Can I go on unemployment in Washington - not sure if I qualify
I've been working at a retail job for about 8 months but my hours got cut way back and I'm barely making ends meet. I heard you can get unemployment benefits but I'm not sure if I qualify since I'm still technically employed. Can I go on unemployment in Washington if I'm still working part-time? What are the requirements? I've never filed for UI before and don't know where to start.

Yes, you can potentially qualify for partial unemployment benefits in Washington if your hours were reduced through no fault of your own. You'd need to file a claim through the Washington ESD website and report your reduced earnings each week. The key is that your hours had to be cut by your employer - you can't just request fewer hours and then claim UI.

•Thanks! My manager said they had to cut everyone's hours due to slow business, so it wasn't my choice. Do I need to quit my job first or can I keep working the reduced hours?

•You can keep working the reduced hours. In fact, you should keep working if you can. Washington ESD encourages people to work when they can - they'll just reduce your weekly benefit amount based on what you earn.

To qualify for unemployment in Washington you need to have earned enough wages in your base period and be able and available for work. The base period is usually the first 4 of the last 5 completed calendar quarters. You also need to be actively looking for work.

•What's considered 'enough wages'? I've only been working for 8 months, will that be enough?

•For 2025, you need at least $5,265 in total wages during your base period, with at least $1,685 in your highest earning quarter. Since you've been working 8 months you might meet this if you were working full-time before the cut.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD to file your claim or ask questions, I'd recommend checking out Claimyr at claimyr.com. They helped me get connected to an actual person at the unemployment office when I couldn't get through on my own. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Is that like a paid service? I'm already struggling financially and can't afford to pay extra fees just to file for unemployment.

•It's worth checking out - they focus on helping you get through to the right person rather than charging a bunch of fees. When I was stuck in adjudication for weeks, it was the only way I could actually talk to someone at Washington ESD.

Make sure you understand the work search requirements too. You'll need to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of everything you do. This includes applying for jobs, networking, going to job fairs, etc.

•Do I still need to do job searches if I'm working part-time? That seems weird if I already have a job.

•Yes, you still need to do job searches even with part-time work. The idea is that you're looking for suitable full-time employment. You can look for jobs that would give you more hours or better pay.

•The job search thing is so annoying when you're already working. I had to apply to 3 jobs a week even though I was hoping my hours would pick back up at my current job.

Filing your initial claim is pretty straightforward on the Washington ESD website. Just make sure you have all your employment information ready - employer names, addresses, dates of employment, and reason for separation. For you it would be 'lack of work' since your hours were cut.

•Do I need to tell my employer I'm filing for unemployment? I don't want to make things awkward at work.

•You don't have to tell them, but Washington ESD will contact your employer anyway to verify the information you provided. Most employers expect this when they have to cut hours.

just wanted to say i went through the same thing last year when my restaurant job cut my hours. the partial unemployment really helped me get by until business picked up again. definitely file asap because there's usually a waiting period

•How long did it take for you to start getting payments? I'm worried about how I'll pay rent next month.

•took about 3 weeks for my first payment but that included the waiting week. if you file this week you should get paid by early next month assuming no issues with your claim

One thing to remember is that you'll need to report your work and earnings every week when you file your weekly claim. Be honest about what you earned - don't try to hide income because they'll find out anyway and it could disqualify you from benefits.

•What happens if you accidentally report the wrong amount? I'm terrible at math and always worried I'll mess up the weekly claims.

•Small mistakes usually aren't a big deal - you can often correct them on your next weekly claim. Just don't make it look like you're intentionally hiding income.

The Washington ESD phone lines are absolutely terrible. I spent literally HOURS trying to get through when I had questions about my claim. That Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier actually worked for me too - got connected to someone in like 10 minutes instead of waiting on hold all day.

•Did you have to pay a lot to use that service? I keep seeing mixed things about whether it costs money.

•Honestly it was worth it just to not waste entire days trying to get through. Way less frustrating than the regular phone number that just hangs up on you.

Make sure you're actually available for work when you file. If you have restrictions on when you can work (like only certain days or hours), that could affect your eligibility. Since you're still employed part-time, this might not be an issue for you.

•I can work any hours they give me, I just want more hours. Should I mention that when I file?

FireflyDreams
•Yes, definitely mention that you're available for full-time work and that the hour reduction was due to lack of work, not your preference.

I hate to be negative but the whole system is such a mess. It took me 6 weeks to get my first payment because they kept asking for more documentation. Make sure you have EVERYTHING ready before you file or you'll be stuck in adjudication hell.

•What kind of documentation did they ask for? I want to make sure I have everything ready.

•They wanted pay stubs, verification of my work search activities, and some form about my separation from work. It was a nightmare trying to get all that together while not getting paid.

•This is exactly why I ended up using Claimyr - when you're stuck in adjudication, being able to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD makes a huge difference in getting things resolved quickly.

Don't forget about the taxes! Unemployment benefits are taxable income, so you'll owe taxes on whatever you receive. You can choose to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments or pay them when you file your tax return.

•Ugh, I didn't think about taxes. Should I have them withhold taxes or just pay later?

•I'd recommend having them withhold taxes so you don't get hit with a big tax bill next year. You can change this setting anytime in your account.

If your hours get cut back to normal levels, make sure you report that change right away. You don't want to keep collecting unemployment if you're back to full-time hours - that would be considered an overpayment.

•Good point! I'm hoping my hours will pick back up after the holidays. I'll definitely report any changes.

•Yeah, overpayments are no joke. They'll make you pay back everything plus interest if you don't report changes in your work situation.

Just file online at esd.wa.gov as soon as possible. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits. Don't wait thinking your hours might get restored - you can always stop claiming if they do.

•Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. I'm going to file my claim this weekend.

•Good luck! It's not as scary as it seems once you get started. The hardest part is usually just getting through the initial application.

I went through a similar situation a few years ago when my retail hours got slashed. The partial unemployment benefits were a lifesaver during that tough period. One tip that really helped me - when you're doing your weekly claims, keep track of all your earnings in a simple spreadsheet or notebook. It makes reporting so much easier and you'll have records if they ever ask questions. Also, don't stress too much about the job search requirements - looking for positions with more hours at other retail stores totally counts toward your weekly activities. The whole process seems overwhelming at first but once you get into the routine of weekly claims it becomes pretty straightforward.
