Can part time employees file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD?
I've been working part-time at a retail store for about 8 months, usually getting around 25-30 hours per week. My manager just told me they're cutting my hours down to maybe 10-15 hours because of slow business. I'm wondering if I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD since I'm still technically employed but my hours got slashed? I've never filed for UI before and don't really understand how it works when you're still working part-time. Do I qualify for anything or do I have to be completely unemployed?

Yes you can definitely file! Washington ESD allows partial unemployment claims when your hours get reduced. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claim, and they'll calculate a partial benefit amount. The key thing is that your reduced hours have to be due to lack of work, not because you requested fewer hours.

•That's a relief! So I can file even though I'm still working some hours? How do I prove it's because of lack of work and not my choice?

•When you file your initial claim, there's a section where you explain the reason for unemployment. Just be honest that your employer reduced your hours due to business needs. Washington ESD might contact your employer to verify, but that's normal.

I'm in a similar situation! Been trying to call Washington ESD for weeks to ask about partial benefits but can never get through. The phone system is impossible.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? I found out about it last month when I was having the same problem getting through to Washington ESD. It's a service that helps you actually reach an agent - you can check it out at claimyr.com. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that explains how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm so frustrated with trying to call.

•Yeah it worked for me! I was able to get through and talk to someone about my partial claim situation. Way better than spending hours on hold.

Just want to add that you need to meet the monetary requirements too. Washington ESD looks at your earnings from the past year to see if you qualify. Since you've been working 8 months, you should be fine, but they calculate it based on your highest earning quarter.

•What if I only started working 8 months ago? Will that be enough earnings to qualify?

•Probably yes, but it depends on how much you were making. Washington ESD needs you to have earned at least $1,000 in your base period. With 25-30 hours a week for 8 months, you should easily meet that threshold.

Wait, so if I'm working part time can I still look for another job while collecting benefits? Or do I have to stay available for my current employer to give me more hours?

•You can absolutely look for other work! In fact, Washington ESD requires you to be actively searching for work even on partial unemployment. You still need to log your job search activities each week.

•That's good to know. I was worried I'd be stuck with these reduced hours forever if I filed for UI.

Be careful about how much you report earning each week though. If you earn too much, you won't get any benefit payment for that week. Washington ESD has a formula they use.

•How much is too much? Like what's the cutoff?

•It varies based on your benefit amount, but generally if you earn more than about 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount, you won't get anything that week. But you should still report all earnings honestly.

I filed for partial unemployment last year when my restaurant cut my hours. The process was pretty straightforward online, just took a while to get approved. Make sure you file your weekly claims every week even if you think you earned too much.

•How long did it take to get approved? I'm worried about the timing since I need the money soon.

•Mine took about 3 weeks, but that was during a busy time. Could be faster now. The important thing is to file as soon as possible since benefits don't start until you file your claim.

This whole system is so confusing! Why can't Washington ESD just have clear information about partial benefits on their website?

•The information is there, but it's buried in their handbook. Look for the section on 'partial unemployment' or 'working while claiming benefits.

•I tried reading that but it's like trying to understand legal documents. Wish they'd write it in plain English.

Don't forget you'll need to keep track of your work search activities too. Even on partial unemployment, Washington ESD requires you to look for work and keep a log.

•What counts as a work search activity? Just applying for jobs online?

•Applying for jobs, networking, attending job fairs, even some types of training. You need 3 activities per week usually. Check the WorkSourceWA website for approved activities.

My friend went through this exact situation and Washington ESD approved her partial claim. She said the hardest part was actually getting someone on the phone to ask questions, but once she filed online it went smoothly.

•That's why services like Claimyr are so helpful. I used them when I had questions about my claim and actually got to talk to a real person at Washington ESD. Saved me so much frustration.

•I'll have to remember that if I ever need to call them. The regular phone system is definitely broken.

Just file online at esd.wa.gov and be honest about everything. Washington ESD will figure out if you qualify and how much you can get. Don't overthink it.

•Thanks everyone! This has been really helpful. I'm going to file this weekend.

•Good luck! Remember to file your weekly claims every week even if you think you won't get paid. It keeps your claim active.

One more thing - make sure your employer knows you filed for partial unemployment. Sometimes they don't realize their employees can do this and might be able to give you a few more hours if they know you're struggling.

•That's a good point. I hadn't thought about talking to them about it directly.

The Washington ESD system for partial benefits actually works pretty well once you get it set up. I've been using it for a few months while my hours fluctuate and it helps bridge the gap.

•That gives me hope! I was worried it would be too complicated or not worth the hassle.

•It's definitely worth it if your hours got cut significantly. Every little bit helps with bills and expenses.

Washington ESD has gotten better about processing partial claims lately. Used to take forever but seems like they've streamlined things.

•Really? My cousin filed in December and it still took a month to get her first payment.

•Hmm, maybe it depends on the situation. Mine was pretty straightforward so that might be why it was faster.

Remember you have to report ALL income, not just from your main job. If you do any side gigs or freelance work, that counts too.

•I don't have any other income, just the one part-time job. But good to know for the future.

The partial unemployment thing saved me when my hours got cut at the hotel. Definitely file sooner rather than later since there's usually a waiting period.

•Thanks! I'm convinced now. Going to file this weekend for sure.

•Smart move. The sooner you file, the sooner you can start getting help with the reduced income.

One last tip - if you have any problems with your claim or questions come up, try that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier. It's way easier than trying to navigate the Washington ESD phone system on your own.

•I bookmarked their website just in case. Hopefully I won't need it but good to have as backup.
