Who can file unemployment in Washington - need to know if I qualify

I've been working part-time at a retail store for about 8 months but my hours got cut down to almost nothing. My manager says they might have to let me go completely in the next few weeks. I've never filed for unemployment before and honestly don't know if I'm even eligible. What are the requirements to file for unemployment benefits in Washington? Do you have to work full-time to qualify? I'm really stressed about this whole situation and could use some guidance.

You can definitely file for unemployment in Washington even if you were working part-time! The main requirements are that you earned enough wages during your base period (usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters), you're able and available to work, and you're actively seeking work. You also need to be unemployed through no fault of your own. Since your hours were cut involuntarily, that should qualify.

That's such a relief to hear! I was worried the part-time thing would disqualify me completely. What's this base period thing though?

0 coins

The base period is how Washington ESD calculates if you earned enough to qualify. They look at your wages from specific quarters. You need to have earned at least $1,500 in your highest quarter AND total wages of at least 1.5 times your highest quarter amount.

Just to add to what was said - you also need to register for work with WorkSource and do job searches every week. The job search requirement is usually 3 jobs per week but can vary. And you have to file your weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits.

0 coins

3 jobs per week sounds like a lot but I guess that's manageable. Do they check up on these job searches?

0 coins

Yes, they can audit your job search activities so keep good records. Save job postings, applications, contact info, dates - everything.

I tried calling Washington ESD last month to ask about eligibility and could never get through. The phone lines are always busy and when I do get in the queue, I get disconnected after waiting forever. It's so frustrating trying to get basic information about filing a claim.

I had the same problem until I found Claimyr - it's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents. They handle the calling and waiting for you. Check out claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. I've wasted so much time trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

Wait, how does that work exactly? Do they just call for you?

0 coins

Yeah, they handle all the calling and waiting in the queue. When an agent is available, they connect you directly. Saves you from sitting on hold for hours or getting disconnected.

0 coins

MAKE SURE YOU FILE ASAP!! I waited too long thinking I'd find another job quickly and missed out on weeks of benefits. You can file your claim online at the Washington ESD website. Don't wait until you're completely unemployed - you can file even if you're still working reduced hours.

0 coins

Oh wow, I didn't know you could file while still working some hours. That changes everything!

0 coins

Yes! It's called partial unemployment. As long as you're working less than full-time and earning less than your weekly benefit amount, you might still qualify for some benefits.

0 coins

Other things that can make you eligible: if you quit for good cause (like unsafe working conditions, harassment, etc.), if you were fired for reasons other than misconduct, if you're laid off due to lack of work. Basically as long as it's not your fault you're unemployed.

0 coins

What counts as misconduct? I'm worried they might say I did something wrong even though I didn't.

0 coins

Misconduct usually means willful violations of company policy, insubordination, excessive absences without excuse, things like that. Poor performance or not being a good fit usually doesn't count as misconduct.

i filed unemployment when i got laid off from my restaurant job and it was pretty straightforward. you just need your social security number, employer info, and dates of employment. the hardest part is actually getting through to someone if you have questions.

0 coins

Good to know it's not too complicated. I have all that information ready.

0 coins

yeah just be prepared for the waiting game. took like 2 weeks for my claim to get approved and then another week for the first payment.

Don't forget you might be eligible for other programs too. If you're going to school or training, there might be different options. And if you have kids, there could be additional support available. The Washington ESD website has info about all the different programs.

0 coins

I've been thinking about going back to school actually. What kind of training programs are you talking about?

0 coins

There's WorkFirst, Worker Retraining Program, and some other vocational training programs that can help with school costs while you're getting benefits. Definitely worth looking into if you want to learn new skills.

One thing to watch out for - if you have any side gigs or freelance work, you need to report that income too. Even small amounts can affect your benefits. Better to be honest upfront than have problems later.

0 coins

I do some occasional babysitting for neighbors. Do I need to report that?

0 coins

Yes, any income should be reported. They'll reduce your benefits accordingly but it's better than getting an overpayment notice later.

0 coins

The system can be confusing but once you get through the initial setup it's not too bad. Just make sure you keep filing your weekly claims on time - if you miss a week you might lose that week's benefits permanently.

0 coins

When do you file the weekly claims? Is there a specific day?

0 coins

You can file starting Sunday for the previous week. Most people file on Sunday or Monday. Just don't wait until the last minute in case there are technical issues with the website.

I've been on unemployment twice and the second time was much easier because I knew what to expect. My advice is to read everything carefully and ask questions if you're not sure about something. The rules can be tricky but the staff are usually helpful if you can reach them.

0 coins

That's reassuring. I feel a lot better about this whole process now.

0 coins

Yeah, it's really not as scary as it seems at first. Just take it one step at a time and you'll be fine.

0 coins

Also worth mentioning - if your claim gets denied for any reason, you can appeal the decision. Don't just give up if you think the decision was wrong. You have rights as a claimant.

0 coins

How long do you have to appeal?

0 coins

Usually 30 days from the date of the determination. The appeal process can take a while but it's worth it if you believe you were wrongly denied.

0 coins

Just want to echo what others have said about calling Washington ESD. It's incredibly difficult to get through. I spent weeks trying to reach someone about my claim. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and got through the same day. Wish I had known about it sooner.

0 coins

I'm definitely going to look into that if I have issues. Thanks for the recommendation!

0 coins

No problem. It was honestly a lifesaver for me. The video demo they have shows exactly how it works.

0 coins

For what it's worth, I think more people qualify for unemployment than they realize. The system is designed to help people who are unemployed through no fault of their own. If you're unsure, it's worth applying and letting them make the determination.

0 coins

That's a good point. I guess the worst they can say is no, right?

0 coins

Exactly. And if they say no, you can ask for an explanation and potentially appeal if you disagree with their reasoning.

0 coins

Don't forget to keep track of your job search activities from day one. Even if you're not required to do them immediately, start documenting everything. It'll save you headaches later.

0 coins

Good tip. I'll start a spreadsheet or something to track everything.

0 coins

That's exactly what I did. Date, company name, position, how you applied, contact info. Makes the weekly claims much easier to fill out.

0 coins

The whole process was overwhelming at first but once I got into the routine it wasn't too bad. File your weekly claim, do your job searches, report any income. Just stay on top of it and you'll be fine.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice. I feel much more confident about filing now.

0 coins

You're welcome! This community is really helpful. Don't hesitate to ask if you have more questions down the road.

0 coins

One last thing - make sure you have a good phone number and email address on file. Washington ESD will contact you through those if they need additional information or if there are any issues with your claim.

0 coins

I'll double check my contact info when I file. Thanks for thinking of that!

0 coins

No problem. Communication is key with these claims. You don't want to miss important notifications.

0 coins

Just wanted to add my success story - I was in a similar situation last year with reduced hours at my job. Filed for partial unemployment and it really helped me get through that tough time. The system works if you follow the rules and stay on top of everything.

0 coins

That's so encouraging to hear! I'm feeling much better about my situation now.

0 coins

I'm glad this thread was helpful. The unknown is always scarier than the reality. You've got this!

0 coins

If you run into any problems or have questions after you file, don't hesitate to reach out for help. Whether it's here in the forum or through services like Claimyr to get through to Washington ESD directly. There are resources available to help you navigate the system.

0 coins

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help me understand this. You've all been incredibly helpful!

0 coins

That's what this community is for. We've all been in similar situations and know how confusing it can be. Good luck with your claim!
