Why didn't I get my Washington ESD unemployment payment today - missing weekly benefit
My unemployment payment didn't show up in my account today and I'm freaking out. I filed my weekly claim on Sunday like always and it went through fine, no errors or anything. Usually my payment hits my checking account by Tuesday but nothing today. My claim status still shows active on the Washington ESD website. Is there some kind of delay this week? I really need this money for rent that's due tomorrow.

same thing happened to me last week, turned out there was a processing delay because of the holiday weekend

•But there wasn't a holiday this week though? I'm so confused.

•oh you're right, maybe it's something else then. have you checked if there are any messages in your eServices account?

Check your payment history in eServices first. Sometimes payments get held up if there's an issue with your weekly claim that you didn't notice. Look for any alerts or notifications in your account. Also verify that your direct deposit information is still correct.

•I checked and there's nothing in my messages. Direct deposit info looks the same as always.

•What does your payment history show for this week? Does it show a payment issued or is it blank?

If you can't figure out what's going on, you might need to call Washington ESD directly. I know their phone lines are terrible but sometimes that's the only way to get answers about payment delays. I actually found this service called Claimyr at claimyr.com that helps you get through to ESD agents faster. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

•How does that work exactly? I've tried calling ESD so many times and always get disconnected.

•It basically calls for you and waits on hold, then connects you when an agent picks up. Saved me hours of frustration when my claim got stuck.

ugh the payment delays are THE WORST especially when you're counting on that money

•Exactly! I budgeted everything around getting paid today.

This happened to me a few months ago and it turned out my claim went into adjudication without any notification. Apparently someone at my old job contested my unemployment claim and ESD had to investigate. The whole process took 3 weeks before I got paid. You should definitely call to make sure that's not what happened.

Grace Patel
•Oh no, how would I know if that happened? My account doesn't show anything about adjudication.

•Sometimes it doesn't show up right away. That's why calling is your best bet to find out for sure.

•If it was in adjudication, your claim status would usually change from 'Active' to 'Under Review' or similar. But not always immediately.

Washington ESD's payment system is so unreliable. I swear they delay payments just to mess with people. There's probably nothing wrong with your claim, they're just slow as usual.

•that's not really helpful though, OP needs their money

•I'm just saying it's probably a system issue, not something they did wrong

Did you work any hours last week that you reported? Sometimes if you work even a few hours it can delay processing while they calculate your partial payment.

•No I didn't work at all last week. Still looking for a job.

Another thought - check if your bank account is still open and in good standing. I've seen cases where payments get returned to ESD if there's an issue on the bank side, but it takes a few days for ESD to notify you about the returned payment.

•Bank account is fine, I used my debit card this morning for coffee.

This is exactly why I hate depending on unemployment. You never know when they're going to screw up your payment for no reason.

•I really don't have a choice right now though

Try logging out of eServices completely and logging back in. Sometimes the payment information takes time to update and a fresh login can show more current data. Also double-check that you answered all the weekly claim questions correctly - any 'yes' answers can trigger a review.

•I answered all the questions the same way I always do. Let me try logging out and back in.

happened to my sister too last month, she had to wait like 5 days for some reason

•Did she ever find out why it was delayed?

•something about a computer glitch, they never really explained it

I'm telling you, calling is really your only option here. The online system doesn't always show what's actually happening with your claim. I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and it was actually worth it - got through to ESD in like 20 minutes instead of spending all day trying.

•I'm starting to think that might be my only choice. This is so stressful.

I work part time at a bank and I can tell you that ACH payments (like unemployment) sometimes get delayed for random technical reasons. It could literally just be a processing hiccup that resolves itself tomorrow. But if you don't see it by Thursday, definitely call ESD.

Grace Patel
•That's actually reassuring to hear from someone who works in banking. I'll wait until Thursday before panicking completely.

Isabella Russo
•Good advice about the Thursday deadline. ACH transactions do have standard processing windows.

Washington ESD is just terrible with communication. They'll delay your payment and not tell you why until you call and wait on hold for 3 hours. It's like they want to make the process as difficult as possible.

•true but complaining doesn't help OP get their money faster

Update us tomorrow if your payment comes through! Sometimes it's just a one-day delay and everything works out fine.

Grace Patel
•Definitely will update. Hoping it's just a weird glitch.

One more thing to check - make sure you don't have any outstanding issues from previous weeks that might have caught up to you. Sometimes ESD will hold current payments if they find a problem with an older claim, even if it seemed fine at the time.

Grace Patel
•How would I check for that? My payment history shows I've been getting paid normally for the past 2 months.

•Look in the 'Letters and Notices' section of your account. Any issues would show up there as official correspondence.

Final suggestion - if calling doesn't work out, you can also try the 'Ask ESD' feature on their website. It's not as fast as calling but sometimes they respond within 24-48 hours with specific account information that can explain payment delays.

•Good idea, I'll try that too if the phone doesn't work. Thanks for all the suggestions everyone.
