Can a part time worker collect unemployment benefits from Washington ESD?

I've been working part-time at a retail store for about 8 months, usually getting around 25-30 hours per week. My manager just told me they're cutting my hours down to maybe 10 hours a week due to slow business. I'm wondering if I can file for unemployment benefits with Washington ESD since I'm still technically employed but barely getting any hours? I've never filed for UI before and don't know if part-time workers are even eligible. Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Yes, you can definitely file for unemployment as a part-time worker! Washington ESD allows what's called 'partial unemployment' benefits. Since your hours got reduced significantly, you should qualify. You'll need to report your weekly earnings when you file your weekly claims, and they'll calculate a partial benefit amount.

That's good to know! Do I need to have worked a certain number of hours total to qualify?

You need to meet the base period requirements - basically having enough wages in the past year. With 8 months of 25-30 hours weekly, you should be fine.

I was in almost the exact same situation last year. Filed for partial UI when my restaurant cut me from 35 hours to 12 hours. Washington ESD approved my claim pretty quickly. The key thing is you have to be available for full-time work and actively job searching even though you're still working part-time.

How much did you end up getting in benefits? I'm trying to figure out if it's worth the hassle.

It was around $180 per week after they deducted my part-time earnings. Definitely helped me get by until I found a better job.

Just a heads up - when I tried calling Washington ESD to ask about partial benefits, I spent literally 3 hours on hold and never got through. Their phone system is completely overwhelmed. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual agent. They have this video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Got through in like 20 minutes and the agent explained everything perfectly.

Never heard of Claimyr before but anything beats sitting on hold forever. Did it actually work for you?

Yeah it worked great. The agent confirmed I could file for partial benefits and walked me through the whole process. Worth every penny to not waste my whole day on hold.

wait so if im working part time i can still get unemployment?? i thought you had to be completely unemployed to qualify

Nope! Partial unemployment is a thing. As long as your hours or wages got reduced through no fault of your own, you can usually qualify for some benefits.

Be careful though - you still have to meet all the job search requirements even for partial UI. That means 3 job contacts per week and registering with WorkSource. Don't skip that part or they'll deny your benefits.

Thanks for the warning! I'll make sure to do the job search stuff properly.

The job search requirement is such a pain when you're already working part-time. Like I'm trying to find more hours or a better job anyway!

I tried filing for partial benefits last year and Washington ESD kept asking for more verification documents. Took like 6 weeks to get approved because they wanted proof of my reduced hours. Make sure you have everything documented from your employer.

What kind of documentation did they want exactly?

They wanted my old schedules showing my previous hours and a letter from my manager explaining why my hours were reduced. Was a hassle but eventually got it sorted out.

Just file online at esd.wa.gov and answer all the questions honestly about your part-time work. The system will calculate your benefits automatically. Don't overthink it - worst case they deny you and you appeal.

Good point, I'll just apply and see what happens. Better than not trying at all.

One thing to remember is that you can only earn up to a certain amount per week before it affects your benefits. I think it's like 1.5 times your weekly benefit amount before they start reducing what you get. Someone correct me if I'm wrong on the exact number.

It's actually your weekly benefit amount plus $5. So if your weekly benefit is $200, you can earn up to $205 before they start deducting dollar for dollar.

Thanks for the correction! I always get confused by those calculations.

Filing for partial UI saved my butt when COVID hit and my hours got slashed. The extra money made the difference between paying rent and not. Definitely apply ASAP because there's usually a waiting period before benefits start.

How long was your waiting period? I need to plan my budget accordingly.

About 2-3 weeks from when I filed to when I got my first payment. But that was during peak COVID so might be faster now.

honestly the washington esd website is pretty confusing for partial benefits. i kept getting different information every time i called. finally used that claimyr service someone mentioned and the agent explained it way better than the website does

I've heard good things about Claimyr from other people too. Might be worth it just to get clear answers instead of guessing.

Make sure you report your work hours accurately on your weekly claims! I accidentally put the wrong hours one week and it caused a huge mess with my benefits. They flagged it as fraud and I had to go through this whole appeals process.

0 coins

Yikes, that sounds scary. How did you fix it?

Had to file an appeal and provide pay stubs to prove it was an honest mistake. Took 2 months to resolve but they eventually reinstated my benefits.

Quick question - do you have to be available for full-time work to get partial benefits? I can only work certain days due to childcare issues.

Zoe Stavros

•

You need to be available for 'suitable work' which doesn't necessarily mean full-time. If you have valid childcare restrictions, that should be fine as long as you're still actively looking for work within your availability.

The whole partial unemployment thing is actually pretty generous compared to other states. I moved here from Arizona and they barely had any support for reduced hours workers. Washington ESD does a decent job with it once you figure out the system.

That's reassuring to hear! I was worried I wouldn't qualify for anything since I'm still technically employed.

Pro tip: when you file your weekly claims, they'll ask if you worked and how much you earned. Always round up to the nearest dollar on earnings - better to overreport slightly than underreport and get in trouble later.

Good advice! I definitely don't want any issues with my claim.

I used Claimyr too when I couldn't get through to Washington ESD about my partial benefits. The agent told me something I didn't know - you can actually keep collecting partial benefits for up to a year as long as you're still actively looking for full-time work. Really helpful service.

A whole year? That's way longer than I expected. Definitely going to look into Claimyr since everyone seems to have good experiences with it.

Just wanted to add that you should file your claim as soon as possible after your hours get reduced. Benefits can't be backdated, so every week you wait is money you're losing out on.

Thanks everyone for all the helpful advice! I'm going to file my claim this weekend and see what happens. Really appreciate this community!
