Can part timers get unemployment in Washington ESD?

I've been working part-time at a retail store for about 8 months, usually getting around 25-30 hours per week. My manager just told me they're cutting my hours down to maybe 10 hours a week starting next month because of slow sales. I'm wondering if I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD since I'm technically still employed but barely getting any hours? I've never filed before and I'm not sure if part-time workers are eligible. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Yes, part-time workers can definitely qualify for unemployment in Washington! The key is that you need to have earned enough wages during your base period. Since you've been working 25-30 hours a week for 8 months, you should have enough work history. When your hours get cut significantly like that, it's called 'underemployment' and you can file a claim.

That's a relief! Do I need to wait until my hours actually get cut, or can I file as soon as I know it's happening?

0 coins

You should file as soon as your hours are reduced. Don't wait - the sooner you file, the sooner you can start receiving benefits.

0 coins

same thing happened to me last year. i was working part time at a restaurant and they cut my hours from 30 to like 8 hours a week. filed with washington esd and got approved pretty quick

0 coins

How much did you end up getting in benefits if you don't mind me asking?

0 coins

it was based on my previous wages so not a ton but it helped cover some bills. every little bit helps when your hours get slashed

The important thing to understand is that Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount based on your highest-earning quarter during your base period. Since you've been working consistently for 8 months, you should meet the monetary requirements. When you file, you'll need to report your reduced hours each week and any wages you earn from those 10 hours.

0 coins

So I would still need to keep working those 10 hours and report them? I won't lose my benefits?

0 coins

Correct. You can work part-time and still collect benefits as long as your earnings don't exceed your weekly benefit amount plus $5. Washington ESD will reduce your benefit payment by the amount you earn above $5.

I've been trying to get through to Washington ESD for weeks about a similar situation but can never reach anyone on the phone. The wait times are insane and I keep getting disconnected. Has anyone found a better way to contact them?

0 coins

I had the same problem until I found this service called Claimyr. They help you get through to Washington ESD agents without waiting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

0 coins

Never heard of that before. Does it actually work? I'm desperate at this point.

0 coins

Yeah it worked for me. Got connected to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of waiting hours. Worth trying when you need to talk to someone about your specific situation.

0 coins

WAIT hold up... I thought you had to be completely unemployed to get benefits??? This is news to me. I've been struggling with reduced hours for months and never knew I could apply!

0 coins

That's a common misconception! You can definitely get partial unemployment benefits when your hours are significantly reduced. File as soon as possible.

0 coins

OMG I feel so stupid for not knowing this. I've been barely scraping by when I could have been getting help this whole time.

Make sure you're available for full-time work when you file. Washington ESD requires that you be able and available for work, and actively seeking employment. Even though you're working part-time, you need to show you're looking for more hours or a better job.

0 coins

So I need to be job searching even while I'm still working my current part-time job?

0 coins

Yes, you'll need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log. You can look for full-time positions or additional part-time work.

0 coins

been there done that. filed when my hours got cut at the grocery store. took about 2 weeks to get approved and start getting payments. not gonna lie, the extra money made a huge difference

0 coins

Did you have any issues with the application process? I'm worried I'll mess something up.

0 coins

nah it was pretty straightforward. just be honest about your hours and wages. they'll figure out the rest

0 coins

One thing to keep in mind is that your employer might fight your claim. Some employers don't like it when part-time workers file for unemployment, even though it's perfectly legal. Don't let that discourage you from filing.

0 coins

Why would they fight it? I'm not quitting, they're just cutting my hours.

0 coins

Some employers wrongly think that part-time workers filing for benefits will increase their unemployment insurance costs. Most of the time Washington ESD sides with the worker in these situations.

0 coins

I work part time too and was wondering the same thing. My boss keeps threatening to cut everyone's hours because business is slow. Good to know I have options if it happens.

0 coins

Definitely keep this information in mind. It's better to know your rights before you need them.

The Washington ESD website has a lot of good information about partial unemployment benefits. There's a whole section explaining how it works for people who are still working but with reduced hours. I'd recommend reading through it before you file.

0 coins

I tried looking at their website but it's kind of confusing. Is there a specific page you'd recommend?

0 coins

Look for the section on 'Working Part-Time While Receiving Benefits' - it explains exactly how they calculate your payments when you're still earning some wages.

0 coins

Just want to add that you should file your weekly claims every week even if you work some hours. Don't skip weeks thinking you won't get anything - let Washington ESD calculate it for you.

0 coins

Good point. I would have probably skipped weeks where I worked thinking I wouldn't qualify.

This thread is so helpful! I'm in a similar boat - working part-time at a coffee shop and they just cut everyone's hours in half. I was freaking out about how I'm going to pay rent next month.

0 coins

File as soon as possible! Don't wait and stress about it. The worst thing that can happen is they say no, but based on what you're describing, you should qualify.

0 coins

Thank you! I'm going to file tonight. This thread gave me the confidence to actually do it.

0 coins

Quick tip - when you file your weekly claims, be super accurate about your hours and wages. Washington ESD will verify with your employer, so any discrepancies could cause delays or issues with your claim.

0 coins

Should I round up or down if my hours are like 9.5 or something?

0 coins

Report exactly what you worked. If you worked 9.5 hours, report 9.5 hours. Accuracy is key.

0 coins

The system is set up to help people in exactly your situation. Part-time workers whose hours get cut through no fault of their own absolutely deserve unemployment benefits. Don't feel guilty about filing - you've been paying into the system through your paychecks.

0 coins

I didn't even think about that - I have been paying into it! That makes me feel better about applying.

0 coins

heads up - when you file your first claim it might take a week or two to get processed. dont panic if you dont hear back right away. they're pretty backed up but they'll get to it

0 coins

Good to know. I was expecting it to be instant or something.

0 coins

I tried calling Washington ESD last month about part-time benefits and it was impossible to get through. Finally used that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier and got connected to an agent who explained everything perfectly. Definitely worth it if you need to talk to someone directly.

0 coins

How much does that service cost?

0 coins

I don't remember the exact cost but it was way worth it compared to wasting hours trying to call on my own. They got me connected in like 15 minutes.

0 coins

Make sure you understand the difference between 'able and available' vs 'suitable work' requirements. You need to be available for full-time work, but you can turn down jobs that pay significantly less than your previous wages or are in a completely different field.

0 coins

That's confusing. So I can be picky about jobs while collecting benefits?

0 coins

Not picky exactly, but you don't have to take just any job. There are specific rules about what constitutes 'suitable work' based on your previous experience and wages.

0 coins

I've been on partial unemployment for 3 months now and it's been a lifesaver. My restaurant job went from 35 hours to 15 hours a week and the UI benefits help bridge the gap while I look for something better.

0 coins

That's exactly what I'm hoping for. Just something to help cover the difference until I can find more hours or a better job.

0 coins

It definitely helps. Just stay on top of your weekly claims and job search requirements and you should be fine.

0 coins

Another thing - if your employer tries to schedule you for additional hours after you file, you should generally accept them. Turning down available hours from your current employer could affect your benefits.

0 coins

What if they offer me like 2 more hours at a terrible time slot? Do I have to take it?

0 coins

Generally yes, unless there's a really good reason like it conflicts with another job or you don't have transportation. Washington ESD expects you to be flexible with your current employer.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The hardest part is just getting started. Once you file and get into the routine of weekly claims, it becomes pretty routine. And don't hesitate to ask questions if you get confused about anything.

0 coins

Thank you so much! This thread has been incredibly helpful. I feel much more confident about filing now.
