay on top of it.

Congratulations again on winning! Hope your payment comes through quickly. Keep us posted - always helpful to hear real timelines from people who've been through it.

The fact that you kept filing weekly claims during the appeal was smart. I made that mistake on my first appeal years ago and it created a huge mess with the back pay calculation.

Malik Jenkins
•Yeah I almost didn't because it felt pointless, but my case worker insisted I keep doing it. Glad I listened!

Congrats on winning your appeal! I went through something similar last year and the wait for payment after winning was nerve-wracking. In my experience, it took about 10 business days for the back payments to show up. One tip - if you don't see movement in your account by day 14, definitely call to check status. Sometimes there are small administrative hiccups that need a gentle nudge to get resolved. The good news is once it processes, you should get everything you're owed in one lump sum. Fingers crossed it comes through quickly for you!
